Personal Narrative: How Society Changed My Life
Society has shaped me in many different ways. One of the biggest impacts that has definitely stood out during my lifetime is having such a unique culture and slowly assimilating to more of an American lifestyle. Having parents who have immigrated from different countries is starting to become more “normal” than it was in the past due to the United States becoming more and more diverse. My mother immigrated to the United States from Lebanon when she was six years old and my father immigrated from Syria when he was three years old. Both of my parents are Armenian, and living in a mostly white community, like Redondo Beach, gave most of my neighbors somewhat of a culture shock. Being culturally different from my peers resulted my society to exert to ethnocentrism, cultural relativism and social conformity. During my elementary school years I experienced a lot of ethnocentrism. Almost all, if not all, of the people I associated …show more content…
My school friends would tell me that the clothes my family members bought me were not cool enough and I would then look for clothes that they would approve of. I started acting more like my peers because if I didn’t they would point it out and I would feel as if I couldn’t act the way I wanted to. Not only did I experience social conformity from my friends but also from my family. If I came home from school acting the way my friends would, my family members would scold me into acting the way they wanted me to act. My family member also disapproved of many articles of clothing that were in-style at the time and they would bring me clothes that they approved of. I experienced social conformity from my American community and from my Armenian community, throughout my life I felt like I was juggling two different lives to please and be accepted by both

“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself.…

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

With ever story of victory, comes a drowning idea of failure. Throughout our live, these battles are fought, taking not only mental strength, but physical as well. Some of these battles are chosen, while the rest flank from behind. With this in mind, a story of victory must be told, on behalf of my Aunt, Joenell. Her battle took place in April, of 2009, she went to the Suttee Delta hospital, in Antioch California for a doctor’s visit, for fear that something was wrong, during this visit she informed her doctor that she felt a not on her left breast. Soon after, she had a mammogram, and an ultrasound done, revealing three cancerous lumps. As the doctor went into detail, she started to realize the gravity of the situation. For the first time; at the age of 59, she was confronted with the most life threating event she had ever faced. So for a second opinion, she went to the Epic Cancer center, also in Antioch California. Certainly, the last thing anyone would like to hear during a doctor’s visit, she knew there would be some decisions to be made, time to study up.…

Throughout the past year I have endured several life changing occurances. One of my family members troubled through the treturous stages of cancer and unfortunately has passed at this time. If I have taken anything away from this, it is that family is the most important resource in a persons life. Without those people who tell you that you can, regardless of the circumstances, becoming succesful could be very challenging. After clearing my head, I was able to start thinking of a career choice that would make me enjoy going to work. I encountered an opening at a local CVS/Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician and applied. After being hired, I immediately fell in love with the surroundings, the people, the patient interaction, and the knowledge…

When I was younger, I always accepted the words of my parents without any second thought. Maybe I was afraid to protest the authority figures in my life, or maybe I was too afraid to speak for myself. I learned not to question anyone. I became subdued and submissive, I felt my creativity being stifled. Introverted , quiet people were not welcome in this household, and were made into extroverts, whether or not it affected their well-being. Socialization has affected my life in many ways, as it does for every human being on Earth.…

An example of ethnocentrism that I have personally witnessed, was when I was working at a family owned restaurant. My bosses were a Vietnamese family who, from adults to the kids, were very racist. When I talked to my boss they would occasionally say racial slurs towards African American customers. They made very inappropriate comments in secret that made me very uncomfortable. Even their children who were very young had an ethnocentric view on the African American culture and race. The family would say that African-American’s are untrustworthy or dangerous. They even went as far as to not allow any of the children be friends with any African Americans. I eventually left such a terrible environment and still haven’t seen them…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

Each and everyday people walk the halls of this school. You see people walking on the streets in their neighborhood. They are all walking forward. Why? That is what is normal. We have been doing it this “normal” way since humans could walk. Baby's first learning to walk don't walk backwards do they? No, they are biologically programmed to move forward. I wanted the breaking of my norm to be obvious. What better way than to walk backwards and go “against the crowd”.…

The fake grass was deeply green like usual, the sun continued to shine like it did everyday till 7 o’clock sharp, and as everyone wore their dull white shirts, I thought to myself “why did our society end up so euphoric?” Was I the only one who thought about the world before “The great crisis” or did someone else think the same way as me? It was 5080 and “the great crisis” happened about 300 years ago way before I was born, no one ever speaked of the old America, because it was considered a crime to think of such evil. But tomorrow was every girl in the 10th grades birthday, we were all turning 15, this meant that 10 out of the 43 girls would be picked as interns to the woman elders who society called the wise women. One of…

When I was younger, I typically received the things I wanted, things such as toys – being that I was an only child – and never worried about hearing the answer, “No”. I had this insane idea that the world revolved around me. Although I still had the concept in my head, that it was all about me when I was informed I would be an older sister, I knew that nothing would be the same. Before I was a sister, I never took anyone else into consideration, and I was never told to do otherwise. I was around four years old, when this news has changed my life forever.…

I believe in change. Not changing who you are on the outside or fixing who you are on the inside; but changing to be the best version of yourself. Living up the your own expectations to be the best and only person you could imagine yourself being. About 5 years ago, I realized I wasn’t the person I wanted to be. I would gaze at myself and just stare at that little fat girl staring back at me. No one ever knew I thought or felt this way. If I ever called myself ugly or fat I would be lectured about how I should never think like that. So I kept it to myself. I was picked on by what seemed like everyone. Every Time I went to a dance. Every Time I went to a football game. There was always many kids who made sure to crumble my self confidence to…

The people who shape and influence us are usually our parents, siblings, extended family, and friends. Because of this we pick up the language they speak, the religion they believe in, the food they like, the way they dress and almost everything else that makes up that family unit. The things we are used to are the things we have experienced since birth, the things that we consider to be ‘normal’. What we grow up doing is completely different to what someone else around the world will grow up doing, as a result of this, we all grow up with different ideas, views and sense of the norm.…
