Personal Narrative: Five Ways To Borrow A Dog
We’re all chasing a greater sense of well-being. Right? Joining the gym, eliminating dairy, rolling out our yoga mat. There is such a wonderful array of options now, so many exciting ways to feel energised, relaxed and fulfilled. But sometimes this simple, easily accessible and totally free option goes overlooked. Nature is everywhere, a gift, a treasure-trove, if only we remember to check in, to notice, to wake up and dive in. Here are five ways to do just that.

1. Borrow A Dog.
Getting a dog was the best thing I ever did. And the greatest joy of all was the unforeseen privilege of witnessing the changing seasons, day by day, leaf by leaf. I had prepared myself for the practicalities of welcoming a dog into my life. I had obviously also thought about the fact that she would need walking, whatever the weather. But I hadn’t fully envisioned the reality of that fact, the overwhelming gratitude I would come to feel towards her for getting me out of the house every day. In the dark and the buffeting storms. In sideways rain and pelting hail. Never have I felt more alive and more a part of nature. I am lucky enough to live near a small wood which naturally became the obvious place to roam with my dog and in those woods I saw nature unfurl before my very eyes. In subtle and big ways, in

Today we rarely need to wait for anything; parcels arrive almost as soon as we’ve clicked ‘purchase’, information is at our fingertips, 24/7, and we are only ever moments away from every TV programme we have ever missed. But, thankfully, nature resolutely refuses to move into the crazy speed of the twenty first century and will not be rushed. Watching the slow development of a plant and playing a part in its thriving, lovingly nurturing it, offers a valuable opportunity to slow down and reconnect to natural rhythms and to a more mindful

In spite of having three fish named Sharky, Goldy, and Angel, one frog named Froggy, one spoiled guinea pig named Tilly, two Labs named Molly and Zeus (also known as the neighborhood terrors), and one miniature schnauzer named Bella, who is the alpha of the house, my mother woke me one summer morning to go to the Morgantown Animal Shelter to volunteer for the day. Needless to say, my father gave us a long lecture of how we were not to bring any more animals home. I remember as I walked through the doors of the animal shelter I glanced at the cages full of kittens. My mother whispered to me, “Do not even ask. Your dad said not to bring another animal home.” To my father’s surprise, that day after working at the shelter Buddy was adopted. Buddy…

It started off like everyday for every beagle working in the airport. A beagle’s life working in the airport is mainly using our acute sense of smell to sniff out any meats or plants that could possibly carry diseases or pests. I work in the Beagle Brigade at the Tay Airport. The Beagle Brigade is a team of beagles, and human handlers that search for prohibited agricultural products, and unauthorized meats. From what I’ve heard my owner says that without us our foods wouldn’t be safe, and there can be diseases that can be introduced in the U.S.To make it simple, without us humans wouldn’t be safe at all.…

No more click of his paws against the hardwood floor. Or the sound of his bellowing bark and pounding of his paws whenever someone rang the doorbell. Now whenever someone knocks on the door I wait, I wait for him to pounce toward the door and then I realize no, there won't be anymore of that, because he's gone. I can still remember the day it ended.…

My family dog is a hairless Chinese Crested named Sid. He is a gray, white, and black dog with no hair except on his head, paws, and the tip of his tail. We rescued Sid 8 years ago from Detroit, Michigan. His owners left him outside in the freezing cold when they moved away. They abandoned him. Adopting Sid changed my life forever. By caring for him, I have learned loyalty, responsibility, love, compassion, and patience. These are traits I see and feel within him as well. I believe animals mirror God’s hope and love for us. For example, God wants us to forgive others who have done us harm. Sid has forgiven his original owners by moving beyond the shy and fearful dog he was when we first brought him home. He is a happy and joyful dog now.…

More veterans are using service dogs to cope with challenges. Many soldiers, sailors, and marines find the transition from combat zones back to civilization to be challenging. The use of medication is not the only option, but the use of “man’s best friend” is living up to its name. Dogs build confidence in their military handlers through unconditional love.. Many people take medication to help them cope with their PTSD. “PTSD is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event” (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder 2016). PTSD sufferers can overcome stress and depression with the aid of a pet. Instead of taking medication that has harmful effects on the body and brain, they should get a prescription for a service dog.…

I have fostered many dogs, most have come from malicious breeders who were emptying cages to start new. The horrifying conditions these dogs were subject too are unacceptable. Breeders are people who keep animals in cages for most of their life to repopulate and breed certain species of dogs that are considered “superior” or “unattainably cute”. But the conditions many dogs are forced to live in are not worth the few adorable puppies that are adopted. This is why people need to rescue dogs from shelters, compared to buying them from breeders and puppy mills.…

I was never a dog lover. My kids always wanted a dog. I dug my heels in but eventually, they wore me down with chorus’ of “please can we get a dog?” Begrudgingly, I began looking for a dog. It was to be a Christmas present for my kids, an older dog, a trained dog. I knew that I did not have the patience for training and I knew that when kids say they will help; I knew exactly what that meant.…

It is a beautiful day in Sacramento, California and I am just getting lunch at “Mrs. Castillo’s home for Orphans” while I was eating string cheese and carrots with my best friend Elijah, my other friend Allie ran into the cafeteria and said “Hey! Samara! I have something for you, from Mrs. Castillo! After she was done sprinting, she handed me a note that said “Mrs. Castillo’s office, and I looked at the bottom and I saw something circled… and it said NOW!!! In all capitals. I knew that I did something wrong, I just knew it! I was so nervous I felt like I was going to throw up. Growing up on the outside of a small town, it was always hard to find kids to play with as a child. No children, besides my cousin, lived near me that I could go outside to play with and all of the friends I made in school lived further away which proved it difficult to make arrangements to get together. I suppose that is why I spent most of my time playing with my dog. Living on the outside of town had its drawbacks, but also contained hidden benefits that take time to come into the light. Spending the majority of my time playing with my dog has helped me come to the realization of my love for animals. This love and passion for animals is something that drove me to pursue a career in the field of animal science and to one day achieve my goal…

Memorized by the greenest pastures, the plethora variety of animals, and calming waters that make my heart soar for days. If I think about it now, Mother Nature is dying, because of us. We the people, destroy everything we touch. We think we make it better, but who are we really hurting? The answer is ourselves. Mother Nature’s beauty should be a promising feeling of life in our hearts. If we look back from today, there’s not much left to look back at.…
