How do you like to express yourself? Well I use dance as a way to express myself and my feelings, It's like another language to me, using movement and facial expressions the body says what words cannot.

In my future I would like to go into the creative industries because performing and dancing is my passion, I love doing it and I would love to be able to wake up every day to do something I love rather than waking up to an alarm and going to a job I hate and am not passionate about. The creative industry isn't just dancing and performing It's also people like artist, technicians and people in design and fashion.

Ever since I can remember I've been dancing whether it's been in dance class or dancing for my family at home, I love it, I love

In 2000 Misty joined the American Ballet Theater studio company, Then in 2007 she became one of the youngest American Ballet Theater dancers to be promoted to a soloist and on June 30th 2015 Misty Copeland became the first african american female principal dancer in the american ballet theatre's 75 year history.

Misty is my inspiration and I know that being a professional dancer would be a lot of hard work and a lot of long hours but I don't think of dancing as a job, because when I think of a job I think of working long hours and paperwork and things like that, dance to me is my passion not my job but in the future I would like to pursue a career in dance and make it my job.

I'm going to leave you with this quote from Misty:
“I never was told, ‘You can be anything,’“I never was told,
‘You’re great at this, or even if you’re not great at this we have the funds to support you.’ I never had any of that. There’s something psychologically that stops you from believing that you

Misty began dancing at age 13, too late by many industry standards to attain professional success. This late start was seen as a disadvantage of experience, and, given the cut throat, highly competitive world of dance, she was continuously discredited by instructors and dancers alike. However, becoming a principal dancer, she recognized, required not only skill but also incredible emotional stamina. For every successful principal dancer, she noticed, there were many more in her place who simply “burned out”- unable to sustain the grueling eight hour per day six days per week regimen of toe-crushing exercise. The focus of the short story “Dancer” by Vickie Sears is the positive progression of the main character, Clarissa, a foster child who gains a sense of her cultural identity as a Native. In the beginning of the story, she is introduced as a child with next to nothing and is portrayed to have psychopathic traits. Towards the end of the story, there are positive changes in her character. The main factor that led to Clarissa’s progression was her developing a strong interest in the powwow that led her to gain a sense of being a part of a family, knowledge about the community, and a better understanding of her history and culture.…

Ballet companies are known as typically being composed of white dancers; however, Copeland has sparked the conversation of the lack of diversity in many ballet companies. Misty Copeland notes that when she joined the American Ballet Theatre she “was the only black woman in a company of 80 dancers”(Ellis 89). When Copeland was promoted to a soloist, the New York Times even took note publishing an article titled “Where Are All the Black Swans?”. When Misty was promoted to the first black female principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, some people thought it “would be wrong for ABT to give me such a promotion merely to appear more racially diverse and inclusive”(Copeland 251). Although some people will always believe Copeland was promoted at the American Ballet Theatre after coming under fire for the lack of diversity, it does not change the fact that the news of her promotion broke out of the exclusive ballet world. The news of her promotion was not only in dance magazines, but in newspapers and on television. Copeland broke the “ballet blanc” standards and opened the world of ballet up to a new audience who would have continued blissfully unaware of the classical ballet…

“I want to be a ballerina princess”. You see, the difference between a regular princess and a ballerina princess is the elegance. Ballerinas held an elegance and ferocity during performances that were sensational. On the other hand, Disney princesses always had their happy endings and by combining both, my goal was set. Soon enough, ballet performances and Disney movies about princesses clouded my practicality with absurd idealism.…

For as long as I can remember, Irish Dance has been my entire world. At just two years old, my mom tied my shoes, getting my triplet sisters and I ready for practice. With my aunt being the teacher, I grew up in my dance studio, making it feel like it was my home since I was there most of the time. When I would walk through the front door, the lime green walls would reflect onto my clothes and I knew I was meant to be there. The loud music would ring in my ears, and I would get ready to work hard. I could feel the vibrations under my feet and could feel the…

The body is intricately made and can do amazing things. Dancers tap into the muscles of their body that many people do not know exist, much like athletes. A dancer trains hard, spends hours in the studio, is always looking to improve their skills, and engages in competition. The same can be said about football, basketball, and baseball players. People assume that dance is not as challenging or aggressive on the body as other sports. But I, as a dancer, can validate that it is just as hard and uses large groups of muscles to complete certain steps, or moves. Dance has potential to be classified as a sport by society, when all evidence and support is considered.…
