Pbis Pros Cons
This week’s article discussed PBIS strategy to improving academic and behavior alike. This article covered rules, rewards, ways to boost school-wide behavior, and improving academics. This program is a long-term program in which all involved must buy into it. Based on research there are many pros and a few cons of this improvement strategy.
This article pointed out a vast number of pros that endorse this program as a positive way to change negative behaviors and improve academics at the same time over an extended amount of time. Some of the pros that were pointed out in this program include but are not limited to positive social and academic outcomes for targeted students, increase family involvement, decrease out of district student placement,

There are ten myths about this program that even I was leery of until I read the article. Here are a few that myths that I came across in my search for information. These include rewarding students for what they should be doing, PBIS has a proven record of improving school climate at schools across the country, introducing PBIS to a school can produce a fair share of resistance., Educators may fear that PBIS will leave them with no effective means of behavior management, Administrators may be reluctant to upend the traditional system of discipline, you may even get some pushback from the students, rewards students for what they are supposed to be doing, the “Positive” in PBIS just means handing out treats and other goodies whenever kids behave, it does not work at the high school level, rewards are bribery, once you stop rewarding a specific behavior, students stop doing that particular behavior, PBIS is just a “program” that we’ll try for a while and then move on to something else, PBIS will add more responsibilities to my daily schedule, There is only one way to implement PBIS, and setting up a store for rewards is expensive and time-consuming(PBIS,2017). I feel that if this process is implemented correctly with the training of staff and administrators there is a good chance that it will be successful.     Washingtn Univeristy psychologist, Richard DeCharms, held a yearlong study on sixth grade students that were recieving a new type of teaching method that was taught to their teachers. Public School system wanting to begin a pilot program with Harvard University to participate in a program to financially reward targeted students in the middle school grades who appear to not see school as relevant to their lives.     When I first started my path towards my bachelor’s degree in education, I knew I was well on my way to becoming a teacher, I was excited to know that my dream was finally coming true.
