Personal Narrative: My Modern Day Martyr
Stephen was selected to be part of an “expansion” project of the Church. The Church continued to get more and more converts and the Apostles needed more help. The apostles asked the disciples to choose seven of them amongst themselves to continue the works of the Apostles. Stephen was selected along with six others. Stephen started committing great works and signs for the people and this upset the Jews. Jews began to argue with Stephen, but Stephen had the Holy Spirit on his side so they couldn’t win a talking battle against him. Therefore, the angered Jews went and convinced people to say “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. Stephen was then brought to the Sanhedrin. He gave his speech to the Jews, but at the end he called the Jews “stiffnecked” people and rightfully accused them of persecuting many prophets. This angered the Sanhedrin and they sentenced him to death. They dragged Stephen out of the city and stoned him. Right before he died, Stephen said “Lord do not hold this sin against them”, he then died. Stephen was very significant because he was considered to be the first martyr. The two of them were great embodiments of the Christian faith. The two of them were similar in the fact that they stood up for their faith when death was staring them in the eyes. Father Ganni and Stephen both answered to the people that had their fate in their hands by fighting with the power of God and Jesus for the ultimate reward. Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

With ever story of victory, comes a drowning idea of failure. Throughout our live, these battles are fought, taking not only mental strength, but physical as well. Some of these battles are chosen, while the rest flank from behind. With this in mind, a story of victory must be told, on behalf of my Aunt, Joenell. Her battle took place in April, of 2009, she went to the Suttee Delta hospital, in Antioch California for a doctor’s visit, for fear that something was wrong, during this visit she informed her doctor that she felt a not on her left breast. Soon after, she had a mammogram, and an ultrasound done, revealing three cancerous lumps. As the doctor went into detail, she started to realize the gravity of the situation. For the first time; at the age of 59, she was confronted with the most life threating event she had ever faced. So for a second opinion, she went to the Epic Cancer center, also in Antioch California. Certainly, the last thing anyone would like to hear during a doctor’s visit, she knew there would be some decisions to be made, time to study up.…

Who am I? That has always been an essential question for as long as I can remember. I never really understood why we had to answer that question along the way, but I’m now a senior at SJPII and I still have no idea who I am. It really bothers me that for 16 years I still haven’t figured out who I am. Constantly going from class to class and making new friends I still can’t pin point who the “real” me is.…

He had gone and preached promoting the crusade against Muslims of the east of Spain and had been turned down by nearly everyone who he had come across. After he had received the letter from Jesus he arrived at the entrance of Abbey of Saint-Dennis and had announced that he would lead an “army” of children to rescue the holy land. In the summer of 1212 three armies of children, each more than thirty thousand strong, setout from France and Germany, to walk to Jerusalem and rescue the Holy Sepulchre from the armies of Muslims. The leaders were children, boys only twelve or thirteen years old; they preached in churches, at shrines, and on highways. Now, this was an act that took major amounts of courage but children cannot lead other children and Stephen being only twelve years old, he wasn’t ready to lead…

To begin with, both of these men had very promising futures. Judas and Peter were chosen to receive a very valuable education, the personal teachings of Christ. They were handpicked by Jesus himself to be a part of the twelve apostles and were given the opportunity to learn right from wrong. Among other things, they were taught to pray, they had Jesus wash their feet, and they had the privilege of attending the last supper. In spite of all that Christ had given and taught them, He knew and warned Peter and Judas that they would both betray Him. Even though they had been warned, Judas and Peter went on to betray Jesus anyways. This made them grave sinners. After their betrayals, they realized how gravely they had sinned and they both felt remorse over their actions and repented. Though they had many similarities, it was their differences that determined their eternal fates.…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

Throughout my life, I have faced a number of crucibles but one, in particular, is more prominent than the rest. About five years ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, a traumatic experience that affected my entire family. Each member of my immediate family chose to deal with the news in different ways, however, I am the only one that elected to live in denial. Sadly, the only way I knew how to cope with such devastating news was to continue living my life as if nothing was happening. Denial is simply unsustainable as you cannot escape the memories that the crucible has formed. Nevertheless, years after my mom was originally diagnosed I began to appreciate the experience for what it was rather than shy away from it; developing hardiness.…

My mother, sister, and I were driving down Highway 124 on a hot July day when my mom screamed and slammed on the breaks. Fear rushed through our bodies. Outside the car window, a short young African American man was launched into the air. As he came down, a loud boom sounded as his body helplessly rolled off the hood of the faint green Toyota Corolla in front of us. The man lay motionless in the road while we waited for what seemed like hours for the driver to exit the car. His red shirt and gym shorts were ripped. The driver of the opposing car threw the vehicle in reverse in a spasmodic action in an attempt to end the man’s life. The injured man made an effort to crawl onto the Wendy’s sidewalk, forcing his body up on the curb to evade the car. The driver drove up onto the curb and blew its tire, just barely missing the wounded man. Realizing the driver would stop at nothing, my mother drove her white suburban in front of the car, blocking the violent perpetrator from doing any further damage.…
