Personal Narrative: A Day At Holly Lake
Holly Lake

I was so excited to go and have so much fun at Holly Lake. One day in June we went to Holly Lake we decided to go to the lake during the morning. Me, my Mom, Dad, Maddie, Matt, Tammy, Maddie’s Grandparents. We all went down to the lake. I jumped in the water I was scared I thought I was going to die. “I hate fish!” I shouted. Everyone asked me, “then why are you swimming in a lake?” I said, “because i like swimming.”

I started swimming, I told everyone that I was scared of wild, scary fish, so maddie’s grandpa asked “ you are, ok?” So Maddie’s Grandpa bit me like a fish with his hand. I jumped onto my mom’s float. I flipped her over and she lost her glasses and she spilled her drink. I was so scared, everyone started laughing.

I have always loved going to the lake, but this time was a little bit different, we had a boat. It wasn’t a very big boat, but it was big enough to put a smile on my face. Not only did we have a boat, but we had a tube as well. Every other year I was told I wasn’t allowed to go in the tube; but after repetitive asking to ride in it my Dad finally said yes.…

After breakfast, the parents went out on the lake to have “adult time.” So my cousins and I decided to go riding back in the woods. Chelsea and I were doing wheelies on the four-wheelers. Wheelies are so fun; I get the feeling of butterflies in my stomach every time I do them. Jessica was riding her four-wheeler backwards. Johnathan was doing tricks on his dirt bike. We were doing all kinds of tricks and cool things. We even had races to see who could go the fastest. Then we found a spot in the dirt that was really wet. We saw that is was safe, so we started playing around in it. We did what most people call “mudding.” We all had a blast until Johnathan flooded his engine, and Chelsea started complaining about having mud all over her. So they decided to go home and let Jessica and I keep riding.…

I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

Everyone has their own community or organization for which they belong to. Within that community you tend to find who you are and what you are about. For me I found my identity in being an outdoors man. Being an outdoors man at my young age seems to be rare at this day, but that doesn’t prevent me from doing something I love and appreciate. Growing up with my family full of avid outdoors men helped influence me and only made my identity stronger.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

On the way, we saw a black and white cat racing across the street chasing a gray mouse. We played a game called I Spy and sang songs to pass the time. Growing closer to the beach Michael spied a snake lying in the road, and asked, "Why is the snake lying in the middle of the road mommy?" The snake was dead and not wanting to upset him, I replied, "The snake is basking in the sun so it can get warm".…

Thanksgiving had come, and it was Karsten's first! He was just starting to roll over. Not long after, the most TRAGIC thing that has ever happened in my life happened. On November 31, 2004, my sister, Haley and I got off the bus at the Bank. We raced each other inside so excited to see everyone, and everyone had a terrified look on their faces, like they weren't excited to see us the way they normally are. Haley and I just kind of looked at each other. My mom was nowhere to be found. We had no idea what was going on. Finally, Lorie Spaulding came running to us and asked, "What are you all doing here?! Both of you was supposed to go to Tonya's (My Aunt)." Haley replied, "But mom told us to get off here. No one at school had told us any different. "Well, come on and I'll have to take you girls home." insisted Lorie.…
