Payroll Case Study
Imagine that you are a business owner. Choose whether to hire a new person in the marketing department or upgrade your computer system. Each choice requires the same amount of investment. Address the following topics: What factors would you use to determine whether to invest in the additional capital or labor?

Upgrading a computer system can be a job that the new hire can do. While interviewing find someone who loves computers and loves marketing at the same time. After that entire person is working on computers all day so they should know how to upgrade a system. You can buy the part separately rather then paying someone the hourly rate to fix a computer system. That is why upgrading the computer system will be costly. A computer can make

One area that we haven’t looked at yet is payroll. Apollo collects information and forwards it to a third party payroll processing company. I have obtained a copy of their SAS 70 report, but to be honest, this is the first SAS 70 report that I have seen. Can you prepare a memo (ICP-1) discussing our responsibilities for auditing the controls at a service organization and whether a SAS 70 report fulfills our obligations under Section 404 of SOX? Also, if I remember correctly, there are two types of SAS 70 reports, but I don’t know which one we need and whether the attached letter is a Type 1 or Type 2 report. Don’t worry about Schedule X (referenced in the service auditor’s report) – I will go through it and include it in the workpapers later.…

This review was originally written for my Calculus I class but it should be accessible to anyone needing a review in some basic algebra and trig topics. The review contains the occasional comment about how a topic will/can be used in a calculus class. If you aren’t in a calculus class you can ignore these comments. I don’t cover all the topics that you would see in a typical Algebra or Trig class, I’ve mostly covered those that I feel would be most useful for a student in a Calculus class although I have included a couple that are not really required for a Calculus class. These extra topics were included simply because the do come up on occasion and I felt like including them. There are also, in all likelihood, a few Algebra/Trig topics that do arise occasionally in a Calculus class that I didn’t include. Because this review was originally written for my Calculus students to use as a test of their algebra and/or trig skills it is generally in the form of a problem set. The solution to the first problem in a set contains detailed information on how to solve that particular type of problem. The remaining solutions are also fairly detailed and may contain further required information that wasn’t given in the first problem, but they probably won’t contain explicit instructions or reasons for performing a certain step in the solution process. It was my intention in writing the solutions to make them detailed enough that someone needing to learn a particular topic should be able to pick the topic up from the solutions to the problems. I hope that I’ve accomplished this. So, why did I even bother to write this? The ability to do basic algebra is absolutely vital to successfully passing a calculus class. As you progress through a calculus class you will see that almost every calculus problem involves a fair amount of algebra. In fact, in many calculus problems, 90% or more of the problem is algebra. So, while you may understand the…

As the head of Information Technology at Acme, Inc., you are tasked with building a new payroll system to replace the existing system which is hopelessly out of date. Acme needs a new system to allow employees to record time card information electronically and automatically generate paychecks based on the number of hours worked and total amount of sales (for commissioned employees). The new system will be state of the art and will have a Windows-based desktop interface to allow employees to enter timecard information, enter purchase orders, change employee preferences (such as payment method), and create various reports. The system will run on individual employee desktops throughout the entire company. For reasons of security and auditing, employees can only access and edit their own time cards and purchase orders. The system will retain information on all employees in the company (Acme currently has around 5,000 employees world-wide). The system must pay each employee the correct amount, on time, by the method that they specify (see possible payment methods described later). Acme, for cost reasons, does not want to replace one of their legacy databases, the Project Management Database, which contains all information regarding projects and charge numbers. The new system must work with the existing Project Management Database, which is a DB2 database running on an IBM mainframe. The Payroll System will access but not update information stored in the Project Management Database. Some employees work by the hour and they are paid an hourly rate. They submit timecards that record the date and number of hours worked for a particular charge number. If someone works for more than 8 hours, Acme pays them 1.5 times their normal rate for those extra hours. Hourly workers are paid every Friday. Some employees are paid a flat salary. Even though they are paid a flat salary, they submit timecards that record the date and hours worked. This is so the system can…
