James is always looking for adventure. As a 5 ft 5 in, 12-year-old boy, James thought he could handle anything. Living on the miniscule island of Takeshima, Japan, James could never go further than his 123,000 square foot island that was measured by himself. Every day, after his chores were done, James would fill his precious backpack with high-tech tools that were often used by professionals during the most perilous of adventures. Then he would walk out of his house and travel every square inch of the island to see that nothing had changed and that there were no secret passages to any new land. Every day James would face the disappointment of not having his own grand adventure. It was a sad life.
One day it all changed. James was saying his prayers and was then interrupted by a floating shadow-like human. “I see that you wish for the grandest adventure of your life. I can grant that.” At that exact moment the room flashed a color of bright red and James blacked out.
James awoke to see that he was still in front his home’s shrine. He looked around and saw that the room was covered in red

After many minutes, a large bulk that blocked out the horizon appeared. The ogre was roughly 50 feet tall and 20 feet wide. At the top of this massive ogre stood a horn that was easily 6 feet tall. There were scary monsters that looked like things that had been brought out of the players’ worst nightmares. There were strong monsters with 12 packs and bulging muscles. Every story needs a hero, right? For centuries authors and poets have included this essential character into their work. Without knowing literature has been seldom following the same archetype, The Hero’s Journey. Joseph Campbell discovered that most stories follow this pattern which is why he dubbed it the monomyth. Through years of studying he found that this popular motif is made up of ten basic steps that a hero follows through a story. Well known film writer and director George Lucas molded the film Star Wars around Campbell’s monomyth not only with intent but quite distinctively. Lucas is not the only one doing this in Hollywood either, many screenwriters and directors have caught on to this including Andrew Stanton as he depicted his version of the monomyth in Finding Nemo. This animated film follows the archetype laid out in Joseph Campbell’s, The Hero With a Thousand Faces.…

Western and nonwestern heroes come from different regions of the world; therefore, have different cultural backgrounds. More specifically, western heroes come from the Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian traditions. Nonwestern heroes come from other parts of the world that would not associate with these traditions. While these heroes might seem to have little in common when it comes to origin, “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell demonstrates that all heroes have “similar patterns” (Campbell). However by examining the non-western hero, Mulan, in “The Ballad of Mulan” demonstrates how this figure is different than the hero outlined in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in the following ways, Mulan does not have any kind of “supernatural aid”, “tests that lead to the final showdown”, or a “life-changing experience for her or many others” (Campbell).…

While we were leaving Independence, we tried to get into a section that moving, but there was so many wagons and people that we didn't know where to go. We were stuck there for at least 4 hours just sitting in our wagons waiting to find a chance to go. Finally after it all died down a little bit, we got into a line and started to move. We were traveling towards the Kansas river and we thought it would be easy to pass but since there were so many people, it took forever. We had to pay 1 dollar for every wagon that crossed so we ended up paying around 6 dollars to cross. This was one of the longest river crosses I think I will ever encounter. It took around 6 hours and once we were all on the other side, we had to go to sleep and wait to continue until the sun rises. A week later we got to Alcove…

We all face major hardships in our life, but I’ve met very few that have gone through as many as my grandma has. Being born into a world of war and terror is simply unimaginable, but my grandma had to go through it all. Never seeing what life is truly supposed to be like seems depressing, and not knowing when it will end seems even more. My grandma may argue that for her it wasn’t that bad because she didn’t know that life could be any better and was accustomed to living in a war, but from an outside point of view I will never really understand. At the end of the day, this strong woman pulled through and was able to find success. Looking back at her past, my grandma says that she is grateful for the opportunities she was given. My grandma had to go through all the phases of a hero’s journey including the departure, the initiation, and the return.…

When I was 17 it was 1995, I went on my first real date. We were going to see First Knight. The boy in question was the friend of a friend and I had only ever talked to him on the phone. He said he would pick me up at 7 and we would catch a movie. So far so good. 7 rolls around and he isn't there, he calls and says his Dad is running late so they won't be there till 8. I didn't realize his Dad was driving but whatever, I am withholding judgment. 8:30 they show up and he knocks on my door and I go out to join him. He leans in for a kiss and I lean very far back and awkwardly stick out my hand to shake his hand. He doesn't act like he knows what to do next and he is just staring at his feet and his Dad is staring at us and time just crawls. We finally just painfully walk to the car. It is not immediately apparent where we are going to be sitting. Now, this dude's Dad was HUGE. Not just his weight, but his entire freaking frame. He barely fits in his car. He has the driver's seat all the way back and in the front seat next to him is a cage of living breathing birds. The back seat is really only half a back seat because his Dad is filling so much of the car. I look at my date and look at the car. My date seems to have come to the same realization that there is really only one seat. I squeeze into the backseat while my date squeezes into the front seat with a bird…
