Pat Mora's Why I am a Writer: Review
Why I am a Writer
Pat Mora

The essay “Why I am a writer” from Pat Mora explains why the author loves to write. She enjoys reading books and through her writing she would like others to discover the same joy she feels when she reads a book. She loves writing because she can find out more things about herself and also describe them. Most importantly she is a Hispanic writer and wants to share her ideas and stories because she believes it is important for Hispanics to take part in literature. I also think writing is a great way to express myself and my feelings to others because you can present your ideas in a more vivid way.
Pat wants readers to enjoy what she writes because she also likes to enjoy what she reads. Like she mentions in her essay “I love the Private-ness of reading and writing” (36). I agree with her, I think Reading is an adventure that can take you miles away without leaving your room. I love science fiction books because for a moment I am inside a story with castles and wizards and even dragons. Although we may all get the basic idea of a book our feelings towards it are private and different than others. I think Pat understands how amazing it is to read a good book and that’s the reason she writes, she wants to give us the same experience.
She enjoys learning about herself through writing. Since with writing she can express how she feels about the things that surround her. She says in her essay “I’m discovering what it is to walk on spongy autumn leaves and to watch snow drifting up in a strong wind”(37). I understand her because I came from Ecuador where it is mostly sunny and rainy to a place where I also saw snow for the first time. I believe we all go through changes in our lives, and it would be nice to write down my own feelings towards these changes.
Pat wants others to know how she felt growing up. How at first she felt ashamed to speak Spanish but later on she noticed why it is important to take pride in where you come from. She

Later on, when she turned 16 she married a Mexican-American dental technician. She then had 3 children named Martha,Victor, and Mario. Her children started school and had been placed in a program called "Yellow Birds" for slow learners. She was then upset because she felt that it was her fault that her kids where slow. Soon after that, she became fed up and knew she had to do something to find education. So she tried to find different ways to learn English such as, sitting in a nursing class at a hospital where she had volunteered at for years. But unfortunately she couldn't due to her not having a high school diploma. Have you ever heard someone say, “I should write a book?” Perhaps you’ve said it yourself. People want to write books for a lot of reasons and I believe everyone has a book in them. Perhaps they think writing a book will lead to becoming famous or they might make a pile of money. Some people may want to write to show peers from high school that they aren’t a big loser after all. I think the main reason most authors write is based upon their past experiences and things they have encountered throughout their lives and this is no different from children’s author Cylin Busby Ross.…

For my interview, I chose to have a very close family member tell part of her life story, For the purpose of this interview, we will call her Karla. She came to the United States with her parents when she was a little girl. She grew up in the middle of two cultures, exposed to two different ways of life. She always manages to be in a great mood and I can always count on her opinion on many subjects, with the certainty she always tries to approach every subject with a non-bias opinion. She grew up knowing the good and bad about being a bilingual child, raised with parents that did not speak Spanish. She is always telling us stories on “when she was growing up.” She managed to put herself through college with no family financial assistance.…

I began writing in that journal as if I had written for years, pouring my heart out and staining those pages with my hurt filled anguish and severely damaged perceptions of love. Staining those lines with lead and eraser marks began to lift off a burdensome mountain of oppression put upon me by my child hood, allowing me to be reborn anew, like a phoenix from the ash of death. I began to share more with my social workers and slowly began to feel again! To appreciate life in it’s most little of simplicities was something I could have never experienced without the power to write. And that is why I can relate to “Why I Write”, by Joan Didion. The first descriptive sentence says so much. In fact, she need not say more. Joan Didion…

I don't have much to say about writing for myself. Writing doesn't mean much to me. I am not a writer. I am an orator. However, writing does mean something to my wife. I love my wife. She loves to write. She spends hours a day writing. I watch words flow from her fingertips as she writes page after page. She doesn't let me read much of what she writes, but when she does, I can see the passion and the joy that she has for what she writes about. I wish that I could write with such a fire.…
