Personal Narrative: Phyllis Dupuy's Life
At times when I grow bored about living in Louisiana, the state’s remarkable culture, food, and geography soothes my adventurous desires to relocate. While a lack of activities to engage in is frequent when living in “the bowl,” going on a boat ride on a beautiful day eliminates my state of idleness. One might infer that water is just water if he sees it all the time because it is always there. When I visualize water, I think of my late grandmother who loved Louisiana’s bodies of water. My deceased grandmother, Phyllis Dupuy, lived in Louisiana all of her life. She loved to cook, eat, and drink as the traditional “New Orleanian” does today. In addition to her three passions, she also found love in smoking cigarettes. My grandma smoked until she developed terminal cancers that led to her demise 3 years ago. After her series of chemotherapy treatments failed at M.D. Anderson in Texas, she decided to return to Louisiana- her home. My maw maw passed away approximately two weeks after her arrival home. A memorial service was held because she had decided to be cremated. In addition to her cremation, her dying wish was to have her ashes released over Delacroix Lake- a lake where her father took her fishing as a child. Her desire was fulfilled. As the wind carried my maw maw’s remains away, it took fragments …show more content…
Upon boarding the boat, I viewed water as if it were not just water. I found solace in the water, for it is where my grandmother resides. The atmosphere and its cool breeze reassured my soul that all was well. The song, “You Are My Sunshine,” implies, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away.” My maw maw used to sing that song to me at bedtime and at times when I was consumed in melancholy. While I lament that I cannot be her sunshine anymore, Nature has allowed her to be

My maternal grandmother Shirley Rae Harrington grew up during World War Two. But despite the war, she lived a somewhat normal childhood. When she was young there were very few other children in the area to play with and her younger sister, Sissy, was paralyzed. So she often played by herself in a stream nearby. Her family also owned several horses, chickens, pigs and a billy goat. Surprisingly she didn't get into much trouble as a child, except once when her family was down in our properties Maryland. People were racing speedboats in the creek, so she asked a neighbor who her family knew if she could go. He said yes and took her in his own boat when they got back her parents were fine but Mimi was upset with her. Her first travel experience…

In this essay from excerpts from “The Water and Culture Reader”, Alexis Harte talks about the history of the San Antonio River walk. It is also known as Paseo del Río which is a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River. Today, the River Walk is an enormously successful special-case pedestrian street, one level down from the automobile street. The River Walk loops under bridges as two parallel sidewalks lined with restaurants and shops, connecting the major tourist draws from the Alamo to River center Mall, to the Arneson River Theatre, to Marriage Island, to La Villita, to HemisFair Park, to the Tower Life Building, to the San Antonio Museum of Art, a “Flood Of Memories”nd the Pearl Brewery. During the annual springtime Fiesta, the River Parade features flowery floats that float down the river.…

“Young sister going swimming” By M. Atwood is an extra-ordinary poem talking about the younger sister experiencing the lake that they came upon to. The lake symbolizes desolation meaning no one ever comes to it and is surrounded with the speciality of nature. The use of nature of this poem intertwines with the attitude and the atmosphere that apparent the feeling within the author and her younger sister. Nature also acts like a healing or a getaway resort for the both of them, expressing the outcome of “enjoying their free time”. Their attitude demolishes their social views and leave behind civilization. The atmosphere is a secluded, speech-free environment that tranquil their inner depth of freedom and peace, “Beside this lake, where there are no people”. The surroundings of the “trees, rocks, and the circling bays and hills” subdues the higher standards of loneliness and the intake of isolation. As the poem progresses, the author zooms into the sisters physical manner. “Against the boards, her feet make sad statements, she thinks no one can hear” says that she is thinking of something in particular. The use of syntax develops in the brackets as shown to shift the different information from the author to the younger sister. The author brings in paradox when she talks about the sister continuing “her short desolate parade to the end of the dock”. The dénouement clinches with the beginning of the sixth stanza when the author marks her page to go into the rippled water with her…

Passage 1 uses visual imagery to describe elaborately the positive nature at the Okefenokee Swamp. The “primitive swamp” is located in “southeastern Georgia and northern Florida” and is a “shallow saucer-shaped.” Passage 1 also dramatically uses adjectives to inform about the unique qualities you can find present at the swamp, “exotic flowers such as floating hearts, and rare orchids” located in the “open water”. Passage 1 informs persuasive material to try to attract tourists to visit but as the passage has sucked the audience in it gives almost a subliminal message about the alligators being present so the visitors will know but ignore it because of all the other positive attracts at the Swamp.…

