Part Time Job
As a young child growing up my parents always told me to study, study, and study! That my main priority should be to get a better education and I shouldn’t have to worry about money because that was their job as parents. Well this has stuck with me throughout my educational career so far. I personally have not had a job until this day. My parents would tell me that being a student was my job and that I should be good at it just like I would do if it was a paid job. Well I feel as if I would have had a job I wouldn’t of have continued my education like fellow classmates that I know. Obtaining a job at such an early life has its advantages such as being introduced into the work filed preparing an individual for the future. High School students are being exposed to how to behave professionally and manage their money and time wisely. Thomas Lu, who wrote the article, Should students work part-time during the school year? Claims that by students working at an early age they will be at an advantage from those who don’t. Stating that these particular students will be allowed to start learning about the working world. He mentions how the academic status and financial situation should be taken into consideration because otherwise it will just harm them instead of helping them. I think that is a very important fact. Nick Somoski, also states her counter opinion to the subject Should students work part-time during the school year? He unlike Mr. Lu believes that a job is no good for young teenagers in high school. He mentions how high school students should take advantage of the fact that their parents still have to support them financially. High school should be spend focusing on their studies and not taking away time that should be spend studying and preparing them from following their education and not wasting that time working. He brings up a great point when he mentions that the only reason why high school students who work part time has risen is because they have

Some of the research articles we found included people from both sides. The first article included places like McDonalds where you start out at the bottom and work your way up the food chain. Although, this happening is rare, you learn valuable skills like, time management, being honest and being dependable. The second article we read opposed the idea of high school students working. This author argued that high school students can only get jobs that do not require any skills or creativity and you should spend your time focusing on the important thing, school.…

I can still hear the echo of my mother’s voice when I told her I was leaving my job to go back to school full time. In her loving demeanor and ever so softly toned voice, she said, “If you would have focused on education instead of your social status back then, you would be a doctor by now.” I could not believe my ears! However, I knew exactly what my mother meant and sadly responded with, “you are right mother.” I was twenty seven, a mother of two, and about to sacrifice so much for higher education. This was not going to be easy but I was determine to do it for myself and my family. In the past, my parents stressed the importance of education and did all they could to support us through it. However, my priority as a teen was my appearance.…

There are hardly any jobs that begin later than school begins and By going through the same process for many years, it makes waking up early and going to work seem not as difficult as waking up and going to school. There’s a time in life when teens want to get a head jump into their adulthood. To show that they’re maturing, some teenagers start smoking, while others start dating to show their responsibility and commitments towards relationships, but most of them start working part- time in order to have money to do the things they wish to do. In fact, I got my first job at the age of 15 when I was a freshman in high school. The reason why I chose to work was because I wanted to save some money for college. Although I work to save money for school, many of my friends work to save money for new-fashioned clothing and shoes. As a result of working, my GPA dropped from a 3.83 to 3.55 during my senior year. Earning money to spend can be a good thing, but having a job does hurt a teenager in several ways. Therefore, students who are attending school shouldn’t work during the school year because working has a negative effect on the student’s school success as well as his/her future.…

With more money comes more responsibility. Having a job after school is a way to help teenagers transition into adults. They now have to make choices on where to spend their money.…

All of the positives about having a part-time job have one big caveat. Students cannot usually be employed more than 20 hours per week or their grades begin to suffer, they do less homework, and they are more likely to drop out (Gisler & Eberts, 2016). Your grades could suffer more if you were without a job than if you had a job during school. The busier you are, the more focused you become. Working really makes you more structured; you have a lot of things to do in a short amount of time, so it’s important to keep up with it all (Laskowski, 2009). So, if they get paid for grades and don’t get a job because you don’t have to, you won’t be structured as if you had a…

Amitai Etzioni wrote a short story called, “Working at McDonald’s.” As we know most parents want their kids to start working during high school in order to learn responsibility. Etzioni talks about how it is not educational for a teen to start working while in high school, because most teens will work part time at some fast food joint. He states, “But in fact, these jobs undermine school attendance and involvement, impart few skills that will be useful in later life, and simultaneously skew the values of teenagers- especially their ideas about the worth of a dollar.” He is highly against teens working, because many of them stop focusing on school and he has found results to where a lot of teens who work through high school have become high school dropouts. At the end of Etzioni’s essay he points out how teen employment is not educational as most parents think it is. His opinion is that it would better for you to put your child in a sport and let them be active that way, because a sport can also me educational.…

