Perfect Nail Poisoned Workers Summary
According to Sarah Maslin Nir in “Perfect Nail, Poisoned Workers,” the outcome of perfect nails should be an issue everyone should be cognizant of. However, the fact is that many people aren’t aware that manicurist are being affected by the chemicals used in salons. While other may agree that there is an issue Nir argues that it is a bigger issue that has to be stopped. Yet the industry has not taken much action to endorse the problem. As a result, many of the workers have developed health problems. So, can beauty actually be painful?
Beauty is pain in fact, as Nir revealed that some chemicals in nail products are causes of cancer, miscarriages, abnormal fetal development, and harm to the reproductive health. In addition, manicurist are not the only ones being affected, as studies have shown that cosmetologist, hairdresser, and makeup artist are also affected. In addition, Dr. Charles Hwu has found that many women that work in the industry have had asthma and allergy like symptoms. In the event that they get nosebleeds, throat aches, breathing problems and even contract disease due to working with deleterious chemicals. As Nir has emphasized we should take a closer look at the working conditions that people have to deal with. Because of this many people have provided ways on how to maintain a healthy work environment. Such as using gloves and opening windows. While other salons have not supported their manicurist to have a healthier work environment, They have preferred manicurist to avoid the gloves and the act of caring for themselves. There only being today fifty-five salons that have taken action into maintaining a healthy work environment. Some of which have supported a 1938 bill that will provide them with FDA overseeing their cosmetics and giving the agency recall abilities. Which in fact Nir believes this till gives salons a way to regulate their own
