Personal Narrative: My Road Trip To El Paso
It was Janurary 2011 when i was living in Austin Tx with my little sister and brother. We decided to take a road trip back home to El Paso Tx since wehad missed the holidays with our family. As we were filling up our gas tank i received the worst call of my life.

I remember as if it were yesterday, i answered my phone and all i could hear was breathing on the other side. I said hello about five or six times until my mom had the courage to let out the worst news i could ever receive. She stated my grandpa was very ill and terminal at the point. Her voice was so shakey and raspy that i then knew it was necessary to hurry up and get to El Paso. As we started our trip the sky was gray and cloudy, as tho god had calmed everything down for my grandpa. My grandpa whose name was Armando Uranga was a very strong and loving man. He always smelled like three flowers and always wore his button up shirts with his cowboy hat. While driving for the next eight hrs my siblings and i just remeneced on our great memories of living and growing up in our grandparents home. Nothing but laughs and cries for hours. As we approached El Paso we finally got some cell service and contacted our family members to verify the location of where my grandfather

Walking into the room and seeing our hero, our backbone just lying there with no emotion broke my heart so much i imidiately burt into tears and walked up to my grandpa to give him the biggest hug in the world. I told my grandfather i loved him so much and thanked him for the life he gave me. As we stood there talking to him and assuring him everything would be fine, i remember his last tear run down from his right eye. It was as tho he was waiting for us to get here because as soon as we said our goodbyes my grandfather took his last

I remember being asked if I wanted to go to his funeral or not. At first I didn’t want to deal with it and just wanted to hide away from all of it. Then I found out my mom was going and I thought it would be nice to be with her out of a facility. My grandfather died of kidney cancer, but since 9/11 was going on while he was in the hospital, they said he woke up thinking he was in it. This probably happen because everyone that visited him watched the coverage while they were in the room. Even though he had died, that week wasn’t so bad because I got to spend it with my mom. Although, the week coming home was unbearable because with her I was able to forget about all of our problems and pretend everything was back to normal. The events of 9/11 and my grandfather passing made me realize that even though my family was going through a lot, with the kindness of those around us, we were going to survive. I didn’t live with my mom again until I was 20 and she needed help with my brother, but I kept moving forward in my…

That was the day that my grandpa passed away. Every single part of that date is engrained in my memory. My parents had driven up to Wisconsin, and my older sister Lauren drove home for college to stay with me. It wasn’t out of the normal for my parents to quickly leave, so I didn’t think much of it. I remember going to hang out with Tatum, my best friend of the time. It was a nice day outside, so of course we were outside playing on the trampoline and doing all our weird routines like we always did. Her family, who was like a second family to me, decided to go out to eat so they brought me along. We went to La Charitas. I remember how Mrs. Teeple pulled out a funny card game for us to play, and I remember Tatum cutting out faces in her tortilla, making us all laugh. When we got back to the house we saw that my sister called, so I said bye to the Teeples and walked one minute down the road to my house. Lauren, who is one of the most emotional in the family, was left with the task of telling me that my grandpa had passed away. I had just grabbed a snack of chocolate cheerios as she started to tell me the news. I didn’t know how to react, so I ran into the basement directly to the furthest corner I could find. Lauren tried talking to me, but I wanted to be by myself. One of the hardest things I have ever done was talking to my dad on the phone after finding out. He called to tell me the plans, that he was coming home to get us, and…

In my experience, I don’t think I am reluctant to a specific identity. Houston is a very diverse city that people can find almost any type of music genre. In my community there are Hispanic and African American families. The music that is heard is of all kinds from “R&B, Pop music, Reggae, to Cumbia, Bachata and Regional Mexicano.” I have lived in the same community ever since I was born and in my opinion, I have grown up listening to the different types of music genres. This has shaped my identity to be open to different music genres and traditions.…

There’s a lot of great things I saw on my trip to Galveston, Texas. My favorite place there was the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, while I was there I got on the roller coaster… that was very interesting. There was kids scared to even get on it because a lot of different people were saying things about it. It was “scary” or maybe “you’ll fall off of it”, I was frightened. From far far away you can see the ships when you were around the beach. They looked sketchy, but, whenever I looked at it from far away I thought it was something else. I was on the beach and I was so scared because one of my good friends shot me a text and said:“You realize you’re at a place where there is sharks and a kid died there because of it a few weeks ago”.…

On Saturday April 13, 2013 I was walking through the parking garage on the USAA campus in San Antonio, TX to start my 4 hour work shift, I began to go through the turnstile and seemingly startled awake a bat. This bat began to fly and squeal in fear. It darted at my head getting caught in my hair a couple times. I started to scream and flail my arms about trying to fend off the nocturnal flying mammal in fear. During what seemed to be forever I was able to unlock the turnstile and exit the entry way but not before rupturing two discs in my neck. This incident caused quite the turn of events in my life. I had been working for USAA for 3 years and truly loved it there. I also lived in a beautiful apartment with my mother and two children and…
