Patriotism: Positive Psychology and Country
If you ever look up the word patriotism it will most likely say that it’s a noun and it means devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty. But it’s obviously more than that. It’s more than being loyal or defending your country. Patriotism is more than love. Patriotism, to me is not, I can assure you, what the dictionary defines it to be. It’s more than a word. It’s an emotion that only happens every once in a while, and when it does engulf it. Let it linger in your head that these amazing people go out, wake up every day fighting for us. We take it for granted that we’ll be okay. And I have no idea why. We should be grateful for what we have because some people don’t.

When I see veterans at the mall I get this special feeling and its weird you know. Its weird just looking at these warriors just living their lives normally like nothing has ever happened. They have scars though, whether it is mentally, seeing all those people die, or physically, like losing a leg. They’re brave and they show me to be brave too.

Just remember how many firefighters and policeman and everyone who was helping with 9/11. Some were just average people. The people that helped were the ones who saw their own kind in danger. We looked out for each other. We are proud of our country and everyone who makes a difference. We should be so happy for this country that we were given. We should be so grateful because not as many people get to have a great country like this. Whether we go in debt, whether our bravest die, no matter what happens we’ll be there for each other. That’s what is special about us. That’s what you call love. Love is strong enough to do anything and if we keep on loving how we are now our country will be happier than we ever will be.

Thank the heavens I live in this country. Thank God our country is weird at times and just mainly amazing. I don’t know anywhere else I’d like to live because all I need is here. This is all I want.

As a former president once said " And so, my fellow Americans ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country". Patriotism is found in every country, but it's the occupants of that country that have patriotism towards their own. This loyalty is seen in both "How to Tell a True War Story" and "Soldiers Home". Patriotism to me is one's natural right to show pride in being an American. Patriotism exists on different levels when taking into consideration people's perspective on war.…

Martha Nussbaum in her essay, “Can Patriotism Be Compassionate?” (2001), asserts that America has become a cold and selfish nation that has no interest in the well being of others around the world. Nussbaum supports this assertion with examples of the war in Iraq and other crises’ around the world. Her purpose is to change the way Americans think about, not only other nations and countries, but also the people of other Nations in general. She establishes a type of aggression towards her audience, who are most likely working middle and upper class Americans. Nussbaum’s methods of persuasion are impressive and convincing but her argument and solution have no real benefit behind it.…

Patriotism in America lacks the bold following of supportive Americans it used to possess. During World War II, Americans were willing to ration and work and fight harder for the whole of their country. JFK’s profound quote of “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” summarizes the basis of what patriotism should materialize as. John F. Kennedy speaks forth about steel companies raising prices in a time of turmoil and persuades Americans to ensure the tranquility of our great nation.…

Patriotism symbolizes the grave devotion, pride, loyalty, and love one shows for his or her’s country. It’s not just about igniting fireworks or having cookouts; it should be expressed each and every day we stand on our country’s grounds. In the passage John Mccain wrote, Mccain mentions about his friend Mike sowing on the American flag again on the inside of his shirt, because he knew it was important to everyone there with him. That shows so much pride he has for America. Mike didn’t care if he was beaten for disobeying the Vietnamese because he refuses to let his country down, and would probably take another beating just for the same reason. In current day America, a lot of Americans are retaliating against their country. There is a lot…

The final aspect of a patriot is pride for their country. This pride is taught in history classrooms all around the United States, in homes of this country’s people, and is held in the hearts of those who truly love “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Proud patriots range from the sweet, Vietnam veteran who wears his service cap proudly to the little girl who waves her flag on Independence Day. If one is truly proud of their country, it will be evident to those around…

What is patriotism? In today’s society, when hearing the word patriotism most people first think of the United States flag waving high in the air, the colors red, white, and blue, or the fireworks and parades on the fourth of July. There is more to patriotism than just these symbols and events. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of patriotism is “love for or devotion to one’s country.” Patriotism may be viewed in a positive way or a negative way depending on the person’s perspective, the period in history, or simply how a person was raised. Within Howells’s “Editha” and Twain’s “The War Prayer” one can find contrasting examples to illustrate the multiple perspectives of patriotism.…
