Personal Narrative: My Experience Of Mentoring
My experience in teaching has mainly been in the role of teaching assistant for various courses at McGill University. I believe that academic teaching and mentoring is a challenging endeavor. To be effective as a teacher and as an advisor, I will encourage the following skills that I have learned and applied at McGill as a teaching assistant. During my senior graduate years, I took a leadership role in the Expert Systems in Electrical Design (ECSE 549) course, which included the opportunity to mentor and advice graduate students. This course taught students the basic principles involved in designing electricomagnetic devices. It provided an insight into how computers can play a role in the design process. Students were encouraged to explore machine learning and optimization techniques. The course had a group project component and I managed the students in teams of 3-4 members. My approach to mentoring involved providing guidance and positive reinforcement. The attempt was not just to provide the tools, but also to make them independent researchers. Many students later on applied the lessons they had learned in this subject in their research work. I played a similar role in the Software Engineering Practice (ECSE 428) undergraduate course where I managed project teams, each comprising of …show more content…
Involvement of students in a classroom environment is essential for learning. The key is to connect to the audience by applying examples from everyday real life which they can easily relate to. Visual aids are helpful to achieve such a goal and I tried to include these wherever possible in my lectures and laboratory procedure manuals. In order to be transparent while grading assignments or exams, I always prepared a rubric in consultation with the faculty member and provided it to students beforehand. This ensured that students carried a clear understanding in terms of what was expected from

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

In addition to my enthusiasm for investing in young lives, I have done some volunteering as a teaching assistant to get some hands-on classroom experience for formal teaching. My experience at the school allowed me to acquire a number of skills and also help enhance my weaker ones. The key skills and strength that I possess for success include my enthusiasm and dedication to my assigned duties and my ability to support and inspire young people through being a good listener to them and offering appropriate advice. I am also highly skilled in assisting the instructor in supervision of students’ arrival and departure time, performing clerical and record keeping tasks and maintaining discipline of the classroom in the absence of the instructor. One of my greatest strengths is helping maintain a well-disciplined learning environment, with minimal interruptions and maximum productivity. This is achieved by pulling misbehaving students aside, reinforcing positive behaviour, and implementing a reward system.…

My parents and my brother devoted their few years completely for his treatment. Today, my brother is a successful engineer working in the bay area.
