"To bodily go where no one has gone before" is what Gene Rodenberry thought human progress was all about. I have been watching Star Trek for almost 15 years now and the way Gene Rodenberry portrayed human progress has made me wish that I was immortal, just so I could see what is to come.…

The reason progress doesn’t occur is partly because of these two things, however, the reasoning can be taken one step further. The reason we have time as we know it and tradition is because we are human. Tradition encapsulates the “this is how we do it” mantra-this can be accounted for in the form of religion and other belief systems. Time is just a medium that people use to control their out of control lives and it is quite successful in doing so. Tradition, however, controls people more. Tradition says it is ok to tell white lies, mock homosexuals, and make sure the tree that we bring into our house which covers our presents is taken care of. Both of these literature pieces quantify humanity. Human nature fills the essence of these stories and time and tradition are just part of our human living system. Unfortunately, there are never any fulfilling answers to these issues, at least not in these stories. The people are always left stuck or confused, looking for answers. The answers aren’t found in tradition and time keeps us so anxious and preoccupied that we can’t even begin to look for truth. The first step in finding the truth is understanding who the people are in these stories as well as the authors-humans. The description of how the human race started is found in Genesis, which is where the truth…
An example of this is when kids can’t wait to grow up, but when they do they wish they were young again. They are so focused on being able to be independent and make their own decisions that they miss all the small memories of their childhood. When they grow up they wish they would’ve appreciated the experience more rather than focusing on being an adult. Another example of this is when people go on a vacation and they are so focused on getting to their destination that they don’t enjoy the road trip itself. The journey is just as important as the vacation itself. You can meet new people and learn new things on the way but only if you aren’t worried about getting to the end point. Lastly, if someone is always hurrying through their shift at a job, they are missing out on the experience. They could be meeting and interacting with new people but they are too fixed on completing the task at hand. It would make the job more satisfying and they could get more out of the task. Everybody should take time to soak in each experience in life, no matter how…
I struggled for several days thinking of an experience that would best answer the discussion question. The difficulty lies not so much in coming up with a situation, any situation; but a real-life experience that I could honestly say it was personal and not just a hypothetical story.…
When this happens we are empowered to make choices that are more informed and therefore more effective in helping us attain our goals. Our positions in society shaped most of what we do and when we understand how we are influenced we can adjust accordingly (Witt 2014:398). For example if I began to notice that my position in life as a student or at my job did not represent my values, goals, or norms that I want to follow I should adjust accordingly.…

In Alan Lightman's Progress; the writer believes that the general idea about advancement in technology being the measuring scale for society's progress is a logical fallacy; the two ideas mentioned in this paragraph state Lightman's self contradictory, yet relative and valid points. In the fourth paragraph Lightman states, "If progress is human happiness, has anyone shown that Twentieth- century people are happier than Nineteenth-century people?" Alan Lightman makes it clear that technological advancements are not a true indicator of society's progress. He hints that a better indicator would be "human happiness". I agree with the writer because happiness to me is the real measuring scale of progress.…
Life can throw you for a loop if you do not think about it and watch where it is taking you. Once I realized that I was too comfortable and dependent on my family, I started to analyze the problem and dissect each and every one around me. Who was providing what? Why were they handicapping me? How do I change this situation? Why am I blaming everyone but myself? Those were just a few of the questions I asked and also went looking for the answers the moment they came to thought. I will say it made me really depict my previous decisions and also future ones.…

Let’s start off with something simple. Progress is “advancement” or “improvement”. Change? Change is “substituting/replacing” or “transforming”. So while change may not result in progress, progress definitely requires change. Change is inevitable, but whether or not this change is in the right direction, moving forward, is what determines if there is progress. Hence, it isn’t change, but progress, that we should be aiming for.…
