Personal Narrative: My Sonder
Sonder is one of the greatest realizations a person can have. The idea of sonder is that every person has an equally complex life as you do. All lives have complexities not fathomable to other people, a rabbit hole of insecurities, strengths, and weaknesses. I never understood sonder until I became a barber. After many years in my craft, I began to like my client’s stories, which coming from all walks of life. They always have a new perspective on life than my own. While many people collect stamps or coins, I collected these stories. In particular, I remember this young chap who was just like you, waiting for me to finish his haircut. He was a WWII veteran. I believe he was part of the Jewish Brigade. Have you heard of the Spring Offensive of 1945 in Italy?
“No, did you happen to get his name?” you inquire. No, it’s a shame, I feel like I knew him better than most. Yet I never asked for his name. I remember that day clearly, though. He walked in with an army uniform, and strong stature. Resting his black shiny military boots on the ottoman, his feet facing the door. He was a

You are an abandoner and a friend, a coward and a stalwart. The ruling of a person can not be judged on a single action but many. That is, why you are both.” I responded to him. As these words left my mouth I began to pull off the cutters gown. He stood before me, he nodded and proceeded to the door. As he opened the door to leave he smiled accepting my reply and leaving. I never saw that man again. That my good sir is when I learned that the opposite of strength is not weakness, but indifference. The indifference of who rules over you, what ideology you follow, who you believe in. Caring and strength are staying to your convictions. Weakness is a transition to indifference. Growing up, I noticed a lot of discussion about financial problems between my parents. It’s not that we were becoming poor, it was because of our growing family needing more supplies. My mother just gave birth to my little brother when I started noticing the financial issues my family were facing. As a little girl, I do not know how our finances worked all I knew was many bills were due and I knew it because when I was a little girl I liked to practice reading and those bill statements were the papers that attracted my interest due to its colorful paper.…

Personal background starts off small, it changes and grows over time into something big, it grows into an identity. Walking down the hallway at school, seeing someone standing alone, my first instinct is to make conversation, compliment, or even just smile at him or her. This instinct came from someone once telling me an act so small could turn a person's entire life around. As a kid, reading encyclopedias about random topics, consumed my time. Many days were spent coming home to find an injured wild animal in my dad's arms waiting to be saved. My dad would sit outside and draw animals, trees, and anything else he saw. Nothing excited me more than trying to draw whatever my dad drew, and as good as he did. Any assignment that was handed to…

It sits on the whitish nightstand, a gentle reminder on a hectic day of bustling and forced dialogue to relax and reminisce. Wrapped in its faded wooden cerulean frame, the snapshot transports me to another place. While the actual photograph is slightly sun-bleached, the memory stands clear and vibrant in my mind. My Abuelitos and I are sitting in a row on the shore. Our chairs are bright cherry red. I’m wearing my favorite aquamarine Little Mermaid two-piece, the one with the sparkly flounder on the side. My strong, hardworking Abuelo sports his usual slicked back hairstyle and striped collared shirt that always seemed to complement his olive toned skin. My Abuelita garbs a crisp linen shirt…

While they continued to write and talk, we saw the wounded and dying. While they taught that duty to one’s country is the greatest thing, we already knew that death-throes are stronger. But for all that we were no mutineers, no deserters, no cowards—they were free with all these expressions. We loved our country as much as they; we went courageously into every action; but also we distinguished the false from true, we had suddenly learned to see. And we saw that there was nothing of their world left. We were all at once terribly alone; and alone we must see it through. (13)…

It is sometimes forgotten, however, that courage of a different sort may be called for in peacetime, and that this "quiet" courage is no less important than the battlefield kind. We have not been actively engaged in combat now for a long time, yet all of us in positions of responsibility are faced with making decisions that may call for a large measure of moral courage. Too often in peacetime it takes courage to "rock the boat", and I must admit that our peacetime system sometimes seems to have a built-in bias against those who have the courage to speak out against what they honestly believe to be wrong. Perhaps this is the root cause of a malaise that is common today throughout our society, but whose impact we feel especially keenly in the armed forces. I am talking about indecision. It is my belief that indecision in the face of a difficult problem reflects a lack of courage. It is the easy way out, but it is usually…
