Personal Narrative: Long Beach Patrol
I am (was) a lifeguard for Long Beach Township Beach Patrol for 6 years in the town of Spray Beach and rent have rented an apartment in Ship Bottom for the past 3 summers.
Last summer, I was on my way to work, in my lifeguard uniform travelling on a back street with a 25 mph speed limit when I came up behind a vehicle going about 15 mph. After a block or so I adjusted my car to see if there was traffic or pedestrians holding him up. There were none. The vehicle then pulled over and I slowed down even more and then assumed he was letting me pass so I passed and it was an undercover officer who then pulled me over. I was rudely greeted by the officer saying, “I don’t care how late I make you for your job; and I don’t care if you are a guard.”

I stop. He goes through; I pull up and come to a complete stop again. I put on my blinker, allow pedestrians to cross, and also notice the officer ahead slowing down. I make my right hand turn and pull into the police station parking lot, thinking back to the advice of the Mayor to stay off the side streets and the advice of anyone I’ve talked to, to stay away from police cars. At this point I am unaware that the PO turned around and followed me into the parking lot until he put on his lights. I was told the stop was for my tints. He then accused me of driving suspiciously because I made a turn and asked if I was trying to avoid him. I said no. He asked if I had ever been arrested before, to which I said yes. He returned to his car, another officer arrived. I’m then approached again by the initial officer, asked to step out of my car, and then asked to search. I did not consent. The other officer begins walking around my car and poking his head into my windows. Again, the PO said he would call the dogs if I didn’t let him search my car. I was detained for over an hour this time; issued 3 tickets: safety glasses, visibility/lights, and failure to give proper signal. That same day I called (twice) to submit my complaint (again) for over aggressive ticketing and searches by LBT officers, and that I felt I was being harassed by the police department. I spoke with a sergeant, who told me they would look into the matter and get back to me. No one ever called

Officer, I am a student at Harvard University. There is no reason why I should be getting pulled over right now. I am a straight A student and I have a 4.0 GPA, was first in my class and made a whole one hundred thousand dollars for cancer, while I was also working on a project for starving children in Africa. I am a good person because of all of this. I am a good student, worked hard for good causes, and this is the thanks I get from society. I get pulled over for going a little over the speed limit.…

On the fourteenth I was assigned to the traffic unit on the night shift. The officer assigned to this position is given a traffic unit police vehicle, which is equipped with more items then other patrol cars. Some of the things being spike strips, laser radars and other various items. When on traffic duty the primary focus is on speeders. We were stationed near I-96 and took radar for the remainder of the night. We cited over twenty vehicles and had some other intense moments. For one of the stops we pulled over a felon that had a firearm in the vehicle. At this moment, my heart was beating much quicker and the situation became much more serious. We radio into dispatch for a priority unit to back us up. We then arrested the individual and drove to the jail. Most of the night consisted on specifically traffic duty with a slight amount of citizen calls.…

Just one, Sheriff’s Explorer Program. It may seem odd at first, since I had absolutely zero interest in law enforcement. Maybe for a split second, I thought about becoming a homicide detective. As it was my mother’s dream, unfortunately with no papers and mouths to feed, it was far from reality. Nevertheless, I joined the program. Just to be clear, this was no boy scouts club. LASD does not play around, and they expect nothing but absolute perfection from you. Which is why they put you through an agonizing 18-week course. Every week, your Saturday was wasted to attend the course, at 5 AM sharp. Business attire was to be worn. Let me tell you, it had to be flawless. Any imperfection, and instructors were on you all day. Yet, many like myself went through it.…

Sandra Bland was arrested for not using her signal light while turning. She refused to get out of the car so the officer opened the door and tried to pull her out. Officer Encinia told Bland she was under arrest. She repeatedly asked why. The trooper did not answer, other than to say, "I am giving you a lawful order. "At one point, after Officer Encinia aimed what appeared to be a Taser at Bland, she stepped out of her car. Later, she can be heard saying: “You’re a real man now. You just slammed me, knocked my head in the ground." (Hassan, Carma, Holly Yan, and Max Blau. "Sandra Bland's Family Settles for $1.9M in Wrongful Death Suit." CNN. Cable News Network, 15 Sept. 2016. Web. 08 Mar. 2017.) This is what I mean by Police Officers using unnecessary force on us in minor situations. If I were to see these shootings by police officers and then to get pulled over by one, I would not get out of the car so easily either. It is so scary getting pulled over by police officers these days because you never know what kind of cop is pulling you…

