Personal Narrative: A Letter To Join A Cross Country
Mr. Basich,

I wanted to thank you for being my coach. I started off last year, having never run before, and not knowing what to expect. I am so glad that I decided to join cross country. Joining the team was one of the best choices that I have ever made. I met so many new people, that are now my friends, and some even like family. I also learned how to push myself like I never had before.

Before I joined cross country I was not competitive. As soon as I ran my first race at War On The Shore I realized that I needed to be competitive and not so “nice”. As the season progressed during my first year I began to get some fire in me, and started to get much more competitive.

You always pushed me to try my hardest. You helped me when I needed help. I wanted to run a lot faster this year, but I ended up getting shin splints. I did not always receive the results that I wanted, due to having shin splints, but I continued running, because I love running. Even though I had shin splints, the last race I ran, was one of the fastest times I’ve ever ran! I’m excited to run faster next year with no more injuries!

You were always there to help me. You helped me when I had shin splints, and you helped me to become more competitive, and want to do

Thank you for everything you have ever taught me and talked to me about. You inspired me to push myself, to a point that I never would have thought that I could. Cross country has truly been (and will continue to be) some of the best years of my life. Cross country is a great experience to learn many leadership skills, learn how to push yourself to a point you didn't know you could, and meet many new people from all different grades. Thank you for being our coach and for always teaching me new things and making me want to do better. I know that you are going to move on to do amazing things. Good luck, and thank you for everything you have

First of all, you were probably the funniest/most entertaining teacher I have ever had throughout my elementary and secondary education. I thoroughly enjoyed coming to your class. You made learning lots of fun. Your students became apart of your lectures so many times it was like we was living the history you were teaching. You have a lot of passion for your job, teaching us and personally made me want to give the same amount of effort…

In 2008, I was a eight year old and, regrettably, a member of the Saint Joseph Cross Country team. I consistently finished in the last five runners, and despised every moment that I spent training for the race season. Even though I began running cross country in elementary school, I was never a natural. After years, I was allowed to quit. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I had forgotten my hatred of running. After much enticement from my mother - a runner herself - I joined Bowling Green High School’s Cross Country team. Halfway through the first practice, I remembered every reason why I had quit the sport years earlier. Regardless of how much I begged my mom, she insisted that I finish the season. I was stuck with two choices:…

During the last track season, he placed me in a long distance race that I didn’t think I could do. I tried to talk him out of putting me into it, but he wouldn’t budge. When it came time for the race, I could see that he believed in me even though I didn’t believe in myself. In the end, I did better in the race that I thought I would. I was very thankful for Coach’s encouragement and support. He also has been a coach for many years and will continue being a coach. He loves his job as a coach and a teacher and is very good at it.…

You truly have a beautiful soul. Everything I learn from you I will keep with me wherever I go, and I want you to know that you have really changed my life. I hope that I can end up being a fraction as amazing and brilliant as you are. You are completely unselfish; everything you do benefits others. All you ever want to do is help people. I am positive that every teen you have known in PFO has been impacted by you in a huge way. You are the perfect role model and if any of you has rubbed off on me I would feel blessed. This year has been no different to any other in my life, you have always been there supporting me and guiding me but this year I have realized how much of a difference you make in my life and I thank you. As we said at the small…

First off, I'd like to say it's an honor for me to be around such great football players from the past and present. Knowing that I am now part of college football history is something that is hard to put into words. This has always been a dream of mine to join the Heisman fraternity, whose names include Roger Staubach, Archie Griffin, Earl Campbell, Marcus Allen, Barry Sanders...the list goes on and on. It truly is an honor to be accepted with open arms from all these past greats. I'd like to thank the Heisman Committe as I accept this award on behalf of my teammates. I hope you guys have a sense of accomplishment, because this is just as much you as it is me. This is an award I couldn't have received with out you guys. I know this is meant to be an individual award; however, in this case, this truly is a team award. I'd like to thank all my coaches on the staff at the university. Thank you for giving me a chance to play for you and teaching me not only about football, but life experiences as well. I'd like to thank my high school coaches as well. Thank you for installing discipline in me and a toughness to keep going and never give up. I'd also like to thank my family. I don't know where I would be or what I would do in life without you guys. You've guided me the right direction throughout my life through the good and the bad. You have raised me to be the man I am today. My dad, who taught me about work ethic everyday growing up. My mom, who installed in me so many great characteristics such as confidence, leadership, and discipline. My two brothers, Steve, and Joe, you guys are great role models who I look up to. All of our fans out there watching at home, thank you so much for all your support. You're one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. English and writing played a part, but the way you taught and related to kids on their level was pretty awesome to watch. I thought it was funny how you'd go off subject at a moment's notice and I remember you even bringing up two of my favorite subjects in class - Punk Rock and graffiti. I was especially impressed by your broad-mindedness and unrelenting support for the underdog.…

