Personal Narrative-Flat Bottom Road
The recent summer rainstorms have transformed the roadways, of Wrongberight a rural hamlet on the eastern shores of Virginia, into a never-ending slip and slide. Late Saturday afternoon, vivacious Clemmy Sue Jarvis, a petite woman of sixty three, cautiously pulled out of her driveway, and slowly turned south on to Flat Bottom Road. She maneuvered the rain soaked road with great care. Nevertheless, fifty yards from her dearest friend Estelle Louise’s long dirt driveway, her rusty Chevy pickup, that she has kept mobile for years with hairpins, bubble gum, and duct tape, skidded across a massive oil slick. However, they do not get far when a gale force wind kicked in followed by thick rain and daunting thunder and lightning. Estelle Louise reached the Chevy first. Once inside she realized her friend had never replaced the broken window, on the passenger side. She automatically, rummaged under her seat, until she located a large black plastic trash bag, a roll of duct tape, and then created a makeshift window. Shortly afterwards Clemmie Sue climbed in to the cab of the pickup and shut the door. When she looked over at Estelle Louise and saw what she had done, she says, “Lord have mercy, Estelle Louis, I wants to be thanking you a heap for fixing that there window.” “You be welcome,” Estelle Louise said. “Clemmy Sue, imma thinking, maybe we ought not be going to Ruby’s tonight. Cause, we be looking mighty poorly.” “Oh! Hells bells, imma sure Ruby ain’t gonna care what we be looking like, so long as we gots money.” Clemmy Sue answered. Then started the engine and headed out.