Sweat came down my nose dripping like if I were sweating bullets. I was being put to the test both mentally and physically, and I never expected it to be this hard. I was being yelled at receiving all the attention to keep going and not stopping. Even though I'm going through this, I stayed motivated, thinking to myself that I can do one more. At the end of the day, I reminded myself of a Navy Seal instructor saying, “Whatever you have to do, just find an excuse to win, keep going.” Just these few words made me survive the night and find that reason to keep going. Now I know what it takes to be on the California highway patrol.…

It is unavoidable to look away from this injustice. For years, people suffer from these crimes of violence! Officer's use of brute force to take down criminals, even the innocent if they don’t comply with the law. These barbaric strategies police officers do to “protect us” have not benefited us. We fear when we see a cop. We fear when our cars are stopped. We fear when we see their weaponry. Police officers are supposed to make us feel safe, but look at the mess we find ourselves in.…

    Ride Along

I went on my ride along on Tuesday, April 30 with the NM State Police. I rode along with senior patrolman Israel Rodriguez. I had a lot of fun and think I learned a lot about how law enforcement actually works. The officer showed that he is always thinking about the law and how he has to be very careful in what he does so that he doesn’t get god evidence suppressed in court because he makes a small mistake. He said that it’s hard enough to get evidence admitted sometimes even when you collect it lawfully. We started out by cruising I-25 until we noticed a southbound vehicle with the driver not wearing his seatbelt. We pulled him over and gave him a citation and went on. We then received a call about a hit and run coming into town from Deming so we parked out and looked for the vehicle to come by that fit the description that the dispatcher gave us. We were waiting when we received another call about suspected child abuse on a 6 month old girl. As we were driving back to the station we kept getting more interesting information about the case. It turns out that the alleged abuser is a deputy with the Sheriff’s office and LCPD had already responded to the domestic violence call and didn’t take any action against the officer. The child had been returned to the mother with red marks on her neck, legs, and back and the mother had taken pictures. Officer Rodriguez spoke with the mother and heard about the officer’s previous use of intimidation and force when they fought, but that she didn’t want to proceed with charges, just that she wanted the incident documented. Officer Rodriguez wrote up a report and we jumped back on the highway when almost immediately we were lights and sirens toward a vehicle vs. truck collision on 185. We raced over there and jumped on the scene in which the motorcyclist was very injured and they ended up calling the helicopter to airlift him to the El Paso trauma unit. After a while Officer Rodriguez…

There have been ongoing debates about the guidelines for police officers when conducting discretionary searches. One police department that has been in the headlines for its practices of discretionary searches have been the New York City’s Police Department. New York City’s Stop and frisk policy allowed police officers to stop and search an individual on the street at their discretion based on suspicion of criminal activity. One of the most highly publicized cases of NYPD’s stop and frisk tactic was the 2014 death of Eric Garner in the hands of Staten Island Police Department. The Eric Garner’s case followed outpours from citizens calling for change in NYPD’s stop and frisk guidelines and other police departments as well. This week’s article…

The volatile issues that surrounds “racial profiling” has led police agencies across the nation to start collecting information about traffic stops, especially for people of color. The controversy is supported by research that police officers may be racially biased in their decision making to stop someone. The article that was published in 2012 studies the consensus and conflict theories concerning racial disparities in the rate of police stops. The author suggested that both police deployment and race out of place arguments played a significant role in explaining the patterns of street stops, traffic stops, probable cause and consent searches.…

Stop-and- frisk has created uneasy tension between police and the citizens of New York City, especially those of minorities. African Americans and Hispanics that follow the law have been harassed and humiliated, and as a result, have become hesitant to come into contact with police for fear of unfair treatment. It is sad that the community has a relationship with the police that rests on thin ice because of…

    Racial Profiling

    • 811 Words

I have been a victim of racial profiling. My case is a little different because I was being stopped as I walked home from school. Police say that if they don't arrest or ticket you then it can not be racial profiling but they are far from the truth. This is wrong because I did a test with a white friend of mine. We used my mother's Jeep and we drove through a hot spot in Riverdale Park, Maryland. First we drove around until we found a cop doing radar check on passing cars. Now we decided to see if they would pull over my white friend so he drove by the cop ten times in 10 minutes and he was driving very slow as if he was lost. The cop never paid him any mind. Keep in mind that we are videotaping this as it happens. So, far this is proving my point about racial profiling does happen, but what happen next was amazing. Then it was my turn to drive pass this cop and see what was going to happen as I drove pass the cop and nothing happen. I was surprised that he didn't stop me, but I spoke to soon cause as I rounded the corner there were the blue lights that I have are come accustomed to see in Riverdale Park. Since this has happen to me before I knew the routine. (Turn of the engine and get on the ground spread eagle) I asked the cop what he had pulled me over for and he said I looked suspicious. This is a common term used when a cop is committing the form of misconduct. In this…
