Peer Pressure
Peer pressure these days has had major effects on our children and young adults. Decisions are being made that are unheard of to parents and teachers. Don’t think that the adolescence making these choices isn’t struggling to grasp hold of the concepts of what they are doing. Unknowingly, our generation is making choices that will effect the rest of their lives. Whether or not it’s the way we dress or a decision in unprotected sex, it’s still a decision made based on the approval of our peers. Who are we now a days. If we are just living to be who are friends want us to be, we lose individualism. Peer pressure has effected, the music listened to, and the clothes wore, sexual activity, drugs, skipping school, reckless driving and many other behaviors, causing the loss of individualism in this generation.
Children go to school and see what their other classmates are wearing to know what is expectable for them to buy. How many times do we hear now “Mom, I can’t wear that, the other kids will make fun of me!” Kids are afraid of disapproval from their peers, they are afraid to stand out and be different. This causes problems like low self-esteem and the need for approval. People pleasing can be a very unhealthy situation. It adds to a very large percentage of the world’s stress. Leading to depression and failure to perform everyday tasks. Possibly even leading to holes in the economy.
Music is another expression that is now chosen by the approval of others. Students that may be interested in instrumental music or show tunes have been persecuted for that choice being called things such as a band nerd, or an orch dork. It’s a personal decision. How are you going to allow someone to tell you what you like? It seems a little ridiculous. Say someone asks you, “why do you like listening to rap?” Is your answer going to be, “because my friends do.”? When your friends answer could be, “I like it because I like the quick rhymes and controversy.” We are creating little