Some people enjoy the beach, others enjoy the mountains, but my favorite place is Branson, Missouri. Imagine peering down from the dock into a body of water in which you can see every little detail as it descends toward the bottom. You look up and see the cascading Ozark Mountains as if they were part of the border of Mona Lisa’s frame. A hush and peace unlike any other overwhelms you. You can hear the calming sounds of nature as an underlying harmony to that peace. The birds croon soft tones as the water flows softly past the dock. As the morning begins, a cool breeze floats off of Table Rock Lake giving the sensation of Fall no matter what time of the year it may be. Your stomach begins to growl as the smell of fresh baked…

Brian Stewart’s oil painting, “Home on the Mississippi”, is an exceptional piece of artwork from the culture it unfolds to the characteristic composition of how it was made. “Home on the Mississippi” is beautifully painted with oil onto canvas, colors exuberating realistic features and setting the mood. The painting portrays the reality of America in the late 1800’s. Picking a piece of artwork that I appreciate was easy for me. I turned my attention directly to the old American painting hanging in my Great Grandmothers hallway; “Home on the Mississippi” because of its realistic features, composition, and the most important part; the story it makes known.…

As I slowly wake up to the natural alarm clock of cotton trees softly rustling and the waves urging me to come for a morning swim, I realize life can't get much better than this. I roll out of bed in no hurry, though. The smoky, sulfur smell on my clothes reminds me of the late night of storytelling and laughter. I can't decide if I am really hungry enough to eat breakfast or if I want to test the water out by taking the first ride of the day on a jet ski. As I step out of the camper, my eyes have to adjust to the gleam of the water. It looks like it is going to be a good day. Lake Mcconaughy is full of days like this one. Not only is it an amazing vacation spot, but it is home away from home.…

The sun warmed the young girl’s face and shoulders; grass tickled her bare feet as she wandered through the sprawling cemetery. A woman dressed in a fashionable grey suit knelt next to one of the tall graves, tears streaming down her face. The girl approached the woman cautiously; the way one would a frightened doe in the woods. The air smelled like it did when her mother left a batch of cookies in the oven for too long, like burnt sugar. The woman turned towards the girl, her face contorted with grief. “Aunt Lila!” the little girl gasped, “what’s wrong? Are you all right? What are you doing here?” she spewed out a plethora of questions. Lila turned towards her niece, her tears had subsided.…

One of the most motivational people I have ever been blessed to have in my life would be Sandra Price, also known as Sandy. When I was in first grade, I remember walking into my Sunday-school class and noticing that there was a new volunteer. At the time I was a very chatty seven year old, who would usually be timed when talking in class because I apparently spoke “too much.” Sandy was an older woman in her early forties who had just began volunteering in the children’s ministry. The class went on, and we eventually split into small-groups to discuss the topic of fear and how to overcome it. Sandy had been asking the rather shy girls what scared them. No one had shared one of their fears, so I volunteered myself first. “While watching my ghost show last night, there was a story about one of the…

At Fuller Lake, the water is clear enough to see the bottom. At the bottom of the lake, I see stumps of what used to be trees, and lots of fish. Every now and then, I will see a snake swim by. I look up, and across the lake, I see many trees and big rocks that surround the lake. I hear the faint splash of water against the shore. Off in the distance, I can hear fish jumping, as if to say, feed me. Birds are singing from the trees, and crickets chirping. Here at the lake the dirt is what we call, “red dirt” and the air is fresh with a scent of pine. At the lake I can really take the time to feel the sun on my face and appreciate the warmth it brings.…

My Grandpa, beloved and cherished, has just passed. Balling her eyes out, Mom falls to the floor as if she was stabbed in the stomach, but she hadn’t been stabbed or injured in any way, instead she had to hear the news. I help her up and hold her tight, almost to the point of suffocation. Overwhelmed with emotion, I left her and headed to my room. The house feels different now, it doesn’t look the way it once had. The white walls that are supposed to reflect light, didn’t anymore. I lay in bed and release a sigh of relief, knowing I was safe and away from all the death that filled this house, only, death is inescapable, it follows you. At that moment I see him as I look out my window and witness the first snowfall. “He loved snow.” I thought. The snow gently lands and disintegrates into nothingness on my windowsill.…

Through the years, you’ve been crucial in my existence, thinking what would happen to me if you weren’t there providing my needs? I still remember the days where I play in the green plains, as fresh air rushing to my face as I ran, playing under the warmth of the sun and the sound of fresh flowing water of the river nearby. Your beautiful scenery that I didn’t value before, all of it were now gone. Forests that was full of trees and living creatures and islands were surrounded by blue seas, fertile mangroves and enchanting coral reefs. Those coral reefs were a world of color and beauty with fish of every shape and hue darting in and out around the delicate coral reefs, and now, what was left of it?…