After reading this essay by Amitai Etzioni, I could see why he is promoting teenagers to pay more attention to their academics and education rather working at fast food restaurants like McDonalds. He provides many studies done to prove his thesis clearly. One of the few studies is a 1984 study by Ivan Charper and Bryan Shore Fraser which says that teenagers do not pay attention to what skills they develop because they only care about finishing their working hours and earning money. Another study by A. V. Harrell and P. W. Wirtz in 1980 which said “ among those students who worked at least 25 hours per week while in school, their unemployment rate four years later was half of that of seniors who did not work”( Axelrod and Cooper 281). Etzioni argued that many of the students who worked part time were end up unemployed or they were had a low skilled job. Etzioni provides appropriate support for his essay by using statistics data like “58 percent of seniors acknowledged that their jobs interferes with their school work” (Axelrod and Cooper 282). These studies do provide a strong argument but these studies do not show or tell about the circumstances that force certain teenagers to work at fast food restaurants.…

When a student becomes employed, they can save the money that they earned, which can benefit for their future education. To further explain, the interview “ Paying for College without Loans, Scholarships or Looting your Parents’ Retirement” by Steinburg, Jacques and Mr. Zac Bissonnette tells the reader how “ Saves $6 per hour of that throughout high school will have 24,960 in savings,”(Bissonette 13). This proves to show that just with saving a little bit of money, can help the student pay off college easily. Others may argue that working during high school can distract a student from their work, but the same article leads a different direction with that statement. For example, it states how “college student who were employed...higher average GPA (2.72) than those who werent working,” (Bissonette 13).The statistics clearly show that when a student works during school it motivates them try harder at school. Overall, working while being in high school allows the student to not be in such a high…

One of the most time consuming things about school is the homework. If a student is willing to come home from work and stay up till 3am trying to get their homework and projects done then they should be fine with a job. But most students like precious sleep. Work would limit a student on the amount of time they had to complete their homework. And if a student doesn’t do their homework then they’re grades will drop. Slipping grades is a big issue for athletic students. If a student has an ‘F’ they become ineligible to play sports. A job would cause a student to fail to complete their homework.…

Johan Cruijff once stated, “Every disadvantage has its advantage.” This famous quote leads to the issue of whether students should work or not work during high school, which has been a controversial hot topic in the Parent/Teacher Association. Working during high school may affect students’ school performance, yet working also provides invaluable working skills. According to the short article, “Part-Time Work Ethic: Should Teens Go For It?” by Dennis McLellan, “80% of high school students had held part-time jobs by the time they graduated” (270). Statistics show that the majority of the high school students held a position in a job during high school, and these students still graduated successfully.…

Department of Labor, 2000). Furthermore, even though most teens don’t have any financial responsibility of house, car payments and health insurance to worry about-because parents cover that, there are many potential benefits for them having a part-time job. Having a pay check will also help them learn money management skills, and with parents allowing them to go thru overspending with not a practical purchase, this too can help them think twice next time they want to overspend. It’s better to learn when young instead of in adulthood. It can also help them stay out of trouble with friends or avoid getting into any dangerous situations if they must go to work the next morning. Teaches them to invest a lot of their time in going to work and are less likely to spend their time frivolously or waste their money on trivial things. They will also use the reason of a job to keep themselves busy and stay away from teenage…

Ever wonder why the most mature and responsible teenagers have jobs but your playful teen, who won’t take the blame for anything does not or can’t keep one. Many high school students have jobs. Jobs teach responsibility and tend to help teenagers mature over time with this added responsibility. But when these teens work they get a pretty good lesson about ethics and etiquette so if they are willing to learn instead of quitting they will turn out better than when they first started. Many jobs tend to teach lots of responsibility because a lot of things can fall into someone’s job description. Working while in High school is great because it stops teens from messing up their lives by giving them less time to do it.…
