Past Tense
How do we use the Past Simple Tense?
We use the past simple tense to talk about an action or a situation - an event - in the past. The event can be short or long.
Here are some short events with the past simple tense: The car exploded at 9.30am yesterday.
She went to the door.
We did not hear the telephone.
Did you see that car? | past | present | future | | | | | The action is in the past.
Here are some long events with the past simple tense: I lived in Bangkok for 10 years.
The Jurassic period lasted about 62 million years.
We did not sing at the concert.
Did you watch TV last night? | past | present | future | | | | | The action is in the past.

Notice that it does not matter how long ago the event is: it can be a few minutes or seconds in the past, or millions of years in the past. Also it does not matter how long the event is. It can be a few milliseconds (car explosion) or millions of years (Jurassic period). We use the past simple tense when: * the event is in the past * the event is completely finished * we say (or understand) the time and/or place of the event

In general, if we say the time or place of the event, we must use the past simple tense; we cannot use the present perfect.
Here are some more examples: * I lived in that house when I was young. * He didn't like the movie. * What did you eat for dinner? * John drove to London on Monday. * Mary did not go to work yesterday. * Did you play tennis last week? * I was at work yesterday. * We were not late (for the train). * Were you angry?
Note that when we tell a story, we usually use the past simple tense. We may use the past continuous tense to "set the scene", but we almost always use the past simple tense for the action. Look at this example of the beginning of a story:
"The wind was howling around the hotel and the rain was pouring down. It was cold. The door opened and James Bond

The past is what creates the present, it is the reason why things happen now. Basically without the past there is absolutely no present. The past is what creates who we are and what we now are. Just like in The Great Gatsby all of the characters went through some phase in their lives that made them who they were at the end of the book.…

In John Updike’s “A & P” Sammy, the main character of the story encounters three young girls who come into his grocery store. They are dressed for a day at the beach, not shopping. “The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece. She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit, at the top of the backs of her legs.” (Updike) Sammy goes on to say the girls are barefoot and in describing another of the girls says the straps on her swimsuit are down. Their apparel gives them some unintended attention. Lengel, the A & P manager, confronts the three girls, reminding them they are not at the beach. The girls try to defend themselves stating the reason they are in the store is to pick up one item for one of the girls’ mothers. Lengel does not care and tells the girls it does not matter why they are in the store but they need to be decent when they came in to do any sort of shopping. Sammy does not like the way Lengel made a scene and embarrassed the girls. He feels he must follow his heart and stand up for the three girls by quitting his job. In my life, exploring the option of homeschooling my three children, I feel there could be unintended negative consequences as well. Weighing the pros and cons of the decision is a heavy task, but in the end I must do what is right for my family despite outside obstacles, just as Sammy had to do what he felt was right. Sadly, doing what is right for you often times is rejected by main stream society and can therefore bring uphill challenges that accompany your decision.…

The second difference the method used on conveying the story. In 'A man told me the story of his life', it doesn't mention much about the setting of the story such as the location setting or the time; the story gives you no detail information about the places or the time. For example, the story does not explain where or when Vincente existed. Setting…

The short story, which is written in present as well as past tense form takes place in Seymour's study. It is described as cosy room carpeted with a soft white woolen shag. The atmosphere in the room is very serious. It is obvious that it is a big thing for Seymour to tell his grandson an important story from his time during World War 2. Although our narrator has heard the story many times before, he falls into the role of the curious grandson ready to man up and listen to his grandfathers exciting yet very serious stories. As Seymour begins his story-telling, it quickly becomes obvious that the story is a very big thing to him, and that he while telling the story almost becomes an entirely different person; “Don't Smile,” he says. “Just because I'm smiling, don't assume that I couldn't kill you right now. Know that about a man”. This also stands out as he is calling his grandson 'Sailor' instead of his real name. Almost as if he is letting his grandson into his story and making him a part of it. During the story-telling Seymour gets drawn into his own story, almost as if he is living it out inside of his head, while still being able to conversate with his 'Sailor'. It is as if he is stuck in the past.…
