Personal Narrative: My Physical Scar
In the course of my life, I have had quite a few scars. One physical scar was when I tripped, and landed on a rock, and cut my forehead. But the most memorable, was when I was eight years old, I was hurt when I accidentally landed on a table after being hit by a pillow. As a result, I had a wide open cut on the top of my head near my forehead from the landing. I was scarred for life. This was my second scar after I had the former at an earlier age.

Before I had gotten hurt from the pillow, Gisselle, my neighbor, and I were wrestling on a makeshift ring. The ring was built by us and my brother using some material that my dad had laying around. We built the ring using four pieces of plywood sitting on four forty five gallon tree containers with each corner having a steel pole standing upward with all of them being connected together with tape. Gisselle felt the need to keep being physically aggressive as her usual self by wanting to pillow fight. She was a girly girl, but never hesitated to act masculine when she needed to. So I had to go along with her commands because most of the time, she had the better ideas than me. Not to mention, she would tell on people who made her disappointed. At the same time, I did not care what really to do next, as long as I was not bored.

I agreed to pillow fight with her, so we began by swinging each other with sofa pillows. The pillow fight did not last long since that was the moment that she swung hard, and hit me with the pillow that she was using. After being hit, I landed on one of the corners of a coffee table that was next to the sofa. Surprisingly, with the table having a glass top with a wooden frame, I did not broke the glass. The wooden frame was where I landed on, giving me a gash on the top part of my head. While the blood was pouring out, I did not felt any pain whatsoever, at least not

The nurse called my mother, and told her that I had to go to the hospital. Before my mother got to the school, although she was driving pretty fast, I got to look in the mirror. My upper lip was split open, and did not look pretty. It was bleeding excessively when my mother got to the school. She quickly got me into the car, and we drove off.…

pins in my arm to hold it in place. You can see where they put them in my arm, one on top and one on the side on my wrist. They did have to cut into my arm to move the bone back in place so I have a decently sized scar on the bottom of my arm. I had to wear multiple casts, and braces. I had 1 full arm cast, 2 mid way casts, and 1 forearm brace. They didn’t give me a sling so it was very difficult to do things. This was before they made waterproof casts so I couldn’t get my cast wet. This process went on for a long time, which I don’t remember exactly how long it was. The only good thing that came out of that accident was that my old school’s teacher would write for me. I had to tell her what to write and she wrote it down.…

At just seven years old, these were the kinds of warnings I received from my parents. After being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, nothing was the same. Glucose levels, insulin dosage, shots all over, bruised fingers, blood everywhere. Reality came crashing down on me as I realized that this disease of mine would burden me for the rest of my life. At least, that’s how it seemed in my naïve, four-foot world. Eventually, I got over that trauma, but I am still witnessing the effects of this event that happened so many years ago. That experience jolted me into a hyper-progressive maturation and an increased sense of responsibility that has followed me into academia.…
