Introduction:
Honouring Patricia Uberoi
Satish Deshpande, Nandini Sundar and Amita Baviskar
Dear Patricia, You’ll be sorely missed. Thank you for all your wonderful work and for your enormous support over all these years. X
Dear Patricia, My belated wishes to you both (among the two most important people in my life) for Teachers Day. Y
When Patricia Uberoi handed over the files of Contributions to Indian
Sociology (CIS), we found these remarks from contributors and referees embedded in routine discussions about the work at hand. We instantly recognised in them sentiments we ourselves have felt several times over, as colleagues of Patricia, both on Contributions and at the Institute of
Economic Growth. Everyone who knows Patricia cherishes her gentle humour, her generosity—especially towards younger colleagues, her selflessness when it came to Contributions and her willingness to push the boundaries of existing research and open up new areas.
This collection of essays has been a long time in the making, much before they found a home as part of a special issue

This is because she is good at holding people accountable. In fact, when she is part of a group which aims at accomplishing a given goal, she does what she is supposed to do to meet her the goal and remind others to complete their tasks on time. For example, if she is part of a group which researching about a given issue, she would work on what she is support to work so as to complete the research and check if the rest of the group has done its part. This makes her excellent. I remember when we were working on a presentation, she was the one who reminded everyone to complete his/her assigned task. By the end, our presentation was excellent because of her good job.…

Staff Sergeant Barbara made me want to work hard with each and every moment we had at work. From the leadership I had in the past I was taught to do as little as possible so as to keep our customers from wanting more from us. This way of thinking is a terrible work ethic but hard to change when you have not been taught otherwise. Staff Sergeant Barbara showed me how to do as much as humanly possible for others by helping out in any way possible. This not only makes your customers appreciate you but also makes you realize you are making a difference in people lives for the better as well.…

The term sex and gender tends to be interchangeable in today’s society to help identify a character. In spite of that, sex is defined as a biological characteristic that differentiates male from female through characteristics like their reproductive organs, and gender is assigned by “the behavior and attitude that a society considers proper for its males and females” (Henslin J., 2014, p. 288). Nevertheless, if you were to explain the concept of gender as a structure you would look at men as the defender of their household and providers for their family through what society coined as masculinity. While on the other side, women are regarded as the nurturers in the family and provide the means of procreating, taking care of the kids while the husband is away; as well as, speak and behave in a gentle manner through what is known as femininity.…

In the play, “Trifles,” Susan Glaspell demonstrates the inequality that occurs between men and women during the 20th century. From the opening scene, the two women are not given much attention unlike the men, until they are separated from them and become the main characters. Although the women are seen as inferior to men, they prove that they are much more capable as they are the ones who solve the case by thinking outside the box. They find the real motive behind Mrs. Wright’s action and are able to understand her doing because of the way women were treated back then. Even though both women decide to defend Mrs. Wright by hiding the evidence, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters sympathize with her, but for different reasons.…

Everybody in today’s society experiences gender throughout his or her life. However, as a female, I have personally always been affected by the social construction of gender in my day-to-day life, whether I was aware of it or not. Gender is such a prominent aspect of life for everyone that we barely recognize the effect it has on us, especially when it’s constructed within our own families.…

Her personal qualities match with the ones that are often said to be the most imported characteristics of an entrepreneur. She is creative and she is really driven. Entrepreneurship is not about what is done but how its done. And she uses her possessed skills to max at all time in her company to make the best of it. I.e. in the start up phase of body shop she lacked money to buy in more bottles, so she began to offer a refill service. Its small measures like that that really makes me like her and her thinking.…
