Speech (for VE):

Patriotism

What is Patriotism? Some say, it is just a word. A word without an importance in the English language. And really? They also used it as a form of jokes and goofing around with friends. But what does it really mean?

Patriotism is devoted love for ones country. That's according to the dictionary. But to ourselves, what does it really mean? For me, it is our care and love for our country, it is somehow related to the meaning by the dictionary. But for me, its not just a word, it is expressing it. Patriotism is shown, and expressed, not in our words, but in our action towards it.
Can you say that you're patriotic if your singing your national anthem? Well, let's say it is a form of respect to our country, but your just singing, you're not expressing it on how you should be doing it. What about, reciting the "Panatang Makabayan?" It is mostly done in schools, everyday we're always reciting it, and in a way, we cannot somehow to memorize it. It is like a simple poem, and we cannot recite it very well. Thousand of song lyrics and thousands of phone numbers, we can be able to memorize them in just a few days, but just a simple poem? We can't. Is that showing Patriotism? Reciting a national oath everyday and you cannot somehow to remember it. Is that patriotism?

Well I can't blame you. It is somehow boring. But, it cannot help our country to develop. Why? Let's see, we have so many factories to help us in our industry, and the people around it are it's witnesses, but is it just the factories that helps the country to make the industry successful? Well, its a NO. Yes, the citizens are helping, in a working way, but we are not being a good one. Reasons? We do not respect our flag, our oath, our anthem etc. Is that it? Is it being patriotic?

How to be one? Simple, be you, do whatever it takes to make you and your country successful, be a good citizen, follow the values, and do and act the doings that makes you patriotic with

The final aspect of a patriot is pride for their country. This pride is taught in history classrooms all around the United States, in homes of this country’s people, and is held in the hearts of those who truly love “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Proud patriots range from the sweet, Vietnam veteran who wears his service cap proudly to the little girl who waves her flag on Independence Day. If one is truly proud of their country, it will be evident to those around…

As a former president once said " And so, my fellow Americans ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country". Patriotism is found in every country, but it's the occupants of that country that have patriotism towards their own. This loyalty is seen in both "How to Tell a True War Story" and "Soldiers Home". Patriotism to me is one's natural right to show pride in being an American. Patriotism exists on different levels when taking into consideration people's perspective on war.…
