Patient Harm In Health Care
Patient harm is an important issue in the healthcare settings. Not only the elderly, but also the children and women are vulnerable to medical errors and injuries that may be caused due to a number of reasons in the healthcare system. These reasons may include ineffective communication between healthcare professionals, medical errors and patient falls due to trips and slips. Patient falls often result in injuries that may vary from scratches and mild bruises to severe injuries. Medical errors also lead to injuries and in certain extreme cases may result in death of the patient too. This has a negative impact on the healthcare quality of the healthcare system. They also reviewed adverse event reports and medical records to identify the circumstances and patient characteristics involved in the first fall of the 183 patients who fell during the study period. The results of their study revealed that the average age of patients who fell was 63.4 years, but ages ranged from 17 to 96 years.