Gallons of sweat trickled down my face while I seamlessly ran up and down the track. At times, I didn’t think I would get through it. It was an everyday struggle to continue my journey down the path of success. At practice, we would relentlessly run and run and run until our breathing neared nonexistent. I, for one, could barely keep up, but the fight inside of me did not die out. My coach would tell us that our meet was nearing and our will to win kept pushing everyone harder. We ran three to four miles a day with little to no breaks. He would yell motivational phrases to push us, but in all honesty, we just wanted to get back in our beds and sleep the day off. Although this is true, It became important to me to work to better myself and though…

Two days. Two days was how long the break between training for track, and training for cross country started. As a team our goal was to have the top 12 guys run 500 miles each, which at the time seemed to be an unreasonable goal. However Coach Hampton was confident that this was a reachable goal and encouraged not only the top 12 guys, but the the JV guys as well, to join in and train with the top 12.This was the summer of 2016, I had just had track state and made it to finals for the 4x8 only to get my relay disqualified because I cut into the inside lanes of the track before the cut off line. This had been our goal all season, make it to state, get to finals, and see what happens. Causing my relay to get disqualified is one my worst moments…

We got together and told us that even though we did not place as we would have liked to, we still accomplished so much that year. We ran as a team and had good showings at meets throughout the whole year. He told us that it is silly to say a season is a failure because of one bad race, because we had come so far from the beginning of the season. We grew as a team and had fun doing it, and that is something that we he told us to be proud of because not all high school teams could say that. Coach Ernst always knew the right thing to say to me to cheer me up and get me fired up and pushed me to my best. He also challenged me to think differently and be proud of my accomplishments even though they may not be what I expected them to…

Twenty years ago she came into my life and because of her I am a better person. If not for her I never would have been so dedicated and excited to play sports. Thanks to Aim my life revolved around sports and this allowed me to release my frustrations and be a part of team. She once said to me “Teddy your team is an extension of your family and family is all any of us have.” She was the best member any family could ever have and I am honored to call her my aunt. Before she officially became my aunt she was my mentor, my coach and my biggest fan. From her I learned to take pride in my actions, to do my best and to never take people for granted. One time she took me to one of our many wrestling meets and I had to wrestle a girl. I was 13 years old and had been raised to never hurt a female. The girl beat me by points because I couldn’t go all out and I was extremely embarrassed. She consoled me and assured me that it was just a fluke. Then later that day I had to face the…

With the Cross-Country team, I feel like an insider. An experience that best exemplifies this feeling is from a practice during my freshman year. I was a slow runner, running in a pair of poor quality shoes and the fastest kid on the team came up to me and told me that I needed new shoes and that he would help me purchase them. As a scared freshman on my first runs, I needed something of this nature, a confidence booster. It showed me that the community surrounding me was not only caring, but also welcoming. However, as the season went on, I realized that random acts of kindness and friendship were not out of the ordinary, but the norm. I found myself running with people who could have run with a faster group, yet ran with me. Cross-country…

Put me on the start line. I have trained for this race all season and this is where I need to put all of that training into this race and run the best I have ever ran. The officials are letting us know basic rules that we have all heard about a million times, but all I can think about is the race. My legs shaking, freezing because of how cold it is, but all that is on my mind is this moment; this race that is one of the last times I will be running competitively in high school. The next 30 minutes is about to be full of struggle, grit, and mental and physical fatigue.…
