Personal Narrative: My First Brush With An Art Museum
My First Brush with an Art Museum Being a fairly artist person for my entire life, I feel like it is a little weird that I have never been to an ‘art museum’. I grew up with a very artist mother, who did a lot of carvings and even won prizes for some of her carvings, and I believe that artistic talent rubbed off on me as well. I have always had interest in art, and strived in high school where I was placed in advanced art, painting and drawing classes. These days, I have traded my pencils and paintbrushes for mouse-pointers and Photoshop. So I was pretty excited to go to the Minneapolis Art Institute’s art museum over Spring Break, and excited to get a good grasp on some of the changes and fads that came out during different eras of art. …show more content…
This piece is called Gubbin’s Return, and is created by Richard Shaw in 1981. This piece of work caught me completely off guard, because I thought it was just a bunch of things stuck together, but after reading about it, it’s all made from porcelain! The amount of detail put into the box, the wine bottle, the pieces of wood, its ridiculous how real it all looks. Really awesome piece of work. I wanted to write about something older, so I chose the Water Pitcher from the 18th century that was on display in the special exhibitions area. Just to think that this beautiful piece was used as an everyday water pitcher, but has so much character carved into the bronze. Comparing it to a water pitcher that you and I would use today is almost a slap in the face. And it was a large piece as well, and being made of bronze I’m sure it was quite heavy. Perhaps it was a water pitcher that was brought out on special occasions, or for the king or leader of a civilization, which is why it is so intricate. Keeping in the older items, the next piece I am writing about is called Plate, from the Sung Dynasty(~1000 AD). It really caught my eye, because it resembles a smiley face. But it was awesome to be that close to a plate that someone was eating on over a thousand years

The two sculptures I chose were The Statue of the Goddess Sakhmet and Monumental Figure. The Sakhmet statue is from the New Kingdom era, 18th Dynasty. Dated all the way back to ca. 1390-1352 B.C. in Egypt. It is made out of granodiorite. There are two identical at the museum in New York. The Monumental Figure is from the 9th century. It was found in Mexico, it is from the Mayan culture. The statue is classified as a stone-sculpture. You can find the Monumental figure in gallery 358 and the Goddess Sakhmet you can find in gallery 135 at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.…

The desire for the finer things in life is eternal, and the strive for beauty and elegance can be seen in all ages. In regards to Islamic pottery, the elaborate and decorative nature of pieces from Kashan cannot be beaten. Now I will analyze a specific production from Kashan, a lustre bowl produced during the Seljuq Period (11th to 13th centuries), labeled as “Object D-12” in the UCSB Jewel Room and depicted below: In this image one can see the same line of eyebrows, drawn out eyes, and thin lips on the center figure that can also be seen on the polo player of Object D-12. Both men also have a halo surrounding them, enshrining them with a sense of importance and holiness. In this piece, dated at the early 13th century, the center figure appears…

The work of art I have chosen is Jar (p.351) by Ácoma Pueblo. This pottery was created around 1850 to 1900. These pots are created with local earthenware, and they are shaped without a wheel. The designs are decorated in open fires with pigments made from earthen powders. Each Pueblo has their own style, and the designs on the pots are typically meant to delight children, provide humor and sometimes public scoldings.…

Far from trying to transcend the natural setting, the sculpture seems to already be beaten and worn by the elements. It is a slab of stone, slightly curved. It is corten steel, with different colors of black, blue, purple, white, and various other grainy shades. Of all the pieces in the garden, this one seems least like a piece of art, and more like a misplaced piece of décor. The most surreal of the pieces in the garden is Frank Stella’s Decanter. It is metal affixed to a straight backdrop. There is a broad silver ring, with a backdrop of twisting blackness, and striped triangles created in such a way that they seem to have the depth of cones. Lastly that stood out is David Smith’s Two Circle Sentinel. It is a myriad of square sheets, curving scraps, and two circular adornments. The “sentinel” resides on a square podium. Outside the ridges of metal cast dramatic shadows on the steel, and it would no doubt look amazing in the rain, with water running down one ridge to the…

Anyone at all familiar with Dale Chihuly's work knows that the individual glass objects he creates represent only isolated moments inside a complex and vastly creative mind. Any of his Baskets, Chandeliers, Cylinders, or Floats is as much an image as it is an object. They reference to all the forms that precede and follow it, to the action and process that go into its making and to the intuitive form idea, which is of its origin. Chihuly's assertiveness for obsessively photographing his glass and his eagerness to have it described in words are only representations of his natural habit as an artist to gather pieces into an astonishing accumulation and his dedication for furthering his artworks by enlarging these accumulations on a much grander scale. In the ways in which he lights and installs his artwork are what makes it truly unique and indifferent. These unique ideas work to create a sense of wonder, if only by allowing the public to understand and awe at one of his works of art. In the year of 2003, Chihuly won the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Glass Art Society in Seattle, Washington; 2002 Gold Medal Award, National Arts Club, New York, New York; 2001 Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts, University of Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut; 2007 Washington State Medal of Merit, Olympia, Washington.…

As an art student, I find the art that we learn about in class very interesting because it is art that I would never be interested in, but yet after learning the details I enjoy them. Although I don’t mind learning art through power points, I find physically looking at art more enjoyable. Getting the whole experience of physical artwork is a more exciting way to learn and catches my interest more, which is why I was so excited to visit a new museum and look at some art. For this assignment I decided to go to the LACMA museum. I have been to many museums before, but I have not visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art yet so I was very excited. I find a lot of art very fascinating, but I am more interested in the more contemporary and modern arts. I am a design major so I was drawn to the sculptural art pieces that were displayed outside the building. One piece in particular that I found very beautiful and fascinating was an outside display entitled “Urban Light”.…

The artifact I chose from the museum is the Maya calendar. It’s a big brown circle figured stone with 2 layers; each one contains symbols with a different meaning each. It was used dating back to at least the 6th century BC by the Mayas, in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and in many modern communities in the Guatemalan highlands. The Maya Calendar was made through the knowledge of ancient civilizations and it was carved and improved by the Mayas. It has a diameter of 3.54 meters and weighs 24 tons. They used it to channel their energy, to stay synchronized with the universe, and their own spirit. With this artifact the Mayas were able to observe the energy sent from the center of the Galaxy’s and from the Sun. All this information was translated…

When I first arrived at Maidu Museum I was pleasantly surprised of how beautiful it looked. I automatically wanted to take the walk first and see how beautiful it looked, because the last time I saw something so beautiful was in China, Zhangjiajie. However this was amazing site, because it was in California. I never knew that such a place existed nearby, watching everything on the trails was amazing I just wished I was able to get closer to it. Plus at the same time I was quite envious of the Nisenan Maidu people, because they were able to call this place there home and lasted for thousands of years. When finished I felt so relaxed of everything, I don't know why but walking around nature is just something that I have found relaxing probably…
