Personal Narrative: My Grandpa's Cabin
Up at my grandparents cabin in Mio, Michigan, it is usually pretty calm and relaxing… Unless me and my brother are riding the ATVs of course. We ride up and down the dirt driveway, through the trails leading to the neighbors houses, and around our small private pond. I really enjoy going fast on “my” ATV (it is really my grandpa's, but he doesn't use it and my brother has his own). One day while I was up at my cabin around 2012, I was taking a break from riding, my brother asked me if I wanted to ride as a passenger.

Thinking nothing of it, I said yes and jumped on. We had only gone around the pond twice when my brother decided to go up… THE HILL! It's really not that menacing, but it just is very steep (about a 60° incline). My brother drove up the hill really fast, I could feel myself almost slipping off the back. As we reached the top, we got about 5” of air, and that's on a 700 lb machine! My brother tried to turn the machine in midair but because we were not on the ground, only the wheels turned. As we touched down, the forward momentum and the wheels being turned caused the ATV to roll over. The weight of the ATV pressed my head onto the ground, I am guessing on something hard, and my head split open. At the time me and my

When we got to the hospital, I was ushered into the ER! The room they put me in was a lot like a dentist's office, especially the chair. I nearly fell asleep twice while fidgeting in the room due to blood loss and it being 10:00 pm. Once my nurse came in, seeming very genial, she told me “we have to use staples and not stitches because the flesh on your head is very thin” (and some other, convoluted reasons) I asked if she had even put the numbing in yet when she was preparing the stapler and she said it had been put in 5 minutes ago, which I was very appreciative of. I winced as she put the staples in my

Per Reporter: “Marshall lives with his Unknown Grandmother. Marshall is intellectually disabled. On today, while out seeing my client Marshall, his grandmother became upset because after having a discussion about who should be the overseer of Marshall’s disability check. I stated to her that if she really wants to care for Marshall, it shouldn’t matter whose overseer of his check. Without warning, she suddenly jumped into her car and started backing up with force and an aggressive look on her face. I told Marshall to move to the side and I jumped in my car, backed up and left. I had to drive at high speeds to get away from her because she was chasing me in her car. I later called Marshall to check on him, he admitted that he felt as though…

It was a beautiful summer day. Not a cloud in the sky and the sun beating down on anyone under it. It was a perfect day to call over my friends and have an adventure or play ultimate Frisbee like we did almost any day. Today, my neighbor and I, Paul, decided to change things up for a change. We decided to use my homemade go-kart on the abandoned golf course, Blue Heron, behind my house. We grabbed our helmets and took brushed the dust off the go-kart from years sitting in my basement garage for years and were on our way to the long steep hills that Blue Heron had to offer.…

Up on the mountain tops, just past Payson and just before Strawberry, lies my home away from home. It’s the good old, Olson family cabin. Sitting at approximately 5300 feet elevation, Pine, Arizona is naturally 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. It is not your typical log cabin. Rather, it is a small house with a large loft, almost as big as the house. It is surrounded by tall, rich green pine trees, and for that reason my family has dubbed it “the cabin.” The Olson family cabin has had a profound affect on my life because of the lessons it taught me growing up, the people I spent time there with, and the activities it has inspired.…

The dining area of Rocking Horse Ranch was always hot and crowded during meal times, where the tired, overworked servers would bustle around attempting to provide excellent customer service for each and every inane request from the guests. I’ve heard that loud, hectic, quick-paced atmospheres filled with pretentious parents and scrambling children are almost calming sometimes. This atmosphere never brought me serenity; it gave me anxiety and stressed me out. Just the thought of sweeping melted ice cream cones off of the stained carpet and dry mopping the tiles floors gives me nightmares.…

The past few days at placement have been an emotional rollercoaster for me. In past few days I experienced tears of joy, and tears of sadness, one moment I was happy with a survivor’s growth and the next moment I was heartbroken to hear the struggles they faced to be where they are at now. At one point I felt like I had no control over my emotions and it was my emotions that had control over me. I felt so weak when I had no control, but I also felt good and free to let all my emotions out. The past few days at placement made me reevaluate certain things in my personal life, and changed my perception for a lot of things.…

The Burns family is the first Black family I met in the ward. Albert Burns Junior was cool! He had swagger, as is the contemporary way to address it. I have never been one for slang, but he, Albert Junior was cool like Dexter. His cool was different though. His cool stemmed from the fact that he grew up in the church with both parents. I wanted that; so, I watched him. I became a micro-Moroni! I thought he was royalty because I knew that he was sealed to his parents, he grew up in the church, and he was BLACK! Albert was a year behind me I think. I watched him interact with his parents and live life like normal people. I hungered to be in that position because Albert was from an all-Black family, the Burns family. Now, my international friends…

My Grandfather never complained. No matter how bad it got, he never said anything. He eventually started his own automotive repair company becoming successful. My grandfather became a successful man, attaining everything he wanted except one thing. A college degree. His father wouldn’t let him obtain an education. My grandfather promised himself he wouldn’t limit the…

It makes me feel nostalgic, like I’m a little kid adventuring around again.
