Personal Digital Assistants

A PDA is a digital organizer, or personal digital assistant that can be comfortable held in your hand (it is also called a handheld computer). It is designed to fit in a pocket, run on batteries and be used while you 're holding it (Computer Concepts, pg. 7). It can function as a cell phone, send faxes, read email and be used as a personal organizer. It uses among other things. PDA 's use a stylus, or pen, rather than a keyboard. It 's size, portability, applications and amazing range of features is what makes it so appealing.

The first PDA 's were inexpensive pocket sized devices designed to store addresses and appointments. The first attempt at creating a commercially viable hand-held dates back to the early 1980s. The cost for such a device ranges anywhere from $80 to $500. http://www.palmone.com/us/products/handhelds/

• Diary/scheduler
• To-do list
• Phone/address book
• Notepad
• Drawing application
• Finance software
• Calculator
• Alarms
• World time
• File manager
• Voice recorder
• Data synchronization
• Printer connection.
• Email
• Web browser
• Word processor
• Spell checker
• Custom dictionary
• Spreadsheet.

All of these are nice, but one of the best features in my opinion is the ability to synchronize the PDA with your desktop or laptop computer (sometimes referred to as "hot

Palm has a significant advantage when it comes to effectively competing with its rivals. This is mainly because of its ability to effectively use technology. When the Windows CE operating system began to rival Palm with color and multimedia applications, Palm was able to respond with a version of the Palm OS that has color screens. It is understandable that the features of the Palm OS lagged behind Windows CE, since color screens were not Palm's main objective. However, the Palm OS was still highly preferred by many customers because it was faster and required less hard disk capacity. This preference for lightweight, easy-to-use devices is the philosophy that Palm was founded upon, and gives Palm the advantage of being completely customer-oriented. Its rivals, on the other hand, seem to be more oriented toward better technology, and not necessarily the aesthetics of the products they are marketing.…

However, like all consumer technology products, it faces the threat of increased competition from other players in the market (Menon, A. et al., 1999).…
