Personal Narrative: Decorating My Mask
I had such a great time decorating my mask in class this week! To be honest, I was a little terrified going into class that I wouldn’t be able to decorate my mask to my own expectations without spending a few hours on it, or that I would not be able to express the concept that I had created in my mind for my mask. As I worked on it, however, my worries faded away and I felt at ease because the activity in itself was so relaxing. After I gathered the paint, glitter, and feathers that I felt so inclined to grab (especially the glitter!), I sat down with all the materials and let them inspire me to make the first paint stroke. Once I began painting, the creativity just flowed from my soul and out through my hands to create a piece of art that, surprisingly, was able to somewhat resemble the concept I had in mind going into class. While I am not an artist by any means, I felt proud of my work! After we finished decorating our masks and went around the room sharing our creations, I was stunned to see all of the creativity exposed. And not only did the masks look beautiful, what each classmate was able to represent with their mask, using only the small amount of materials we had at our disposal, …show more content…
Daly (2005) even writes about the view some people have that nursing is more of an art than a science: “[they] support the idea of nursing as a caring and holistic art that sets itself in opposition to the rationality and reductive practices of scientific medicine and health care organization” (p. 60). While I believe there are aspects of both science and art in modern nursing, I feel it is important to understand that nurses do more than strictly medical tasks. Therefore, we should be prepared to get creative in every

Over the past semester, I can strongly say that I have grown immensely as an artist. I have been able to widen my range of skills as well as increase them overall. One of my best works, as well as one of my favorites is my Expressionist painting. Ih results in a nspired by one of my best friends, Eleanor, my painting displays a variety of Expressionist principles. Expressionism is based on the distortion of form and color, which often results in a wide array of expressed emotions. By creating colors that blended well and by using smooth brush strokes, I am able to create unity within my painting, which in my opinion makes it one of my successful works. Coming from a person who normally avoids painting and also…

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

I believe that nursing is both art and a science consisting of psychosocial and biological sciences that work together to continually improve the health care field. As a nurse it is crucial to carry the attributes of being caring, compassionate, understanding, nonjudgmental, realistic, open-minded, honest, ethical, and moral. I also feel that it is important to maintain sensitivity to all cultures when providing care. I believe it takes someone with a huge heart to do what nurses do. Some things you cannot be taught. If you are not a generous and caring person I cannot say I would think one would survive in the hands on medical field.…

I love big people, they can be so cute. I remember when I first arrived. The bright lights, the welcome committee, with their ear-to-ear smiles beneath their surgical masks — magical — however, I did think the slap on the butt was uncalled for, but bless their hearts, they get so emotional.…

Identity is who a person is. It determines how you act and how people think of you. For example, a person whose identity is bad is often bound for trouble and for others to look down on them, whereas a person with a good identity is often bound for success and treated well by others. A person’s identity can be affected by many things: where he/she was born, the person’s parents, friends and other things. Through my life experiences I have become creative, spirited, and inquisitive.…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…

Growing up with divorced parents from two radically different cultures was at first difficult. My mother’s family was from Peru, while my father’s was from Bangladesh. In my young mind, there was an internal struggle with what my identity actually consisted of. I wasn’t wholly from one culture or the other, and felt like a black sheep when interacting with either side of my family. Due to this, I attempted to keep these cultures partitioned. At the time, they were different portions of my life that simply couldn’t intermix. This mentality in turn led me to foolishly shy away from my joint heritage. I kept myself enclosed in a box, blind to the beauty of my surrounding culture. However, as time progressed, I knew I had to make a change in my understanding.…

Coloring the Mandala was a lot of fun! I work with kids and I color these all the time with them. I also use to color these a lot when I was a child. It felt very relaxing. It was almost as if I was meditating. I allowed myself to completely forget about anything else I had to do and to just focus on coloring the mandala.I put on some music and just began coloring. It was very easy to do. Coloring and painting is something I really enjoy doing so having to color a mandala was more fun than it was work. I did not feel like I had to force myself to complete it. This did not feel like an assignment. Many thoughts went through my head while I was coloring. I spent a lot of time debating on what colors to use. I decided to make it pretty bring and wanted it to really have a…

By delving into new media, I realized the process of creating art was just as therapeutic as the work itself. In printmaking, for example, I designed a silkscreen self-portrait which illustrated my mental disorder. The first print was the most emotionally difficult to make because I struggled confronting my disorder. However, the more copies I created, the more I could accept the face looking back at me. Because of this process, I could present the piece in my classroom critique. Additionally, my ceramic pieces each had a definite conceptual backbone, but working the clay with my hands promoted a sense of wellness and satisfaction that I had not yet achieved with another medium. The combined therapeutic capability of art itself and the process of making art are now tools of healing and self-expression that I can use as an artist and in my future…

I hide, but not in the shadows, I hide behind a mask. This is me about to divulge my story, so please read on reader. I believe that finding true freedom a person’s mask will fall off. I always told myself as a kid to keep the mask on or else I might get hurt. I do not really know where this type of thinking came from. The mask only came off when I was in the safety of my own room. For years, I stay behind my fake face waiting and watching the world in silence until the day I could take the mask off in public. I realize that taking off my mask was a risk, but it is worth seeing the world and not feeling the need to hide. That day finally came, when the sun is shinning on my back, the wind whipping through my hair and the mask fell off my face.…
