Western Spiritual Paths
9.6.13
For those of you who don't know me, my name is ------ ------. I am a sophomore at R University this year and I am loving every minute of my college experience. I still can't nail down a major because I want to do a little bit of everything, and by a little bit I mean that I want to be superhuman and do everything. I am torn between Politics, Sociology, Spanish, Communications, and making my own International Relations major just for fun. I don't know where I am and I don't know where I am going. My life has always been this way, one extremity in every open door but trying to be present in all of the different places. I have moved around a few times to states that are very different from one another. I have travelled over a large part of the globe, I'm hoping to check off every country by the time I die but the realist side of me knows that I will never quite fulfill that goal. I can't sit still and I love seeing everything that I possibly can, whether this is a place or a side of an argument, I love every aspect of education and educating oneself. There has been a lot of pain in my life and for a period of about two years I was severely depressed and did or had experienced many things that I wish I never had to go through but am now glad for because of the experience that they gave me. I have had my heart broken and my dreams crushed, I have been lost and been found again, I have had a struggle with a faith that I now identify myself with, but hey, go big or go home. I believe in feeling with your whole heart and examining life through the lens of living it, I respect people who stand up for themselves and are not ashamed to speak up, and I absolutely live for stories. Any story. Whether they be a life story or a fictitious piece, I don't care how it is told so long as it is shared and available for people to see. Stories are the best kind of education. One very important thing that you

As for a lot of people, many of them have some type of story to tell. Some people aren’t okay with telling their story but others are okay with it. As for Jeannette Walls when writing her book The Glass Castle, she was very open about her story. With her story, many people noticed that the way she was raised and brought up wasn’t a normal way to be raised. She went through a lot and not many people realized the struggles she had. Just like everyone else, she had struggles and she overcame them to make a better life for herself. Between her story and mine, there wasn’t a lot of comparison, but the thing that did match up was the ‘Struggle’ that she went through. In my story, friends of mine were struggling and they wanted an easy way out. But…

    Radford: A Short Story

I feel as though I can get the very best that I need. The campus isn’t too big, the student to teacher ratio is wonderful, and the theatre is gorgeous. I want to consider Radford a piece of my life, a really good piece. It took me a while to figure out my major, at first I was set on being a theatre major, then I switched to journalism, and finally somewhere along the line I found myself in Criminal Justice (possibly double-majoring in Psychology!) Throughout all the things I’ve been through, I always take my time to help others. I never put myself first, which may or may not be the best thing to do, but that is who I am. I want to someday be a part of the BAU in the FBI. I love studying people and knowing what their next move will be. I want to be a hero, a big part of something. I want to use the voice I was given too, don’t get me wrong. I enjoy acting, singing, playing piano and guitar on my free time. I also seem to lose myself in writing in various forms throughout the day. I feel as if I am a good fit for Radford. I’m a people person, I enjoy making others smile and talking to others learning about them. I want to get to know a lot of people, and make a lot of life-long…

I found dreams I never knew I would want to accomplish so desperately, which is another reason I started taking college classes my senior year through a running start program. I have found myself valuing all of my work and dedication much more, because being independent has definitely been a beautiful episode that forced me to be an adult. I see myself going to a four-year school and find a job where i can operate with kids and people facing struggles. I love sociology and have always thought of myself working to help others. I have started a new passion towards history and society change over time which has made me strongly perplexed about a career choice. Due to my indecisiveness, I continue to take as many classes as I can, to clarify my decisions, and hope to find a perfect career for…

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…

    Patient Narratives

    • 1708 Words
    • 5 Pages

"Narratives" or stories have been used throughout the history of the human race to allow and help people to express themselves in ways that promote personal growth and enhance physical well-being. Even in the simplest of contexts, narratives are a core factor in the advancement of the humanity/society and all of its facets. An illustration of this can be seen in the transfer of a family 's lineage, history, and values from generation to generation. This allows for the recipient of this information to have a greater knowledge of his/her own family and the history surrounding it. Oral narratives and writings, such as journals, stories, or speeches to others are stress-relieving mechanisms that can reduce the external stress. The narrating of one 's thoughts definitely does not initially affect the external stressors one is facing. Narrating does, however, allow one to share these feelings with others and to organize one 's thoughts around these issues. More significantly, narrative opportunities such as these, work to encourage and advance constructive contexts in which individuals such as a mother and daughter or father and son can openly communicate any differences, worries, or problems one might be having with daily living. A more important and serious issue interlaced with narratives is the "personal issue of telling stories about illness…" (Frank, ch.1 pg.2) Narratives are the beginning to the process of healing.…

I came to Kelley School of Business because I want to build a solid foundation that I could depend on and further enhance in the future. With putting hard work in academics and career development throughout my years of study at IUschool, an IT Advisory full-time job offer from EY was extended to me after my three-month internship this summer. It seemed like I reached the goal I always wanted. A: a career that I am passionate about could start in one year when I graduate. This might be the ultimate goal of many people who enter college in hope of finding a job that’ll feed them when they complete this four-year-education,The life is perfect for many people at this point, but I realized that all I longed for and achieved is no longer all I want. After my internship, as I was given high ratings by all team managers I worked with, I understand that it will takes more effort and expertise for me to excel among my peers. I believe that participating in MSIS program is essential to my career development. My undergraduate study prepared me well for the real world, but I believe that MSIS program’s challenging curriculum, with MBA Electives, strategic learning, and experiential learning, would provide me with the specific skillset and mindset I need to stand out from my co-works and explore more career paths.…

    My Personal Manifesto

Socrates said “The unexamined life is not worth living.” I’ve taken some time to be alone, in quiet, and examine what I believe. Some of these are theological, some philosophical, and others are political. They are in no particular order and may not be comprehensive. These are right for me. You may feel differently and I’d love to civilly and respectfully discuss those differences. Here is the result of my self-examination of what I stand for. These things are an integrated unit so if you are interested, read them all first and then we should talk. I believe……

Example personal statement A: I have known in my heart since I was a little girl what I wanted to be when I grew up. It was not a stereotypical child’s dream such as a doctor or an astronaut; my vision was instead something that has shaped my actions and decisions throughout my life. In the last few years I have realized that my passion for conserving the environment is a natural calling that I am destined to follow. This intuitive notion solidified while visiting my mother in Maryland a few summers ago. In my old bedroom my mother has kept framed memorabilia from my childhood. One night before I went to sleep I looked on the bed-stand to find an old article that dated back to my third year of elementary school. After rereading this article thirteen years later, with a smile, I recognized my destiny is and has always been devoting my career to the conservation and preservation of our ecosystems. In my third grade class we attempted to introduce higher biodiversity along a creek through adding plants, which in turn attracts other organisms. Some of the older teenagers had rampaged through and stole our plants while trampling the beautiful ecosystem. I wanted to send a message to stop such destruction and the following article ended up in our town newspaper. Although I was only in third grade, the destruction of the environment affected me more deeply than most of my fellow classmates and continues to do so today. I wish to embark on an educational journey to beautiful Montverde, Costa Rica for the Tropical Ecology and Conservation program in the Spring of 2009. In order to take this step in my educational career, I am applying for financial aid through the John E. Bowman Travel Grants, CIEE International Study Programs Scholarships, and the Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship for studies in Tropical Biology. Throughout my life I have always been passionate about contributing to the conservation our earth. It became…
