Personal Narrative: A Letter To My Mentor
This is a letter to someone that I am proud to call my mentor. My definition of a mentor is someone you can look up to and try to emulate regardless of the topic. GySgt Alberson is the Marine I have choosen to write about because he leads by example. This Marine though our incounters have been few always left me with new ideas or words to live by.
On day back in 2005 the communication’s platoon decided to play ultimate fresibe for fun and leave the invitation open for anyone who wanted to play. Only a few Marines showed, so we split teams and began to play. Every Marine to include myself was noticeable not giving 100% because it was just a game to us. As the other team had just scored and we were walking back to the end zone, this SSgt whom I had never meet comes

I thought about those words all night as they played over and over in my head. I didn’t understand how something so simple as not running back to the start point could make the SSgt get alittle angry at me. It later dawned on me that it didn’t matter what you do, you always give maxium effort. Those words have stuck with me every since. We had very few encounters after that do to work cycles and deployments. However the our last encounter is one I will always remember. After a 160 SOAR training meeting myself and GySgt Alberson got into a conversation about the way 1st MSOB work up cycles go. As a communicator I was telling him how easy it is using some of the new communications equipment and that we hardly ever use the recon communicators “bread and butter” High Frequency (HF). He began explaining to me how important it

My mistake was going outside without shoes, now I wear my shoes all the time.…

    2. SSgt Arnold is a self-starter that made an immediate impact on the leadership and performance of the company. He was easily the top sergeant and was routinely given tasks normally reserved for SNCOs. Marines under his charge were always well organized and highly motivated directly due to his efforts. One specific noteworthy achievement was his intervention and direct actions when faced with an attempted suicide. He fearlessly stepped into the point of friction, correctly and swiftly took action without guidance and limited information on the situation. His actions and maturity were responsible for safe guarding a life of a fellow Marine. In addition, then Sgt Arnold masterfully performed as a Section Head/Area Supervisor for the Henoko Ammunition Supply Point. In this capacity, he was responsible for 22 ammunition magazines with 2500 line items of explosive materiel valued at roughly $90 million dollars. During his time in the storage section the inventory accuracy rating was a stellar 98.3% well above the DoD requirement of 95%.…

During MSG Vargas’ time as 1SG, she had many achievements. Her most significant achievement was fostering a strong working relationship between the AIT instructors and AIT platoon sergeants. When she took charge, the relationship was hostile and not advantageous to the Soldiers in our charge. Within three months, the relationship between the schoolhouse and platoon sergeants was seamless, fluid, and supported the Soldiers with near perfect efficiency. Additionally, she ensure that all Soldiers in her charge complied with the Army Body Composition Program. She discharged three NCO’s that were failing to progress on the program, making a strong statement to the young Soldier’s that compliance was a…

Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come” (Schuller, 2017). I was a young and eager Soldier who always wanted to strive to be the best I could be, unless it was running. It did not help that where we were stationed at was Germany where beer and an abundance of food was available. CSM Bailey had a knack to help motivate me while conducted our runs during the week. One instance that comes into mind was during one of our long runs where we would run up two or three of the major hills in our small garrison. CSM Bailey decided to run up the first hill with our section talking to me about World of Warcraft an online game that we both enjoyed playing. At the time, I did not know why he decided to talk to me about that during our runs but later found out that it was to keep my mind off the actual run. CSM Bailey was always being patient with me during the runs while explaining to me, that one day when I lead Soldiers that I would have to do the…

The history of our beloved Marine Corps is a rich and renowned one full of our traditions. Webster defines tradition as “a way of thinking, behaving, or doing something that has been used by the people in a particular group, family, society, etc., for a long time”. Used by a group or society but above all a family, in many way, that is exactly what the Marines are it is not a job, not a corporation but a family steeped in our traditions. These traditions have many important aspects none more so than honor, courage and commitment. Honor, the back bone of every Marine, it is shown through our actions and is why Marines have such high integrity. Our courage is shown in whites out teeth, bared in the face of death and danger. Last but never least…

Staff Sergeant Barbara knew how to take a disorganized warehouse and make it run like a well-oiled machine. When he transferred from the East Coast to California our Special Events warehouse was a disorganized mess at best. I was fairly new to this warehouse and had a couple other senior Marines that were running it when I arrived. When Staff Sergeant Barbara arrived on deck, he and I were literal taking a sledge hammer to the walls in the first week. We were…

during May 2007 that all Devil Dogs would read the book FtF and discuss its importance and what it means to them.3 During September 2009, General Conway published another ALMAR that supported his Commanders who recommended retaining FtF as the CMC’s choice.4 Is this book really that good?! LtGen Krulak retired from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in 1968 surrounded by much controversy; he was promised by both the Secretary of the Navy and Defense that he was going to be the next CMC and President Johnson surprised everyone by selecting somebody else.5 He finished/published FtF in 1984; the title comes from recruiting slogans of World War I (WWI) and has been preached at USMC boot camps and Officer Candidates School since at least 1984.6 Although history would prove that the USMC is usually the first into a conflict, the book is not a complete history of the USMC. In a book that is 270 pages long, well over half of the book is written about events that took place primarily between 1934-1968, the years that he was on active duty. Surprisingly, he mentions nothing about the USMC’s role in America leaving Vietnam in 1975 and dedicates less than a sentence to the tragedy of the Beirut bombing attack of 23 October 1983. So why did LtGen Krulak write this entertaining, easy to read book? LtGen Krulak wrote FtF as a means to show both the American public and future Marines why the USMC is such a special and unique institution. When General Conway first made FtF mandatory reading, he stated, “This book…
