Each country has their own history and all of them proud of their histories. Through studying about events from the past, we can see clearly about what our ancestors did to build and protect our countries. History books today are flooded with pointless tasks for memorization, which is just an easy fix to get students a good grade on a test, without them actually retaining the information in the chapter. Not being properly educated on past events gives the future more opportunity for mistakes, considering they will not be able to compare past and present problems in hopes to not make the same mistakes again. It is easy for students to brush off this information because it is taught in such a matter of fact sort of way, not showing any passion, just information does not make a person interested in a subject. When a student can have actual feelings regarding an event, that is when it sticks. When they can really understand what is going on, through real stories and encounters, they have a more thorough understanding of the world and are better prepared to participate in…

Nevertheless, people shouldn’t rely on classroom lessons. History should be done on ones own to assure our patriotic country justice. Dull people nowadays dislike history, due to believing that it doesn't pertain to them today. A historical event from the past teaches us to learn from our mistakes and to benefit from those mistakes so in the future we can do the right thing other than what we did in the past. One example of a historical event we can learn from is “The Diary of Anne Frank” about the family and Anne herself to learn from what happened back in the past in the 1900s. In the story “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett teaches us to learn that they made this story for us to realize that it was wrong to put the Jews in concentration camps, why Anne Frank was so strong, and why the story of “Anne Frank” is sad because what happened to Anne and the people that were with her.…

There is a proverb in Belgium that states “Happy Nations have no history.” This proverb means that you must first have chaos and madness in order to thrive and be successful. Many people or even groups of people struggle through life and as time goes on hit many obstacles and hardships. In today’s society you must fail first and learn from your mistakes. Everyone needs history whether it's standing up for what they believe in, memorizing the greatness of others, or fighting for freedom to achieve happiness. However sometimes taking matters into your own hands can lead to disaster.…

Lessons of History was a passionate book and I enjoyed reading Will and Ariel Durant’s opinion and perspectives on things. I would say it opens your eyes and mind to what was out there before and what could possibly still be here in the world today. History. We all have heard or learned something about our history. But, what distinguishes us one from another? Nearly all of us have learned about the past. A large percentage of us even understand the hardships and accomplishments of the past. But, how many will actually use our history to help shape future? In fact, the Harvard Business School released a study that classified 3 percent of people as successful, 30 percent of people as somewhat successful, and the other two-thirds as simply watching life pass them by. We cannot be a complacent dreamer, only dreaming of the activities that went on throughout our rich history. Also, let us not be the basic believer, understanding our past but never allowing it to shape our future. An achiever is what we all should strive to be. The achiever understands the past and utilizes it to create a brighter future.…

History as a weapon is a pitfall that is very common and easy to become a culprit and a victim of. For students, they cannot control the curriculum that they are taught. Unfortunately, they have no way of identifying false information if they have little to no knowledge of the subject. For example, as a student I looked forward to Christopher Columbus Day because I enjoyed celebrating this phenomenal event in history. Each time I heard the story, it seemed even more incredible because the older I became, the more I was able to understand how remarkable his accomplishments were. However, it was not until ninth grade that my history teacher ruined everything I had once believed about Christopher Columbus. This moment was very difficult to understand as a student and an aspiring teacher. How could my teachers betray me for so many…

We can learn from the mistakes, trials and tribulations of former societies and draw knowledge from their experiences to aid us in solving problems we face in today’s world. By studying our past, we may come to understand how some problems developed, which in turn may lead to a core-solution to a problem we still face today. As many forget, the reason we, as a species, are fascinated by our own past goes far beyond mere problem-solution seeking, though it is a reason we keep returning to. We are also drawn to it; we thirst for knowledge, and while we may know far more about this planet and the world we live in than our ancestors did, many of the questions they asked remain unanswered.…
