Personal Narrative: My Athletic Experience
It was in the year 2011 and I was in 6th grade. I went out to seek new athletic experience. So I did it and I joined the wrestling team at my junior high. It was a very different hobby as I had never been in a match or even know what It was about. As time came I started understanding more and more until I got better at the sport. A couple of days before my first match I earned a varsity spot. I felt like I wasn't ready, but that wasn't gonna stop me from going out there and doing the best I can. When the day came I was very nervous. I was so nervous I felt my heart beating very hard. My match was next and I was warming up. I came out on the mat and I saw my opponent in the eyes and we were ready. We got on our stance and it all started. There were many people watching, the parents, my team, the other teams present and my coaches.I saw the crowds standing up screaming, jumping, and moving their hands all over. …show more content…
After the first period ended, we wen on to the second. I felt like I was doing pretty good, but It wasn't over. After a couple of takedowns and rolling around here and there and i got pinned. I was kind of mad, but since I had never wrestled before I felt I could've done more to my ability than what i had shown out on the mat, but i felt good since I had an acceptable performance for a beginners standards.I went to go take a seat and my coach stopped me and told me that for my first match I did pretty good. I felt the same way, but felt like It was still a loss. He also said they were tough teams and it was my first match but in varsity so it wasn't gonna be easy for a first match. What I really liked was the he said If I train harder I will do better. Well, obviously if you train more you will get better, but at least he didn't say something

Wrestling is tough, it is a sport much from its participants, but if one has the courage to step out on the mat dressed in a uniform that leaves a little imagination and challenge another human to a match to see who the better man is. Danger can be found in every sport, and wrestling are no more prone to injury’s to soccer, football, track stars, lacrosse. Wrestling creates a sense of accountable for one’s actions. Those that work hard, succeed. There is no one to hide behind; every flaw and mistake is brought forth in a match. It takes a great deal of mental toughness and sacrifice nights with friends for extra practice and consideration, favorite food to lose the extra pound, and sleep when one needs to wake up at 4am to go for a run before school begins. That competitive nature of clashing with another human being creates a sense of community within the wrestling world. Those that have never participated in the sport have a tough time understanding this. Opponents’ must shake hands before and after, showing respect for the other fighter, win or lose. It is uncommon to see administration in the form of an embrace even after one has lost a tough battle. These values are created through combative sports, and stay with a wrestle for the remainder of their…

My high school cross country coach has been a very influential person to me. He has mentored me and encouraged me through four years of cross country. Because of his direction I trained myself into one of his fastest runners. I didn’t just get faster, I also learned a very important life lesson. To always try my best and be determined to achieve my goals. In one year I dropped my 5k time from a 19:08 to a 17:58. A result of my dedication. I know I won’t be the fastest runner, but I can be the hardest working…

I was 14 years old. The day was sunny and warm with a few clouds in the sky. I had a tournament that day at my school. The tournament started in the afternoon and ended in the evening. My school is Homedale middle school. The tournament was in the school’s gym. The tournament was a wrestling tournament, it's was if you lose twice you're out. I had to wrestle my opponent, while my coach sat on the sidelines giving me tips on what to do. The matt that I wrestled on had a rim and he sat on the outside of it. We went on that felt like ages. We went for a long time, we both were getting tired. So tired that we practically laying on each other. After a long tiring and exhausting match, I saw an opportunity. The opportunity was huge. Like if I missed…

I had a rough draft made, but I decided it didn't go with how I was feeling with everything going on. I decided to write the paper that would prove to my mother why I should continue to do wrestling. I had many ideas that I wrote down like quotes that apply, but I didn't realize till after I wrote the ideas down, that I was wasting too much time thinking of what to write than actually typing the paper. I thought about the people that made me realize that I want to continue to wrestling. I got the sense of why wrestling can help me learn things that I can use for the future. "It's that kind of sport where you look in the mirror and you either see a winner or a loser" I was told from a wise man I met at a wrestling match. Learning to be confident is part of winning or losing a match. Usually whoever put more hours of work into wrestling, it's a most guaranteed win. But everybody makes mistakes and that's when part of confidence comes in. Wrestling teaches many things that other sports doesn't always. I think it's one of the hardest, but most rewarding sports anyone can participate in. "Always improving" my coach always tells me. Like in writing my teacher explains, "It's never finished; it's just due." I'm starting to fathom how wrestling applies to many things in…

