Some say we’re entering the post-PC era with people spending more time on their smartphones and tablets. But when it comes time for a job that requires multitasking, the PC is the way to go. Regardless if you’re using a Windows or a Mac, the PC is king and may always be.
When IBM and Apple first launched the consumer and business PCs in the mid 1970s and early 1980s, they brought in a new era. The PC allowed the consumer the ability to perform tasks without having a mainframe. Today, computers are just about everywhere performing tasks as simple as allowing me to write this essay to assisting in the operating room. Looking at the technological advancements of the computer over the years leaves you wondering where we will be in 20 or 30 years.
When the first personal computer was put out, companies saw the benefits of owning their own computers and how they could make their company become more productive. People during the late 70s and the following decades fell in love with the personal computer and used them for a variety of reasons, including office applications, home finance organization, storing data and many more options. The computer seemed to have made things a little easier.
In the 1990’s, the PC became mainstream. In 1990 the Hubble telescope was put in space and Microsoft was the first company to exceed $1 billion in sales. In 1994 Vice President Gore coined the term “Information Superhighway”. The way the computer impacted the 90’s was unimaginable. From blackberry to yahoo mail and facebook.com coming online, the computer was changing everyday life as we knew it thanks to the internet. During the 70's computers and computer use began to become known by everyone. This period was a time for development and improvement. The 70's was where many things we use today were introduced; although what we have today is far more improved. This time wasn't the beginning of all computers, but it was the beginning for many things, including the microprocessor, microcomputer, and the all so important, personal computer. In the early 70's we already had some types of computers which were developed in previous years. They consisted of a hard drive a type of keyboard and mostly a very small screen. Moving into the 70's we started developing more useful things like the floppy disk. This made it possible to store information onto a removable disk that could be transferred to other compatible computers. We also see the first microprocessor, which is a type of miniature electronic device that contains the arithmetic, logic, and control circuitry necessary to perform the functions. Before it took large machines to hold this memory where now it can be programmed on a small chip. In this period we also see the first IBM laser printer and also the first IBM ink jet printer. Bill Gates and Paul Allen also introduce Microsoft during this time. A development during the late 70's and maybe the most important development during this time was the personal computer, also known as the PC. The PC is a computer designed for use by only one person at a time. A personal computer is a type of microcomputer, or in other words, a small digital computer that uses only one microprocessor. The first PC consisted of a…

In 1981, IBM sold the first "PC", made from an 8088 processor with a clock speed of 4.77 MHz. It wasn’t the first computer ever made, but it was the first computer sold to ordinary people. We have moved on, we have made changes, and we have progressed to enhance computers. Computers have found their way into many aspects of our lives. In most cases computers make things easier for us. Computers have helped us so much, yet people seem to think we have come to be too dependent on them. Are computers really hurting our lifestyles? They have allowed us to learn, to communicate, and to organize making life just a little less stressful. Computers are great for the future of our world and will be greatly needed as we have many more things to discover in the near future and beyond. People may complain and argue that computers are just too much but they will see the truth when life needs more organization ,more communication and more education. Yes we could survive without computers, but the truth is… do we want to when we realize just what a computer can do for us. Computers are a central data base with thousands of resources instruments and tools that can help change the way we live. Yes we can use books and other resources to learn, but isn’t it nice to highlight the facts we need to know and take out the rest. Furthermore I will continue to discuss the reasons why computers are good and why we have not become overly dependent on them.…

The product I choose to discuss is desktop computers, also known as personal computers. A desktop computer is intended for regular individual use at a single location. Desktop computers have been around since 1977. “Derived from the development of large scale computers, which became the commonplace in the 1950s, the personal computer utilized advances in microelectronics to achieve immense reductions in the physical size and monetary cost of computing equipment.” (U.S. Census Data, n.d.) The target market that used desktop computers were the workplace, schools, libraries and in households by adults and children. According to the U. S. Census Data over 71% of children in school had some use of a computer and 40% of all working adults report that they use computers on their jobs. It also shows that children have more access to a computer at school versus home. The research shows that 30% of children ranging from ages 3-17 used a computer and that level of use has risen to 75% today. In 1984, 8% of 3-5 year olds used a computer and today that percentage have risen to 38%. It also showed that white children were about twice as likely as blacks and Hispanics to use a computer. The level of computer usage by adults has also risen over the past years. Adults between the ages of 25-44 usage rates are high but children and teenagers are more involved with technology. Older aged adult’s ranging from 65 and up computer usage percentage levels have dropped drastically because only 10% of them reported computer usage. So there is a significant difference from when computers first started until now between the usage of adults and the usage of children with computers.…
