Another internship that prepared me for graduate school is through my internship at Paul Hom Asian Clinic (PHAC), which provided me an opportunity to be the cultural bridge between the doctor and the patient through my proficiency in Cantonese. I have gained a more interconnected perspective on how to interact with professionals and how to interact with patient populations from different area including adult and geriatric. Since UC Davis emphasizes on diversity, I am able to contribute to the team. I am able to understand the cultural and language barriers that many Asian American and immigrant Asian face and be able to provide insight to my team through my experience as an Asian and through what I have learned from my patients at PHAC including

A LAS 102 Transfer Advantage intern should be familiar with other cultures. This campus is diverse and filled with individuals from all parts of the U.S. and the world. Interns should be aware of social differences and respect one another’s perspectives. The ways I would make everyone feel included is to make sure everyone feels welcome. I would make it clear that all opportunities are for all students, no matter their diversity. For those struggling to find their place, I will refer them to culture houses and organizations. For some individuals, it can be overwhelming attending a large institution with a large diverse population. Individuals in my class will engage in-group discussion every day. Each time they must talk with someone they haven’t…

I am in my second year of the UA MPH program, which requires an internship component as a Master’s Report. Dr. McDermott recommended I meet with you to discuss possible projects I could be part of. My MPH concentration is Health Services Administration. I am mainly interested in quality improvement (QI) and practice management/strategic planning (I apologize for the broadness of my interest) in college health service settings. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Lundergan and reviewed the Campus Health Service QI program and some of the current studies.…

I’ve watched a neurosurgeon elbow deep inside a woman's spine, and within four hours he had improved her quality of life. That’s where I hope to go. As a physician, to have the privilege of awarding someone their life back. The commencement of this journey is Dartmouth. By utilizing the D-Plan, I am not limited by highly competitive internships. As someone with an interest in both biology and history, Dartmouth proffers an approach for successfully incorporating a History minor without compromising the structure of the Biology major. Furthermore, MAPS would educate me about health disparities that minorities face and offer guidance on the medical school application process.…

Doctor Academy and their Summer Internship are some of the things that I took advantage of. Doctor Academy has many opportunities that is helping me to figure out what career choices I want to explore and what college I wanted to attend. One way that Doctor Academy help me is when they get me involved in things that I am not used to doing, like having myself do a 13 page research, and shadowing a doctor. I would like to tell you that my day in the program was unique because it let me explore the program in depth. I am working at the Cleveland clinic as an English-Arabic healthcare interpreter and I feel the warm atmosphere between all the people in the hospital every day. Being in the hospital to facilitate the communication between the patients with limited English proficiency and the physicians made my dream of being a resident at the Cleveland Clinic grow within me. Those bilingual encounters made me familiar with the hospital departments where I had to work as a team with different staff, nurses and lab technicians to make sure that we provide the highest quality of care to the patients. Furthermore, I had a new friend waiting for me in…

My internship experience for this summer was quite engaging, exposing, knowledgeable, yet challenging at the same time. I began to serve at PSP Professional Services on May 31st. PSP Professional Services is a private practice created by one of the licensed counselors and it is funded through several insurances and/or employer-sponsored services. Moreover, my schedule consisted of going Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3p.m. Occasionally, I would attend Saturdays depending if there was an interpreter needed for the day. I chose this specific facility because it is located in the Hispanic area and I support the premise behind the foundation of this facility. PSP Professional Services hopes to reach out to those who have been victimized,…

However, it actually turned out that I had more in common with my African-American roommate, who was also came from a low-income household in Southern California, than I did with my 3rd generation Mexican-American roommate who came from a middle-class suburban city. I had no idea the impact that different generations and cultural differences outside of race have the ability to make until I actually experienced it. Thanks to this experience, I feel my culturally competency expanded to new horizons. As a social worker, I plan to take what I have learned from my experience and education of the transcultural perspective that San Jose State’s mission has established and practice it with people I work with. This will be one of the many ways I plan on contributing to the profession to promote social justice as well as advocate for the communities who consistently face oppression and social…
