This study was inspired by the literary elements in the book Prietita y la llorana. The book used to be passed down orally through generations, until it was published. It demonstrated how literacy was taught and passed on in their culture. Schools in South Texas believe their Mexican-American youth are not at the same literacy level as the rest of the children. However, the Family Institute for Early Literacy (FIELD) used this book to begin a study to see if these children are in fact literate when they begin school, they just aren't aligned with the current standards of teaching. Their goal was to discover the methods that these parents used to teach their children literacy.…

A person who faces such challenges when it comes to learning how to read can best tell his or her story on the success of reaching such an accomplishment. Having someone like that to speak can be, and inspiration to those who are willing but yet lack the desire to learn. It is necessary to give those in need a role model who was once just like them but was able to reach their educational goals (Belzer, 2002). With the help of those individuals who face adult literacy, they can provide a service to educators on the best way to teach…

The purpose for this fundraiser is to raise awareness about adult illiteracy. The book festival fundraiser will target the adults who struggle academically and in the workforce because of illiteracy. Reading is a fundamental skill necessary to succeed in the world today. According to Boyer (1994) “Children are our most precious resource. Their well-being is bound to the well-being of us all. To neglect anything that will improve their chances in school and life is simply foolhardy, since to invest in children is to invest in the future of the nation.” Reading will develop these children into well-spoken, well-rounded, and intellectual adults.…

Social Education, Farmers Functional Literacy Programmes (FFLP), National Adult Education Programme (NAEP), Rural Functional Literacy Programmes (RFLP) Point No.16 of 20 point programme etc were some of the important programmes launched to promote literacy in our country. National Literacy Mission was the major programme, through which Post Literacy and Continuing Education Programmes in the country were strengthened. Sakshar Bhatath is the latest programme in the field, with focus on women in the country.National Literacy Mission (NLM) played a key role in promoting literacy rate from 36.23% to 52.11% in India during 1981 to 1991. Even though the participants were non-literates in the beginning, the system failed to identify their capacities and skills as adults.. Majority of the participants in these programmes were from rural areas with certain skills and capacities. Their skills and capacities were under estimated and focus was given only on their abilities in reading, writing and numeracy.…

Architecture is a field in which time is needed in every corner. As we have noticed, many of the students taking up Bachelor of Science in Architecture are prone to be busy and are exceedingly occupied that they have no time for things that may destruct them from their main attention which is doing their plates and researches. In accordance to that, they are fully loaded in their major subjects and sometimes have no time to attend their general education subjects because of the busyness. Since these are the lifestyle of Architecture students, it will result in dropping some of their general education subjects for the reason that they cannot occupy the time in attending such subjects which are not that much related to the course they have taken up.…

We report the results from a randomized evaluation of a mobile phone education program (Project ABC) in Niger, in which adult students learned how to use mobile phones as part of a literacy and numeracy class. Overall, students demonstrated substantial improvements in literacy and numeracy test scores, suggesting that the adult literacy curriculum is effective in increasing learning. Students in ABC (mobile phone literacy) villages showed substantial additional gains in numeracy exam scores, but we cannot rule out that there are no effects on literacy in the full sample. There is evidence of heterogeneity in program effects across regions, suggesting the impact is stronger in a relatively more densely populated region. Furthermore, both literacy and numeracy effects are stronger and statistically significant for younger populations. There is also evidence of persistent impacts: six months after the end of the first year of classes, students in ABC villages retained what they had learned better than the non-ABC students. These effects do not appear to be driven by differences in teacher quality or in teacher and student attendance. These results suggest that simple and relatively cheap information and communication technology can serve as an effective and sustainable learning tool for rural populations. The teaching of literacy is built upon the visual materials generated in each community, such as maps, matrices, calendars or diagrams. A strong link is made between active discussion of local issues and the capacity of people to communicate about them and act upon them. Empowering participants so that they are better enabled to improve their conditions of life is a central objective and the need for literacy is seen as interwoven with this. The emphasis is on actively producing texts rather than passive reading. Core materials to read are produced by participants with the help of a facilitator. No primers are used as they are seen as barriers to a participatory approach. However, supplementary reading materials are brought into the circles for practice and critical reading. Literacy facilitators are recruited locally, given a short initial course in REFLECT methodology, typically of two to three weeks’ duration. This is followed up by regular bi-weekly (later monthly) meetings of local facilitators, ongoing refresher training (three to five days every few months) and by support/supervision visits about once a month by supervisors who often are of high educational calibre. An evaluation of REFLECT carried out in 1996 in three…
