PARADISE LOST OR AGONY FOUND?

John Milton, a very highly acclaimed poet of the Renaissance Period, is most noted for his works which carried emphasis on the Bible. The most heralded of these works, "Paradise Lost", revisits the very first story of the Bible. Milton attempts to justify his religion and his beliefs by going into further detail with the story and making it a lot more user friendly. With the use of themes, symbols, and motifs Milton creates a highly entertaining and explanatory story. Milton's first plan of business is to establish his theme. As one can clearly see from the first four words of this story, "Of man's first disobedience", this story's theme is the definition of disobedience of God and the result of that disobedience. There are two main instances of disobedience spoken about in this story. First, is seen as we revisit Satan's disobedience of God as Rafael tells it. The second and most obvious disobedient act is when Eve eats the forbidden fruit as shown in the line "…her rash hand in evil hour, Forth reaching to the fruit, she plucked, she eat." Not to be the only disobedient one, she goes and shares the fruit with her beloved Adam. Though these are both disobedient acts against God, there are two slight differences. Satan's act is punished for eternity, without a chance for redemption. There is not salvation and refuge for him, as he is doomed to spend his eternity in Hell. Mankind, through God's love and compassion, can seek repentance for their sins and still be accepted into heaven as an eternal reward. Milton also uses symbols in his story to help convey his message. A wreath is used throughout the world in ceremonies to demonstrate the circle of love and life. It is used here to show not only Adam's love for Eve but to also represent his loss of love for her. As he brings her the wreath, it symbolizes his continuing love for her and their eternal life in paradise. Once he sees that she has eaten the forbidden fruit, "From

In both speeches there is an internal rhyme and Eve’s speech alludes and paradoxes mainly phrases that Adam uses.     After a quick read of the passage from 3.540-587, one may assume that Satan is only concerned with viewing the beauty of the newly created earth. However, after a closer analysis and look into the language actually used in the passage, it is revealed that the sun is a more prominent figure in the passage than the earth. Therefore, Milton use of words and images throughout this passage convey the message of the stark contrast between the good the sun does for the earth and the earth’s future inhabitants, albeit being an inanimate object versus the evil Satan will do to the earth, even though he is a living, breathing creature.     lityThe construction of sexuality in Paradise Lost is an intriguing debate amongst scholars and critics to this day. One of the central issues surrounding the discussion of is in relation to pre-lapsarian and post lapsarian sexuality. Some critics such as C.S Lewis and St. Augustine argue against this notion and say that any argument supporting this is entirely hypothetical and to debate further on it would only create false imagery. However the general view supports the concept of there being some presentation of pre and post fall sexuality in the poem. As sexuality is a central aspect of human identity, by writing on pre and post lapsarian sexuality Milton is revealing how the human condition changed with respect to the fall of mankind.     In Milton's “Paradise Lost”, Adam and Eve might be considered tragic "heroes" in the sense that they knowingly doom themselves to be removed from Paradise, and are thus subjected to the harsh, new world, and yet persevere with the hope for a better future. What makes their act of sin almost tragic in a way as compared to Satan, is that Satan's act was meant out of spite and hate for the God. He seeks to destroy in one day that which took six days to create. Neither Adam nor Eve intended on for anything such as this to occur, but instead hoped to achieve a greater state of understanding and being. Satan realized that he would not be able to catch both of them, so he tempted Eve when she was alone. When Eve was asked by the serpent, she replies that the one restriction placed upon her and Adam was that "the fruit of this fair tree… ye shall not eat thereof, nor shall ye touch it lest ye die". When he explains to her that she would not actually 'die', but instead become such as God, it appealed to her desire to be equal to or more powerful than Adam, and so she fell. Although she, like Satan, fell because of her prideful aspirations and was condemned to be placed under her husband, she confesses her sin, and so she is able to, unlike Satan, move past her pride by admit her fault. Adam also ate of the forbidden fruit, knowing full well that was against the will of God, chose to do so anyhow due to his love for Eve thus causing him to fall as well. What makes Adam & Eve "heroic", from Milton's perspective, is their ability to admit their sin against God as being wrong, and their willingness to take responsibility for their actions.
