Personal Narrative: Offending Beautification Debrief
Squadron Beautification Debrief
What happened? In one week we managed to recruit seventeen potential volunteers to participate in the beautification effort on Saturday 21. We also managed to acquire all of the necessary equipment to clean our squadron thanks to the help of SSgt Owens. MSgt Barnhill assisted in giving further clarification of expectations; as well as his formal permission to send an email out advertising the volunteer opportunity squadron wide. MSgt Terry and several others provided critical feedback and edit suggestions to the email; suggestions that were promptly adopted. In addition to the email, we were able to get the word out about the event due to its announcement at roll call and by word of mouth. I came in during my lunch and after my QTP class was done for the day to create a roster, respond to emails, and to discuss with members of leadership the intentions and goals that I had for the event.

On the day of the event I arrived one hour early with my wife at 0900 to prepare the equipment and to update the roster for last minute changes. We were able to get everything prepared except the pressure washer; which would not function that day. 1000 came and everyone except

Most of those who claimed they would show up did and all put in great work and demonstrated excellent work ethic. We were able to procure all of the needed materials and most of the equipment to perform the event. We had a 70%attendance ratio.

The squadron now looks better than when we started. The effort was an overall success. The food was tasty. And the barbecue went off without a hitch for an hour and a half.

What went wrong?
Right off the bat we discovered that the pressure washer would not function or start; so we were not able to clean any facility surfaces.

We had a 30% no show rate from our potential volunteers.

Not everything was accomplished.

Why?
The pressure washer wouldn't start either because of lack of maintenance or user

Dealing with the event itself is one thing, but dealing with the people of the event is another. It is important to look into where the attendees will park, the cost of the parking, and how to deal with the entrance and exit traffic. The pharmaceutical company will have to get together with a parking company. When the guests arrive, the flow of them entering the event will be an issue as well, so it will be important for someone to control the flow of arrival.…

I was chosen to serve as the Volunteer Manager for the WashU Marrow Registry(WUMR). I attended weekly meetings in order to organize drives around campus, where we educated the public about the National Bone Marrow Registry, and also helped to register those who were interesting in joining the database. Since I was the Volunteer Manager, I created online google sheets that I would email out to our volunteer list, in addition to groups such as APO (service fraternity). I would also email the volunteers the day of the event as a reminder. At the events, I would help to train the volunteers, which included educating them on the…

Volunteers were told the overview of the event prior to signing up, and a timeline was given to each as well. I am unaware of the budget for the event, but knowing it was a fundraiser I am sure this was a top priority to the event planners. The Civic Center seemed to be the perfect location for the event. There was plenty of room inside for all of the entertainment and attractions, as well as plenty of parking outside to accommodate everyone. There were quite enough staffing and volunteers for the event, and I think having everyone work in shifts was a wonderful idea. We did not receive an agenda, but as far as I could tell everything seemed I am not sure all of the vendors involved in the event either. As for the food and beverage, this was the main focus of the event. People specifically bought tickets to eat pancakes. I am unaware as to how much was spent on food, but volunteers prepared and served the food so a catering team was not needed. There were no transportation needs for the event. There was a registration open to sell tickets and to check-in volunteers at the event. Due to the fact that there were so many volunteers, we did not have nametags. I do not believe that there were any outside sponsors of the event. There was a band playing on stage for entertainment, as well as a clown, a lion mascot walking around, face painting, raffle tickets, and other activities for people to enjoy. I personally did not see any…

It was then I had a sudden, shocking realization. Everyone who came, all thirty-five people, were here because of me and my vision to help the community. This project was born because of my idea of helping restore the church property and, hopefully, improve the relationship between the troop and the church. But, this was all mine and I took the helm and guided it through the murky, rough seas to get it to this point. I learned I could be a leader and both adults and my peers respected me, saw my dedication and determination, and followed my lead. This realization brought a smile to my tired, dirty face, and gave me a boost of energy to help me finish off the…

During my junior year the biggest event I had to plan was the social event for the battalion: military ball. The event was one eagerly looked forward to, and rightfully so, as it was always a blast with the cadets and fostered many memories that will last a lifetime. I took planning this event very seriously and in the end many told me that it was the best military ball to date. Several cadets came to me after the formalities had concluded and thanked me for putting in the time and effort to make military ball happen. Seeing their gratitude and smiles on their faces made me feel appreciated and I knew that all the hours I had put in and almost wanting to tear my hair out in frustration had not gone in vain. During my senior year, another crucial event within the program changed. The criteria for our annual inspection had been altered drastically and we had to start from scratch will almost everything. This inspection is what JROTC works toward the entire school year, due to the fact that if a program receives a low score a certain amount of times, then the program can be disbanded. I, along with my staff, worked for months making sure that we had everything we needed and that our presentation was the best it could be. When the day of inspection finally came around, our hard work paid off. The battalion received a perfect score and was officially the best JROTC program in the county. This was the first time since my high school JROTC program’s conception in 2000 that we had received a perfect score on the…

The next event I looked at was creative problem solving. Personally, I am not the best at critical thinking skills or problem solving skills, but if I actually attempted it I m sure I could. This even allows you to have 1-3 people. This event also has many different rounds. Round one requires you to take a test, and then if you pass the test or test high you move onto the second round. The second round is where you are given a problem to solve in thirty minutes. When you are all done solving your problem you have ten minutes to present your solution. Considering I am not a good test taker I think I’m going pass up this event.…
