The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I loved my book, “Perks of Being a Wallflower”, for the following reasons, because of the characters. I love the main character Charlie and his friends. I love the setting. And I love how they ended the book in the hospital. I love the characters because I can relate a lot to Charlie, since he’s a freshman in high school, like me. And how he was scared of High School. In the beginning of the book it said he was very quiet and really shy.in the beginning of the year I was really shy and quiet because I had to make new friends because all my friends went to Shephard High School. But we both had to make new friends because Charlie’s best friend, Michael, committed suicide. So, Charlie overcame that fear of going up to people and met Patrick and his step sister, Sam. Which later in the book and became best friends. “Mary Elizabeth: Charlie, Charlie, what do you think about high school? Charlie: High school? Bull$#!t. The cafeteria is called the Nutrition Center; people wear their leather jackets even when it's 98 degrees out. And why do they give out leather jackets to marching band? It's not a sport. We all know it. Mary Elizabeth: This kid is crazy. Charlie: Mary Elizabeth, I think you're really gonna regret that, you know. Charlie: haircut when you look back at old photographs. I'm really sorry. That sounded like a compliment in my head.” That excerpt was when Charlie went to high school for the first time and his friends asked him, how was his first day of school and he thought high school would be different. That’s how he is throughout the whole book, funny but shy. The setting usually takes place at school, most of the time. “The point, though, is that there is a guy in shop class named “nothing.” I’m not kidding. His name is “nothing.” And he is hilarious. “Nothing” got his name when kids used to tease him in middle school. I think he is a senior now.” (pg. 12) That’s when he met Patrick in shop class. Also, when he beat up the football player that was beating up his best friend Patrick because brad was denying his sexuality but Charlie stop the fight and save Patrick from it. But there is times where he is at home talking about his sister and her boyfriend and his brother and his football. They also added high school parties. After prom, he went to his first high school party. He accidently ate a pot brownie and got high and made lots of new friends. I love everywhere that took place in the book. It really shows the “teenage life.” Charlie threw out the whole book, he has been hospitalized. But the last letter he wrote really closes off of feelings of hope. He hopes he will get out of the hospital soon, seeing Patrick and Sam. Hopes to see his family. He hope his parents will forgive him. He hopes that his aunt will forgive him from all the stuff he said about how it was his fault she died. And how if his birth date wasn’t on Christmas, hopes his aunt would have never died. He hopes that he finds new friends sophomore year, since Sam and Patrick won’t be there because they are going to college. And most importantly, he hopes he will try not be a wallflower. “The hardest part was sitting in the doctor’s office when the doctor told my mom and dad what really happed. I have never seen my mother cry so much. Or my father so angry. Because they didn’t know it was happening when it was.” Charlie before he went to the hospital he took LSD or acid, as they referred it as, and he had been having these symptoms of it. And then he had no control of what he was doing. In one part of the book he said he was completely naked and just watching the TV.
