Personal Narrative: Breaking The Bar
As I slowly opened my eyes, all I saw was darkness. I try to feel my surroundings and all I touched were bars. I call out her name and all I heard back was mmm.

They came back after a few hours, I tried to scream, I tried to break the bars, pull them apart, nothing, nothing worked. I hid in fear at the corner of the cell, watching them enter the room, I hadn't realized where we were until they turned the lights on. I started screaming at them to let us go, or if not me to let her go, she is of no use to them.
There was no response, they ignored me, it was as if I wasn't even there. No matter how much I screamed and yelled at them, they didn't even glance at my direction, they kept moving away from me, towards something. That's when I realized,

As she started screaming, they started laughing, as if this was their main form of amusement. They kept laughing and pouring more and more water, on both feet. I couldn't bear to watch, I tried to close my eyes but I couldn't block out those screams. These were different screams from those you hear in horror movies, these were of pain, agony and fear.
I hated myself for being so helpless, I hated the men for treating her this way, but there was nothing I could do but watch.
The next day, they woke her up by throwing boiling hot water on her, then when she was awake, they started treating her like a punching bag, hitting her left and right, wherever they pleased.
The day after was even worse. They invited some sick friends over and stripped her down naked while she was tied. They forced her to stand in the corner of the room in plain view as they all made fun of her, throwing their cans of beer at her and occasionally some rocks. No matter how much I screamed, no matter how much I pleaded or begged, they never even responded to

I promised myself, if I ever got out, I would cut them into pieces while they are alive and force feed those parts to each other. I kept waiting for the day I could be of use, when they would make a mistake, drop the keys or open the door. It never came. I stopped counting the hours, the days I was there. It was hard to keep count in what seemed like a black hole where no light that entered could escape.
I had almost given up all hope, all I waited for was the day i would be put out of my misery. It hurt to look at her, her long brunette hair was nothing but pieces of short hay. Her body looked like meat that was barbequed for a party. Her perfect body now was nothing but a stick. It never stopped, every day, they found enjoyment from hurting her. They were worse than Hitler, at least he killed those he didn't like.
One day, they had another party. It was just like all the other ones where they made her strip down in front of them and took turn fucking her. They made her dance and kept on hitting her even when she did nothing wrong. This day though, I saw some light coming through a crack. I prayed to God, I asked him to get us out of here, l asked him to invent another level of hell for these

I sat in the corner, occasionally glancing up at the other faces. There was this one lady who looked like she was about to cry most likely because she was frightened, and there was this man who was shaking in fear. Seeing these faces just made the situation worse for me. I tightly squeezed my mom’s arm, hoping it would make me feel better…

In Miss America By Day, Marilyn Van Derbur told her story of incest, that she experienced throughout her childhood. She explained how she was sexually abused by her father, from age 5 to the time she was 18 years old, when she was able to leave her home and go off to college. Marilyn wrote about how her father would come into her room, at least once a week, to molest or rape her. The visits became more frequent when she was a teenager. She would lie awake in her bed, curled up in a tight fetal position, anticipating when he would come into her room and violate her. When he would come in at night, she would pretend she was sleeping throughout the whole defilement. The waiting was very traumatic for her on its own, because even if he didn’t come in a particular night, she still wouldn’t be able to go to sleep or relax her body from the fear of his next “visit.”…

It was five o’clock in the morning, still dark and freezing cold. Silence filled the air, the only sounds made were screeching screams and cries for help. The guards walk past every ten minutes to ensure no inmates have escaped or harmed themselves in any way. After being here at Goulburn Correctional Center for just over fifteen years now, I know every rabbit hole, emergency exit and surveillance areas around this place. The key to survival here is; don’t make friends with anyone, don’t look anyone in the eyes and don’t eat the food unless you have to. My first thought every morning when I wake up is my two beautiful twins, James and Vanessa. The last time I saw them was 2002. Even though they were young when I was convicted, they have grown…

I remember she had started off in Spanish, words slowly becoming faster and slightly louder, still only meant for the man by her side, then she allowed four words ring out in loud, clear English “This needs to stop.” I remember thinking the exact thing at that moment. I remember that at that point I was already losing the battle to oncoming tears. I remember officially losing the battle when I saw that the American flag had the names of all of the killed victims written on the stripes. I remember trying to wipe the tears away with the back of my hand, and not letting noise escape my mouth. I remember how slowly I walked, not because I wanted to, but because I physically couldn't walk at my normal speed. I remember seeing a pony and my mum making a comment on it, and while she laughed I tried not to, knowing that I wouldn't be able to control the tears if I did. I remember seeing two mothers with young children walk up next to me. I remember thinking about nothing, my mind blank for seemingly the first time in my life. I remember trying to stand tall, and look like a good role model for the toddlers a mere three feet…
