The Deadly AIDS Kills in Haiti
(All Adults)

Haiti has a generalized HIV/AIDS epidemic. It has the largest epidemic in the Caribbean, where about three-quarters of HIV-positive people live in Haiti or the Dominican Republic. Some people believe that AIDS and HIV are a death sentence. Some believe that it’s best not to know, and some find out and never respond. AIDS and HIV is in fact not the same thing even though both can cause death. HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. And AIDS is a disease in which the body 's immune system breaks down and is unable to fight off certain infections, known as "opportunistic infections," and other illnesses that take advantage of a weakened immune system(1). This essay will show the devastating effects of Haiti. AIDS has destroyed the tourism business, stigmatized the prostitution industry and given the country of Haiti a bad name. While in Haiti, there are low-paid workers building and staffing new luxury hotels, attempting to draw tourist in for a visit to this preindustrial Caribbean land. It all sounds good until the American health authorities linked Haiti and the so-far incurable disorder known as acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, Haiti’s tourist industry has collapsed. The people and health advisors are giving Haiti a bad name. Their saying that the largest group of AIDS victims consisted of male homosexuals and the second largest group of victims consisted of Haitians. In the story A Mask on the Face of Death, it stated that “the lucrative tourism on which so much of the country’s economy was crippled. Alone with tourism went much of the foreign business investment” (Selzer, 1988, p. 450). The people began to think twice about coming to tour Haiti knowing that Haiti was indicted as the source of AIDS in the entire western hemisphere, no one wanted to risk getting the disease.

In the book Aids and Accusations: Haiti and Geography of Blame, author Paul Farmer discussed the rise of AIDS in Haiti and the various accusations as to why it was occurring there. In addition to this, he also shows how racism became a factor due to the theories of the American media and the Center for Disease Control. Inthe introduction he points out that when the virus became more recognized in Haiti and the United States, “Haitian researchers claimed that North American physicians and scientists had erroneously painted Haiti as a source of the worldwide AIDS pandemic”(Farmer 5). This was believed to be due to tourism that occurred there and people having relationships with Haitian people. Soon,“the Haitian scholars asserted that such a hypothesis…

These sage words from “The Trashmen” hint at the fragility of the bird species, as well as emphasizing the necessity of birds in not just our physical lives, but our pop culture. In this excerpt from the book Silent Spring, Rachel Carson racks up her score in the using rhetorical devices game in an attempt to convey her heartfelt message of the bird holocaust of 1959, where the farmers (or basically bird Hitlers), sprayed gas and poison all over the innocent woodland creatures.…

Writer, Toni Case Bambara, in his short story, “The Lesson” explains and refers the norm in which Bambara accredits to a group of kids who have been exposed to a number of social, economic, and political issues. Sylvia and the rest of the group of kids are not aware of the significant but negative impact that these factors will have on their lives if they do not realize what kind of system they are living and depending upon. Based on some bad ramifications on the personal and social department regarding kids in their societies, all these factors can be effective. Being set aside, the main purpose in the short story is not to take advantage of the opportunities given, but to understand and be grateful for what they have, but also to be determined to thrive for more giving them ambition.…

Haiti had minimal defense against this epidemic due to being one of the poorest nations with limited healthcare. Haiti has the highest adult HIV occurrence and the rate is 2.2% twice the level of the Dominican Republic. The rate of HIV progression was twice as high due to problems such as poor nutrition, high prevalence of community-acquired infections, and high rates of active TB. There was an increase in sexual violence against women and gang rape. HIV spread rapidly in Haiti with women as the epidemic started. “Since 1985, heterosexual intercourse has been the dominant mode of transmission, as the blood supply was protected early in the epidemic, and intravenous drug use in Haiti is rare, and has never been a significant risk factor for HIV/AIDS. As the epidemic became generalized, an increasing proportion of cases have been female” (Koenig, et al., 2010). Elevated HIV rates were reported for young women compared to those from 13-24 years of age (Malow, Rosenberg, Lichtenstein, & Dévieux, 2010). There is an estimated HIV prevalence among adults from 15-49 and 7,400 estimated AIDS related deaths from adults fifteen and up. In 2015, there were an estimated 68,849 adults living with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment (Center of Disease Control and Prevention,…

The culture, poverty, and HIV representation in Haiti is very devastating and HIV is the main cause in Haiti based on the article titled, “Culture, Poverty, and HIV Transmission, The Case of Rural Haiti” because it is a sexual transmitted infection that creates a deadly plague among people in Haiti. Factors such as culture, politic and economic factors have an impact in particularly addressing HIV transmission in rural Haiti; however, to understand this urban epidemic. Farmer proposes that we must move beyond risk groups and focus on the interplay of human agency and the low assess of medical services that can be a draw-back in the Haiti public health system.…
