My Own Imitation
Moving to a new place can be quite intimidating; however, it is a completely fresh start especially concerning my move to NMH from North Carolina. Similar to my move Nkem’s move to the United States from Nigeria in the chapter “Imitation” in Adichie’s The Thing Around Your Neck is a completely fresh start that she had great expectations for expressed by her excitement when joining the “Rich Nigerian Men Who Sent Their Wives to America”(26) League. I was also filled with excitement like Nkem knowing I was moving to an elite league of people who go to prep school. Nkem and I experience many similar aspects of moving to a new place especially the changes we both made to fit in while still staying true to our roots. When arriving at NMH I still had the typical ugly bowl cut that every middle schooler had at the time. I had previously liked my hair …show more content…
An example of this is the extremely liberal attitude that students and the community at NMH have. Before coming to NMH I was never focussed on politics because it only led to arguments in North Carolina. I also never really had solidified ideas of my own and more just left it to my parents to identify what my beliefs are. After my first few months at NMH the liberal views were almost forced on me like the way the US “forces egalitarianism”(29) on Nkem. At first we were both forced into these different beliefs but we both would end up instilling them in ourselves. I now feel like a completely different person when I return home to North Carolina. I find myself having those arguments that I always used to avoid and being my own person instead of relying on my parents. This concept of being different when returning home I am sure would be similar for Nkem. I think that she would have a hard time fitting back in after spending so much time in the
