Introduction

An organisation is driven by its mission and strategic objectives coupled with core values and various methods of managing people in the organisation. A study was carried out on three organisations which have varied methods of doing so depending on the industry, size, professional mix and structure.
Table 2.1 below shows 3 different types of organisations and their demographic and structure:

The comparison study is done between the eChannels department in Bank Islam, KHEC Systems Sdn
Bhd (“KHEC”) and PwC Malaysia Advisory (“PwC Advisory”). The 3 organisation are from different industries; banking, information technology and consulting. The structure of each organisations are derived from Mintzberg (1979). Organisational structure evolves through time due to expansion and each structure has its unique sets of challenges. One of the challenges includes managing people and their performances.

Performance management of organisations

Performance Management is about doing everything in your power to help your employees succeed and encouraging them to manage their own performance. Effective performance management helps employees help themselves and this can be done through formal or alternative approaches. Whether the organisation has 1 person or 100 people, performance management is a systematic approach.

    It is important that we assess performance both informally and formally. Informal assessment is the day to day supervision of individuals and teams by in our case the team leaders. It is important to use our day to day observations and communications to sort any performance issues as soon as they arise. We can see if the team members are carrying out their procedures in the correct way, not only efficiently and to the required standards but also in a safe way not compromising the health and safety standards. First we will look at performance-based-pay as a policy for recognizing employee contributions.     According to the case the dispute is between Sarawak Bank Employees' Union (''the Union'') and Sarawak Commercial Banks Association (''the Association''). The dispute is over the incorporation of ''higher similar benefits'' by way of variation into the 12th Collective Agreement for the period commencing 1st January 2009 and ending on 31st December 2011, which has been given cognizance by the Court. This case was referring by the Honourable Minister of Human Resources made under section 26(2) of the Industrial Relations Act 1967. This case represents by Mr Andrew Lo Kian Nyan together with Mr Denis Aidan @ Faisal and Ms Teresa Wong for the Union and Mr Leonard Shim together with Mr Nicholas Wung of Messrs Reddi & Co. for the Banks Association. In this case, the Sarawak Union was concerned about the Association conferring higher benefits on employees in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. However, the said Memorandum was not deposited in Court and did not receive cognizance. In order to overcome the Union's concern, the parties prior to executing the 12th.Collective Agreement, on 8th. March 2010 entered into a ''Memorandum of Agreement'' (''the said Memorandum'') whereby the Association agreed to extend to the Union any ''higher similar benefit'' given to Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. This dispute has been referred to the Industrial Court as a trade dispute under section 26(2) of the Act. For the conclusion, by a majority the Union's prayer to extend the four similar higher benefits to Sarawak by way of variation of the 12th Collective Agreement under section 17(2) of the Act is…
