Personal Narrative: My First Semester In College
In the summer leading up to my first semester in college, my expectations were high. I assumed that all I had to do was study, attend my classes and I would breeze through the courses with ease. As I predicted, I began the fall semester effortlessly and my confidence was higher than before. As a student in the Honors College, I was presented with a mass amount of opportunities that I found it impossible to isolate myself from others which I always had a tendency to do. I began to participate in several events and volunteered through many different institutions. Collaborating with the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy my ENC 1101 class and I initiated an event where we formed a service learning project that would educate and encourage students at Miami Dade College North Campus to take part in this year’s election. Through participating in that event and many similar to it I learned that being engaged is an …show more content…
I told myself that I must seek help and luckily my realization was not too late as I contacted my advisor that same day and asked for advice. My advisor built back my confidence through his words of encouragement and after our conversation, I took the initiative to push my personal limits and gave myself positive reinforcements. Fortunately, the change improved my situation and gave me hope for the rest of my educational career. I passed my math class with an 'A’ and I am currently studying (not cramming) for my chemistry finals. I have never been relaxed about grades and I never thought I would be until this moment. However, my first semester of being in the Honors College taught me that while grades are important; they are not everything. I learned that I can only do my best and to accept the grade that I’ve earned although this may be difficult at times. I understand now, that the end result is directly related to the effort that you put in throughout the entire semester and not only in the

Throughout every college experience there are two sides to every story. The text made me realize, through vivid examples that I remember learning when I was younger, such as the gods and the giants, something that I have been told since I was young. Part of the activities I enjoy are playing music; which can explain to people to learn more about Christ and how they can help serve others just as Christ would have done to them. Technology and video games have been a tremendous part of my life. My goal in college is to get into computer science and to learn how to design games and produce code. I can utilize the amount of the money that I earn and donate it to special organizations; for example, charity; and I can also donate the money to special places, for instance, churches, and consequently they can build a larger and improved church. For the past 3 years, I have been playing badminton and in just two years of playing badminton, I played so exceptionally well that my badminton coach moved…

My time at the community college was used to focus on building a strong academic foundation, specifically tutoring international students English every week as they tried to maneuver through their lives in the United States. I remember during one particular session, a Chinese exchange student told me that when she first arrived in Seattle, she was in a state of euphoria. However, her inability to communicate fluently with her peers hindered her from adapting to the customs in America. Consequently, it impeded her from making her own place in society. Another individual, who emigrated from Eritrea, confessed she was still unfamiliar with having additional resources at her fingertips. She grew up in an area where advanced technological tools,…

Throughout high school I was able to develop many skills pertaining to the social aspects of college, which have really helped me. Growing up, I’ve been fortunate enough to live in a two parent, middle class home. I have never experienced death of a family member or someone close to me. I have been so lucky to have such a wonderful life. Once I started going to leadership camps, meeting kids who have had such difficulties in their lives I realized not everyone’s lives are as happy-go-lucky as mine. This has taught me to treat every individual I meet in college with compassion and kindness, as you never know what kind of life they’ve had. No one should be judged by his or her social class, friend group, how they dress, or come off in public settings. Each person has experienced some hardship in their life and thus everyone deserves their chance to show a person who they truly are. Using this mindset I have been able to make many friends in organizations such as the President’s Leadership Class in which I wouldn’t have typically met them. This predetermined view of the world has helped me graciously in college.…

It was the day that I was dreading all week. It was the day my brother was leaving for college. Since the day i was born me and my older brother have been really close. We liked the same things, hung out with the same people, and played on the same sports teams. We did everything together. As time went on nothing really changed even through high school we were still really close. The day he was leaving for college I was at my friends house and didn’t want to go home until the minute he was leaving. I didn’t want to see him until he left because i knew it was going to be hard for me to watch him leave so i figured if i didn’t see him until he said bye it wouldn’t be as bad. Another part of me also didn’t want to show him weakness, that i was…

Everyone wants good grades throughout their years in school, mainly in high school. I am more of a math and science person, other subjects like history and government. Topics like politics, the constitution, the United States Government, political parties and anything else having to do with Government class I had no interest in when I signed up for classes. I know this is something that I should be keeping up to date on because of the upcoming election and everything that changes with the government. The spring of my sophomore year I was looking for different classes to take, I saw AP Government. I thought I could do well in that class, I was motivated to learn something new and excel at something I was not very interested in. The first day of junior year came quickly. Then the first AP government test came even quicker. I studied the night before for hours thinking positive thoughts and finding funny ways to remember different answers. Going into the test I thought I was ready, but when I saw the test I froze. Thinking different thoughts like “When did we learn this?” or “Why did I take this class?”. I pushed all the negative thoughts to the side and completed the test to the best of my ability. The day we got our test back I looked down and about cried. I had never done that bad on a test.…

The proudest moment in my high school career is when I signed myself to take my first AP class. I was really nervous about going to the meeting to sign myself up to get the summer assignment because I felt that I was not ready for the work load, and I would not be able to pass the class. My excuse for not going to the meeting was that I was helping in the cafeteria and I was going to be really late, but when I told my two best friends Jenny and Virginia that I wasn't going to take it anymore. They got so frustrated and annoyed with me because they said I was stupid if I didn’t take AP calculus because that was my favorite subject and I needed a challenge in that class. They also made me remember when I would tell them that Math Analysis was…
