A Letter to an Old Friend
Dear Victim,
It must have taken some sort of genius to do as they did. To turn those you had been friends with away and those who would never give you a chance to know them. Snakes that resemble people twisting words and planting hate and rumors with no foundation of reality whatsoever. It’s not right. I wish we would stop calling it bullying and call it for what it really is. Abuse.
What kind of human being makes fun of you for something that is completely out of you control? What kind of human being throws eggs at not only your house but at you as well? What kind of human being pees on your door and gets someone to take a picture of it and post it on the internet? What kind of human being tries to knock down the one already on their knees? All these acts of abuse that you go through are not okay, but you are not alone. Did you know about 160 000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack by other students? According to bullying statistics, 87% of students said shootings are motivated by a desire to “get back at those who have hurt them. And 1 out of every 10 students who drops out of school does so because of repeated bullying. (MBNBD Bullying Facts & Statistics)
The effects bullying has on people aren’t just short term. Some follow you well into your adult life. Bullying usually starts in your childhood which is the foundation of your life. How are you supposed to cope as an adult when you’ve been beaten down during some of the most important years of your life? Bullying can and most often does cause depression and anxiety. Bullying is killing people. According to Canadian studies in 2008, there were 233 suicides among 10 to 19-year- olds, accounting for 20.4 per cent of all deaths for that age group. In recent studies, 50% of people who were surveyed admitted they had thought about committing suicide as a result of bullying. (Kirky, Sharon para. 5)

There has been a progression of bullying happening as many may have noticed, in order to be able to get the bullying to stop or to even calm down someone needs to step up and have a talk, or needs to discipline the bullies. Walking down hallways at school, people say mean words, they do not think of other people's feelings as they say the cruel words coming out of their mouths. Mostly, the reasons being why children, and young adults are usually bullying someone may be because they were not disciplined enough as a child, their parents may have not been around to do so, or they may have a rough life at home. The reasoning trying to be stated is the bullying comes from selfish people. A person can tell if somebody else is selfish or not because selfish people tend to block out what others are feeling around them, how their days went, and/or what is going on in their lives. Selfish people do not care about anyone else except for themselves. A selfish person could see somebody with nothing to their name and still not help them because they do not want to do anything for anybody else. Everyone may have a friend or a family member who they may think is a selfish person, as many people may know a person that is selfish do not be afraid to stand up to them and knock them down and tell them what they are doing is wrong. Selfish people are everywhere in todayś society and they do not care if…

In the article by John Cloud, “The Myths of Bullying,” he expresses the exaggeration of the supposed growing “epidemic” of bullying that is spreading across schools. He then begins by presenting two stories that relate to bullies and victims of bullying in their own right. One of which is about a shooting at Chardon High School, Ohio, where 5 students were shot and 3 killed. The other is about a suicide at Rutgers University where the victim was supposedly tormented by his roommate causing him to jump off the G.W. Bridge. Following these events and a couple more, measures have been rushed into place in response to these tragedies--furthering the idea of a growing bullying epidemic. Though, this is most likely an exaggeration as the U.S Department of Justice reported about 37% of students reporting that they do not feel safe at school. However, these figures have remained stable the way they are over the years, supporting the fact that the bullying epidemic is just an exaggeration.…

Bullying takes place in two different forms that is, traditional bullying and cyber & indirect bullying. I am sure that we can all, regretfully, think of an incident where you or someone you know have been bullied. Whether it was being called a derogatory name, being singled out because of your race, or even somebody saying something inappropriate about you on facebook. All of these examples are far too familiar in today’s society. So familiar, in fact, that statistics show that one out of every four teens face problems with bullying on a daily basis, whether it is mentally, verbally or physically (Fox,3). Bullying has not only ruined the lives of victims, but also ruined the lives of the bullies themselves. Many people do not understand the negative effects bullying has on oneself and/or their family until they are actually involved in a bullying situation. Bullying is a fact of modern society, however, knowing the psychological and even physical effects that bullying can cause, preventative measures should be taken by parents, teachers and school administrators to abolish bullying for good.…

“Let’s begin by saying that we are living through a very dangerous time. Everyone in this room is in one way or another aware of that. We are in a revolutionary situation, no matter how unpopular that word has become in this country. The society in which we live is desperately menaced, not by Al Qaeda, but from within. To any citizen of this country who figures himself as responsible – and particularly those of you who deal with the minds and hearts of young people – must be prepared to ‘go for broke.’ Or to put it another way, you must understand that in the attempt to correct so many generations of bad faith and cruelty, when it is operating not only in the classroom but in society, you will meet the most fantastic, the most brutal, and the most determined resistance. There is no point in pretending that this won’t happen.”…
