JJ 1 J. J. . . . The Story of the Pea Island Life Savers In July of 2007, I explored the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the first time. I had driven down Highway 12 to a beach house for the summer vacation. The environment of the open sea touched by the narrow land gave me a feeling of wonderment as I observed the coastline and its beauty. During that first visit I noted that the ocean surf was strong and the sky constantly changing. On each visit to the Outer Banks, I challenged myself to learn something new of the Outer Banks long history. It was on my third visit to the Outer Banks when I discovered the story of a unique group of black men who were Life Savers. These black Life Savers worked for the government after the reconstruction period of the Civil War and defined…

Mentors should be experienced and have a clear mission, according to Parrott & Parrott (2005). Essential are: warmth, which brings a sense of relaxation and comfort without smothering; sincere genuineness in helping the couple versus being unfruitful; and empathy showing true interest. Several mistakes that beginners make in mentoring are discussed, including not setting boundaries, asking too many questions, and passing judgment. This section ends with the positive outcome of learning about yourself while you are helping others.…

Bobos is the term that author David Brooks uses to label the new rising upper class of today's society. Bobos are the creation of two merging social groups; the bourgeois and the bohemians. There has been a traditional clash between the bourgeois world of capitalism and the bohemian counterculture. "The bourgeoisie were the square, practical ones. They defended tradition and middle-class morality. They worked for corporations, lived in suburbs, and went to church. Meanwhile, the bohemians were the free spirits who flouted convention. They were the artists and the intellectuals – the hippies and the Beats." (p. 10). But these separate worlds have merged into one. This merging is what the book is all about, the new…

The foster care system in New York City is deeply flawed. Sixty-four percent of foster care children are impoverished in their adult lives, 50% of girls are pregnant within 12-18 months of aging out of the system, and 80% of all inmates on death row grew up in the foster care system. Foster care children should not have to fight against these statistics. The Felix Organization is providing solutions, through Camp Felix, Beyond Camp, the Felix Friendship Circle, and the Secret Santa Gift Exchange. Camp Felix, their largest program, is a four week long summer camp for children in foster care.…

This Program really hit home with me as I to spent time as a juvenile in a similar institution, definitely not as therapeutic but none the less certain aspects such as staff that are willing to talk and work through personal problems with. These kids in this video have been through a lot in their lives and it’s not one bit surprising that they have gone down the paths that they have. I think that it’s awesome that these kids are able to receive the rehabilitative help they need versus just being tossed in a cell and left to rot until their sentence is up. Seeing this type of program at a national level would be great and far more beneficial to juveniles than the traditional lock up facility. I believe that as great as it would be to see this…

These were not normal phone calls of a government that was conducting professional investigations as normal safety procedures for the sake of the country's security. It was a government that was out for blood, terrorising those people with vindictive spite and hatred. This city's main trait, tolerance, has long disappeared and the Jews are no longer welcome in it. In birds of Amber, The police's harassment of Nawal is similar to Acimen's family. "ان الاختبار الذي اجريناه لك كن باوامر من جهة امنية الغرض منه و ضعك علي حافة السكين" (عبد المجيد 453) Ibrahim Abdel Meguid's narrative parallels that of Andre Acimen. No-one was exempted from the harassment of the police. Everyone lived in terror of crimes they knew nothing about and unjust accusation. The country was in utter turmoil.…
