My Personal Narrative Growing up in Kokomo, Indiana there wasn’t much to the daily life in my hometown. I’d like to believe this is me telling the story of how through hard work and perseverance I could achieve my goal in high school. A goal that many told me was unachievable and stupid to pursue. What is this goal you wonder? My goal was to play Basketball at Kokomo High School. Heck Michael Jordan got cut in high school only to become the biggest star in NBA history, so this is bound to be one of those success stories. Nope, this isn’t the story with the happy ending but my story is something like the alternate ending you get when you buy a movie on DVD. Three of my four years while enrolled at Kokomo I tried out for the team only to be cut each time. Freshman year I came to Kokomo from one of four local middle schools where I had played basketball and was deemed the best player at my school (this isn’t much to brag about as my team won once in three years). So fifteen year old me who had been playing basketball in local leagues and school for about seven years had found something I truly loved and had passion for. This however would turn around to cause the biggest heartbreak in my life. Three days of tryouts as I remember for our freshman team featured all the best players from the four middle schools in Kokomo. Some I had been playing with for years and some who now in college are having great freshman seasons at their respective colleges. Day two of tryouts end and the list of people to stay for day three is posted. I had just played two straight days of solid basketball but I thought the one thing that pushed me over was the hustle and respect I showed the coaches. I walked to the list with one of my best friends at the time and scanned for our last names only to find myself excluded from the third day of tryouts and so devastated that I began to cry on the spot. The sheer embarrassment forced me

I have always strived for my best in everything I do. I never accept failure; however during my sophomore year of high school, I was put through a difficult challenge. I have always dreamt of becoming an athletic student but I have always never gotten a chance because of my discouragement that I would not make the team. In my sophomore year, I decided to try out for the tennis team. I was confident of my status as the new athlete in the Dominion High School tennis team. After the week long try outs, I was given the disappointing news that I had not made the team. I was very disappointed but that did not stop me from continuing to work hard and work on my mistakes. Throughout the summer, I practiced with former Dominion High School tennis players…

I was always interested in basketball, but I never knew the proper rules for it. That didn’t stop me though. I practiced everyday and I would learn the rules for basketball. Eventually I came to a conclusion that I was going to try out for AAU basketball. I was having doubts in my mind about trying out though, because I was scared I wasn’t talented enough. So I had to practice a lot before the tryout till I was satisfied with my skills and what not. The tryout wasn’t extremely hard but it was tiring. The only way I knew I could make the team is if I keep up with the players. It wasn’t too hard and I just had to prove individually that I was capable of playing with this team. At the end of the…

There was a general interest meeting for anyone who wanted to play on the school team. I was confident I could return to my geeky ways if there were no other beginners on the team. As I nervously walked into the gym, it seemed like every kid on the court was born with a basketball in his hand. I stood on the sideline and tried to look somewhat coordinated by bouncing an occasional dribble. I watched in awe as kids came up the court and effortlessly hit shot after shot. They could drive to the hoop with ease and made me feel like I was born with two left feet with their fancy dribble moves. The coach walked out of his office and announced to the group that basketball tryouts would be in November. It was already September, and it would take a miracle worker to bring me to the skill level I needed to make the team. I was short and had never touched a basketball in my life. What was I doing here? The mountain I anticipated was in reality Mt. Everest. I could never see myself in a million years having what it takes to be good at basketball. But I kept hearing soft whispers inside my mind to just try it. Maybe it was because it was a new school year and a new beginning. Maybe it was because I had friends who lived and breathed basketball. Whatever the reason, I signed up for…

I joined MYB in 5th grade. I wanted more of a competition league after coming from Upward basketball. The first year my team was horrible and everyone went their separate ways after the season. I joined Dave Buffenbarger’s team the following year hoping for a better outcome. A lot of the girls on that team were some of my close friends, and some were not. This was not a problem as we quickly became close. MYB gave me the chance to make new friends through their league and become even closer with my old friends. With a few players always coming and going after each season, I ended up playing for Dave up until my senior year. Being on Dave’s team for so long gave me the chance to grow close to my teammates. Being with my team for many years and…

I was fourteen years old just starting my new chapter of life at Hamilton High School. I did not really know what to expect from high school but the year started great. I was having fun in my classes and made some great friends. However, I was nervous about the Varsity Golf team tryout. I played golf for about a year leading up to the tryout not knowing what to expect. I felt like I had a really great chance of making the team and join a varsity team at Hamilton.…

I made the team my junior year. Although I did not start the first games because the coach would put some of his favorite players in but one game he put me in second half and no one would get pass me. I was taking all the all the balls away from the opponents and also winning them in the air. After that game I became the starter for every game. It felt good because there were only seven juniors on the team and I was one out of three juniors that started every game. But I was really clad for myself because all the hard work I did over the summer paid off. We were in a tournament and were playing to go to the finals. We won 7 -1. I scored my first goal in that game. When I thought everything was going good one of the opponent player slide and hit me in the knee with his cleats and I just fell and I could not walk because it was the worst pain in the…