As the wrestling season approached one of the wrestlers kept asking me if I was going to wrestle and he was always disappointed when I would say no, but he would continue to ask me until I agreed to at least come to a few open mats, before the actual season starts. At the open mats I realized how little I actually knew about wrestling, but that fact aside it was fun. We would play dodgeball as part of our warm-up and as our cool down at the end, I foolishly thought that was going to be an everyday occurrence during the regular season, so I went out for the regular season, and received quite the reality check. I thought “You know what? I could go out for the heck of it and breeze through behind the scenes without having to put forth too much effort.” In the sport of wrestling there is no behind the scenes, when you step out onto the mat it is you and the wrestler across from you and no one else. The first few weeks, in any sport, are designed to weed out the weak and condition the athletes, it was at this time that I realized how hard this was going to be and I so badly wanted to quit. I would go home with a crushed feeling and with a look of despair on my…

I started wrestling in sixth grade. Even though I didn’t win one of my first seven matches, I developed into a successful wrestler. In high school I won tournaments and beat high-quality wrestlers. During my junior year I was determined to become a great wrestler. I worked harder than ever and didn’t let anyone stop me. That year I lost the Illinois state wrestling tournament championship match by one point. Over the next six months between my junior and senior season I was runner up at AAU national tournament and wrestled at Disney Land in Florida at the Disney Duals with over 50 other teams and only lost 1 of 8 matches. These are a few of my achievements in high school. Now that I am in college there are many similarities and differences between high school practices and college practices.…

My first year of wrestling was in high school my junior year. I wrestled at Forbush High School in the 106/113 pound weight class throughout this winter sport. Before, I must admit that I did at many different times think that the sport of wrestling was the most dumb and homosexual sport ever. One of my friends came up to me a few months after and asked me what I thought about wrestling. I told him like I said to everyone else, “It’s the most homosexual sport ever created.” He said, “When you’re out there wrestling, you don’t think about it. I challenge you to come out this year and wrestle and tell me if you think about anything being homosexual out there.” I accepted his challenge. My first day of wrestling practice was pretty great; I got to learn some new moves. Shortly after a month had went by, we had our first match. I was the first one up. We shook hands and the referee blew the whistle; it was on then. He took the first shot. I sprawled. I snapped around him to put a half on him to break him down. After I broke him down, I maneuvered a cross face cradle on him to put him into a pinning position. I held it as tightly as I could, and shortly after, the referee’s hands slapped the mat to signal that the match was over. We went back and shook hands again and right then I realized that I had won my match when the referee raised my hand. It was the most incredible feeling in my life to win my first match in 38 seconds. I told myself that I was sticking with it; I wasn’t going to give up on this sport. Did I think about how homosexual it was? No, I went out there and did the best I could. My friend was right, you don’t think about those kinds of things when you’re wrestling. Most people tell me each and every day that wrestling isn’t a hard sport or that it’s a homosexual sport. Famous wrestlers are known to this very day for the history they’ve created and made throughout wrestling in their high school or college days.…

After a few weeks of practice, now it gets to the actual fun part. It's a friday night everyone’s tired from all the practices that week, we are sweaty, ready to go home and relax but then all of us realize that we have to wrestle for a varsity spot. I was in the circle waiting for my partner to be ready, I started off a little nervous because it still was my first time wrestling. I lined up, shook my partner's hand and once I heard that whistle going off my instincts kick. I wrestled my butt off to win, not feeling any pain as he dropped me to the ground. Fighting to win that match, there’s 30 seconds left and I was down by one point. But at the end I took a shot and ended up winning. I didn’t give up until I heard that last buzzer ring, I didn’t stop and keep I kept my guard up.…

For most people, winning is harder than losing, but in a sport as competitive as wrestling that is not the case. There is a lot of pressure put on you to be the best you can be, and that's why I like it so much. I was never really a great athlete, so when the opportunity came up to join the wrestling team when I was a freshman, I was a little skeptical. My first few weeks on the team were challenging; I couldn't beat anyone at practice, and I couldn't bench press much. My self-esteem took a big hit those first few weeks. After a while I started to enjoy it though.…
