Personal Essay: My Cheer Career
“5, 6, 7, 8, who do we appreciate? GOOOOO TEAM!!!” That’s a phrase I’ve said quite a few times in my life. As a cheerleader, I tend to say whatever I can to get the crowd pumped, even if we’re down by 30 points in the 4th quarter. Since six years old, I was the most energetic person out on the sidelines, cheering on my home team. I thought that my “cheer career” would last forever. So imagine my surprise when it abruptly came to an end. In the 10th grade, my mother made me quit the cheerleading team, due to a C on my report card, but this turn of events became the best thing that could ever happen to me. I used to think that cheerleading was the only sport/activity for me. I devoted all of my time, energy, and money to it. I practiced every day and spent hundreds of dollars every year on shoes, uniforms, and hotels at the competitions. Ever since that all ended, I’ve been saving money and gaining so much free time. I even opened myself up to new activities. In March of 2016, I found out that my school had a lacrosse team, so I tried out. I had never even heard of “lacrosse”! In the end, I made the team, I made new friends, and I made new opportunities for myself in life. One very interesting thing I found out about myself was that I loved to sing. Singing, to me, feels like finding your favorite shirt …show more content…
It feels like forever ago that I was following my dreams of being an NFL cheerleader. Two years ago, after cheering for eight years, my life ended, or so I thought. I had my heart crushed when my mother told me I was not able to cheer anymore, due to a slight inconvenience. Even though that portion of my life was over, a new part was just getting started. I was in a musical, on a lacrosse team, and every other aspect of my life began to turn around for the better. I feel like this was just like an arrow getting pulled back, in order to be launched forward, because even though I had to go through this minor setback, it set me up for some major

My partner of eleven years is my greatest cheerleader. When I feel overwhelmed and depressed she gives me encouragement to conquer every challenge I’m faced with. In addition to my partner, another influential person in my life is a co-worker and friend. She fills the maternal role that is absent in my life, by giving me advice, different perspectives, and confidence. My career plays a vital role in my resilience, it gives me cause to wake up and achieve greatness each day. The children I work with inspire me to be a better educator, nurturer, and caregiver. When I am feeling depressed nothing lifts my spirits speedier, than my students. I believe it is a gift to have the availability to focus on constructing children’s strengths, rather than…

Most people say cheerleading is not a sport, but to me it is. It all began when I was four years old and my mom signed me up to cheer for the Harrisburg Packers. I was nervous at first, but then it turned out to be a lot of fun. Everyone on the team was tall except for me and one other girl. Her name was Tatum. The first thing I thought was that I was going to get picked on by all the other girls because I was so little and shy, but it turned out to be totally different.…

Freshman year my best friend and I made an impulse decision to go to the high school cheer clinic. As a way to make friends and to make both are moms happy, since they were both cheerleaders . After the first day of clinic we were both hooked. Cheerleading to most is full of popular girls that are selfish, snobby, and don't have a sense of morality. But to me and my team we are nothing like that. My team is a mismatched group of girls that found a love in cheering on other sport teams. Spending upwards of 8 hours with the same twenty six girls a week makes anybody to become incredibly close and that is what I have gotten to. We may fight but, with these groups of girls my life would of never been the same. We are all there for eachother no…

I’ve been a competitive cheerleader for the last seven years, and I can’t imagine doing any other sport. I’ve been a part of the Maryland Twisters cheerleading organization for three years, and as soon as I sat in on one of Eye of the Storms, the special needs team, practice I wanted to be a part of the team. After watching Eye of the Storm practice, I was amazed at the hard work and determination the athletes. I wanted to experience the love of cheerleading with these inspiring athletes. As soon as the new cheerleading year started, I spoke with the owner of Maryland Twisters about helping out with their special needs teams, Eye of the Storm and Storm Chasers. I was thrilled when she said the other coaches would love the extra help with the teams.…

As a young child we tend to look up to a certain person or trait that appeals to us. Basketball, baseball, gymnastics, dance, and even cheerleading are the most popular sports that are have its participants viewed as “role models”. Every day you can see younger kids being captivated by any of these sports and the people who are involved. Cheerleading has typically been seen as a group of popular girls who aren’t intelligent in any way. Throughout my research journey though, I was on a mission to find out what is it about cheerleading that captivates people and what the social or personal benefits are for those that are a part of the subculture.…