It all started when I was in 8th grade, preparing for my first basketball tryouts. I was confident in myself that making the team would be a walk in the park. The next day at school, after the tryouts were over, I was told by a friend that I, unfortunately, was not accepted. At this point, I wanted to do two things, such as: cry or be depressed about the outcomes. This was a difficult time in my life, because it was the first time I was rejected due to lack of skill. I couldn’t be myself for quite a long time, considering how this obstacle was constantly playing with my emotions. Nevertheless, my older brother eventually took me to after school basketball practices. It was here, where I regained my strength, and was taught that if a person…

I even travelled with the team to an away game at The University of Illinois. My senior season started out great, and I was really at the top of my game. I broke another school record, and was named Mid-Illini player of the week the first three weeks of the season. Even with all of these new awards, Coach P, Michigan State’s coach, reminded me that I needed to stay healthy in order to fulfill my obligations of my verbal contract. Her voice was in the back of my mind one practice late in the season my senior year. Due to an injury, the varsity team was looking for a couple of players to move up to the team and finish out the season. So, the JV coach thought it would be a good idea for the JV and varsity teams to scrimmage. The varsity team was not taking the game too seriously, but the JV girls were playing like it was the state championships. While playing defense, I stole the ball from the JV’s all-star point guard who was looking to fill one of the varsity available spots. She got frustrated, and sprinted after me as I went down court for the easy lay-up. The player stepped in too close and with a lot of force ran into me while I was in mid-air for the easy…

    Basketball Team Failure

After 3 strenuous days of basketball tryouts at West middle school, tensions rose dramatically as the group of middle school student athletes I was a part of competed belligerently for the disproportionate amount of 13 available spots. With over 150 kids participating, it was inevitable there would be an ample amount of heartbreak in the gym. As Coach Fonseca called the group over to center court, you could not help but feel the tension in the entire gym, every kid’s eyes filled with anxiety as each drop of sweat slowly trickled down from their bodies. As coach read down the list, I realized my chances were diminishing. Soon the list was complete and I, along with many other students headed out the gym, heads down.…

Trying out for a school team does not sound like something that could cause much trouble. Well, in seventh grade I was terrified. I had heard different things about the coach, Mrs. Tavel, and how she could be pushy sometimes. She was known for always saying, “Don’t be sorry, be good,” and I just asked myself what I had gotten in to, not to mention I am not the most confident person. On the other hand, I did prepare myself as much as possible for the tryouts, slaving away countless hours in my backyard, setting the ball to myself. Well as I got to tryouts I realized everyone else was already lined up and had their numbers on. This was the moment that I wanted to run out screaming. Despite this, I walked up and got my number. I went to the first station of the tryouts, which was serving. I made every single one over the net, which was a huge accomplishment for a seventh grader! From here on out I was on fire. I had made all the proper preparations to make the team, and I was proud of myself.…

There must be around thirty some seventh grades who had tried out to make the squad of fifteen that would make the team. I actually felt that I had a good chance of making the team. I was one of the taller boys trying out and felt I had a well enough understanding of the game. The tryouts themselves lasted for two nights, and each night of tryouts lasted a grueling two hours of running sprints, shooting drills, lay-up drills, and full court games. Overall my performance was not as good as I would have liked. I did very well with the lay-up drill. I was well trained using the correct technique, which is to…

BRAINSTORMING: The first speech I will be presenting is a Descriptive/Narrative speech. My top two topics for this speech is two different experiences that have made an impact in my life. The first experience that comes to mind is when I was 15 years old and helped my oldest sister raise her one year old because she had developed a condition that was life threatening to her and her unborn child during her second pregnancy. The second experience that comes to mind is when I was 16 and dislocated my knee and had to have extensive knee surgery and physical therapy for over a year.…

My life was over. As my mother tried to console me she said I should look at other teams, but there were no other teams for me. I did not play any basketball at all in the summer going into my freshman year of high school. However I did decide to tryout for my school’s basketball team. I went into tryouts pretty confident, but after the first three days, when I had not been called to play on the varsity court, my confidence was at an all time low. I made the team, but not varsity and there were those same words echoing,”try again”. After those events, I had finally come to terms with the fact that college basketball was not an option for me. How could I play college basketball if that was my attitude when I failed? Is that how I would react if I were benched by a coach? I thought about these questions for a long time and came to my final decision about playing in college. When I got that email from Oshkosh Elite I should have been enraged and steam should have been blowing out from my nose and ears, and I should have got on a team and started working on my game like they said. Instead, I took the summer off and sat on the couch, moping about how I did not make the…

The next year, I tried out for the 8th grade school basketball team. I made the team. And actually made the team this time. I would get to play and everything. I was ecstatic… until a week later when I ended up on crutches for injuring my growth plate in my ankle. By this point, it just seemed as if the world didn't want me to play basketball. Luckily it healed alright and I got to play after a month or…

“Life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.” – Charles Swindoll. My high school years were the best. My freshman year I did very well in school. I made good grades and I played sports. My favorite sport was always volleyball. I’ve always dreamed of playing volleyball since I was in elementary school. We did well that season but did not make the play – offs. We were sad, but our coach told us to cheer up and that there always was next year. That same year I met a good friend named Mia.…
