Throughout history, there have been instances in which people have had to stay silent or submit to a certain behavior or expectation, and there are other instances in which they have chosen to. “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericcson and “Why Don’t We Complain” by William F. Buckley Jr. are essays that cover, respectively, the subjects of lying and its presence and prevalence within society, and also the absence of complaining, or more so, not complaining, and the extent to which we make or do not make our voices heard on a day to day basis. They also stress, along with their main ideas, the subtheme of a general loss that people face with these actions, or lack thereof. 1. Doublespeak is the ability to use vague truths and positive deflecting language to redirect a person’s opinion or view on a potentially caustic issue. While not an actual act of lying, doublespeak is structured in such a way that it subconsciously nudges us to accept a more positive form of reality as truth, even if a clearly adverse topic is being presented or confirmed. The structure of doublespeak is enthusiastically circular; it never allows direct confirmation of an undesirable condition or event, yet proposes a more palatable outlook on the topic in question. Careful verbiage is used to discourage the ingesting of a topic in an undesirable interpretation, and to afford the audience more promising descriptions and thought processes to consume instead. Professor Lutz maintains that the doublespeak words actually manifest themselves as the perceived reality, thus softening the blow of a negative situation with optimistic language and careful inflection. A string of positive words is a lot easier to objectify and accept as truth than the actual act of a catastrophe or other harmful action. / For one to refer to their self as democratic, he or she has to believe in the fundamental ideology behind democracy. In my junior year, when I heard I made the honor roll at my high school, I was overcome with a feeling of fulfillment. This was the first time I had made the honor roll and with this achievement was a feeling of pride for the work I put in, and for the way the work reflected in my grades. But, I stayed hungry and kept working to maintain this honor, and I finished on the honor role for the entirety…