As I turned the corner into the tunnel that seemed like was filled with 1000 cheerleaders all praying for the same thing I could barrely hear my coach shriek with what she has left of her voice “this is are year LEAVE NO ROOM! Don’t let them take away what you worked so hard for this is NEW RO’S TIME I CAN FEEL IT!” my body churned as the worlds flew through my head. The Nemorie of her saying something simalier to me last year flashed in to my mind and instantly my stomach tightened my heart left likelike a throwping sore I felt myself begin to sweat as all my pores opeaned and a chiver ran through my body. I would not fall at nationals again, not this year! Over the booming music of another team performing about 50 feet away from us and the crowd screaming back”GO. FIGHT,WIN yell it!” Essients gracefully screamed “GIRL HUDLE UP ITS TIME” embacring the girls next to me I joined the circle as me and my family began to pray as andrea broke in to try and calm us down “ there is no reason for us to be praying we worked to hard to let this slip out of are hands we all just have to believe and push each other out we all know every one of of can do this!” I could tell every one was nerves but tohers showed it differently esseiens just wanted to hit the floor and kill that ruteen wile jillian was in the corner crying . WE brought them back and made every one rmeber to give 100 percent NOTHING MORE NITHING LESS then next thing I knew we were next it seemed like it had flew by we were just at the end of the tunnel. AS the Uca worked looked at us and said “ New Ro better kill it” we all laughted and started to calm down. I hated to leave them there but I can’t be late for class. I kept running and my eyes were focused behind me to make sure none of the cheerleaders were following me, luckily they weren’t but I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going. The second I looked in front of me, I ran into a girl carrying a ton of books. I ended up tackling her and everything she was carrying fell to the ground. I jumped to my feet and helped the girl stand, “Oh my god, I’m so sorry. Are you ok?” I asked while picking up her books. The girl nodded and grabbed her folders and notebooks that fell out of her backpack. I looked at the girl, she had long brown hair that was up in a ponytail, there were purple glasses resting on her face. She wore a grey jacket, black…

I knew something was serious and my parents came and drove me to the hospital. At the hospital they told me my appendix was about to burst and I would have to have emergency surgery. For the next 6 weeks I was mandated to sit out as I watched my senior season slip through my fingertips. I sat at home for the first week and reflected on how my attitude should be when I come back. I came to the conclusion I was still the leader of the team and even if I wasn’t able to play, I could still lead the team and show my commitment through continuous support. It was not easy. Watching your whole school cheer on everyone else, knowing you are the game changer sitting on the sideline because of a fluke body reaction. Through all of this I learned to fight through hard times and be positive and work hard because when I was able to return, I was more than ready. In the final game I played and my first game back, I rushed for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and led the defense in tackles. I can truly say I have never been more proud of myself and not only was it because I worked hard to recover from my injury, but because I showed my teammates that I would not give up and I would stick by them and do everything possible. It was a bittersweet feeling to leave the field for my last high school football game, but it was definitely more sweet than…

At a normal summer camp, a few dozen fifteen-year-old girls wouldn’t be told to spend a night alone in the woods. Camp Cheerio isn’t a normal summer camp. I’ve been going to Camp Cheerio every summer since I was eight years old, and I’ve loved every second of being there. The summer before sophomore year of high school was the last year that I could be a camper. Part of being in your last year as a camper is doing CREW. The acronym “CREW” stands for Courage, Responsibility, Enthusiasm, and Worth. In CREW all of the last year campers do things such as team building, being a counselor for a day, hiking eleven miles to and from Stone Mountain, and more. However, the most significant part of CREW was doing Solo Night. During Solo Night, each…

after all of the hard work and energy I placed into cheer we didn't win… We didn't even place. Done with getting below standard grades and having a constant lack of sleep, I quit cheer for my Junior year only helping out with the football girls occasionally. When Senior year rolled around the football cheerleaders didn't have anyone to help them lead practices and learn dances so I would spend all of my free time with them, while at the same time going to cross country practice and running races every Saturday and then running over to the football field to cheer for a whole game. That was exhausting, but I was a senior so I wanted to have the best senior year possible. Basketball cheer came around and it was basically a repeat of sophomore year except we tried harder and focused more, we pulled through! We took regionals by a storm by getting the title of regionals champs and then went to state with confidence. We performed our dance did our cheer and hoped for the best… We got state champions! Oh but thats not it, we got grand champions. That basically means we won all of the devisions of cheer, and those are 1A, 2A, 3A (thats us), and 4A. I got onto the all cheer team (a team of the best cheerleaders from all of the school in Alaska) and the whole…

One thing I am good at is cheerleading. With cheerleading you have to be able to work in a group and as a team. If everyone isn't working together then someone might get hurt. With this sport you have to either throw someone up in the air, or be thrown up in the air. Also there is a lot of dancing through the entire routine, along with jumping and tumbling. You don’t have to have tumbling to be on the team however, it is highly recommended that you do. Many people think cheerleading is just standing around and yelling but it isn't, most of the time you are running around the mat and doing multiple different things. Cheerleading may look easy but it takes a lot of endurance and…

It was the summer before my senior year when my hockey coach looked me in the eyes and said, “John, we don't have a spot for you on the team.” Immediately a feeling of complete devastation and anger coaxed over my body as I stormed out of the room; but after collecting my emotions, I decided to stay involved with the team and be a student manager. I didn't realize it at the time, but deciding to manage that team was a defining moment in my life because it helped me discover my true passion and vocation. While I was a manager, I spent a lot of time with my school’s athletic training staff and got to see them in action every day. Our staff was constantly working to help get injured athletes back on the court, field, or ice. I had never seen…

I had been overwhelmed with the thought of cheer tryouts coming up. Completely submerged in the routines, trying to perfect every step. Thinking about tryouts worried me more than anything. I stayed cool, calm, and collected around my friends so that I didn’t stress them out any more than they already were. Every girl, whose goal was to be on the team, was on edge, waiting for that day. I knew that being a cheerleader on the varsity team was what I wanted most, and I was doing anything and everything in my power to make sure I was ready.…
